Report: 19-12-2015 – Mens 4th’s (5) vs. (2) Chapeltown 4th’s

December 19, 2015 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers 4s finished their 2015 with a home game against Chapeltown who have provided a few tasty clashes over the years so it was not a game to be missed.

Slaz started brightly with many attacking opportunities created through Steve Johnson and eventually they scored with a short corner from Harry Gunning. However Slaz went into the break undeservedly behind as Chapeltown scored two against the run of play. After half-time the home team went straight into the 2nd half with intent to score.

The midfield of Sam Haigh, Dan Tiffany and Andy Fisher were dominating the play and created bags of chances for Josh Dunstan and Chris Gascgoine upfront. This was reflected in the final scoreline as Slaz ran riot with 4 goals in the second half to come out winners in the final match of the year. Man of the match went to Harry Gunning for contributing 2 goals.

Slaz start again in 2016 on 16th December against Brigg at home.

Report: 21-11-2015 – Ladies 3rd’s (1) vs. (0) Chapeltown 2nd’s

November 21, 2015 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers began their home fixture with enthusiasm; highlighting their determination to put an end to their recent run of bad form. Both teams went out hard, putting pressure on the others defence, making sure it was an exciting end to end battle. Slazengers were hungry for an early goal but despite dangerous efforts by player of the match Caro Scofield and forward Louise Beever, neither could break the deadlock and the game remained goaless at half time.

In the second half Slazengers maintained their determination and retained possession well. Further driving runs were made by Carol Scofield from which she was eventually rewarded when she impressively slotted the ball home from a narrow angle, leading to the only goal of the game. The team were extremely proud of their performance and the well deserved 3 points.

Slazengers will travel to Brigg next week where they will hope to continue their positive streak.

Report: 17-10-2015 – Ladies 1st’s (5) vs. (1) Chapeltown 1st’s

October 17, 2015 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers Ladies 1’s dominated this Saturday playing a strong Chapeltown team on home soil. From the off Slazengers came out fighting, and a great network of passes from Helen Hough and Sarah Sykes led to a well placed goal from Jessica Rudge. Chapeltown couldn’t respond, and Ellie Page scored the second goal after dribbling around the keeper in superb style.

Finishing half time at 2-0, Slazengers were keen to keep the lead. And after a slow start to the second half, a short corner lead to Jessica Rudges 2nd goals of the match, through the keepers legs. Sarah Cooper followed with a solid strike from the top of the ‘D’ into the bottom corner.

Chapeltown responded with a goal but Slazengers wouldn’t rest, and in the last 5 minutes Ailish Hendry dribbled it up the pitch with a well timed pass to Ellie Page who finished it to earn her second goal. With a 5-1 victory Slazengers go into next weeks match with high spirits.

Report: 17-10-2015 – Ladies 4th’s (0) vs. (4) Chapeltown 3rd’s

October 17, 2015 by Slazenger HC

With a limited squad of only 10 players, the ladies 4’s confronted a youthful Chapeltown 3rd’s. Unfortunately, the team were run out 4-0, however the scoreline does not tell the whole story.

The team fought well, with large stretches of play, however they were unable to convert the possession into goals. Of note, was some excellent play from Maisie Fallas and Lideya Booth who were both awarded player of the match.

Slaz travel to Leeds University looking to get some goals on the board!

Report: 03-10-2015 – Mens 2nd’s (7) vs. (1) Chapeltown 2nd’s

October 3, 2015 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers Men’s 2nd team got over the disappointment of the previous week with an excellent 7-1 victory at home to Chapeltown 2’s on Saturday. Straight from the off, Slazengers laid a marker down not giving Chapeltown any time to settle and pressing at every opportunity. The breakthrough came when a short corner routine ended with Ian Hedges opening the scoring. The lead was soon doubled when excellent work down the right wing by James Walker resulted in Hedges getting his second with an easy finish at the back post. Captain Ben Graham soon got on the scoresheet finishing another short corner routine and just before half time grabbed his 2nd and Slazengers 4th wrong footing the keeper with a subtle finish.

Chapeltown had harsh words at halftime and started the 2nd half brightly getting their consolation goal only for Slazengers to score 2 more almost immediately. James Walker got on the score sheet with a good finish and after Ste Roberts robbed the Chapeltown defence only to see his shot come back off the post, Hedges was on hand to knock into the empty net and complete his hat trick. Jake Barras completed the scoring picking the ball up outside the Chapeltown ‘D’, driving round a couple of defenders and finding a neat finish whilst under significant physical pressure from the covering defenders.

Ian Hedges picked up the man of the match award for Slazengers who travel to local rivals Wakefield on Saturday.

Report: 14-03-2015 – Mens 4th’s (1) vs. (1) Chapeltown 3rd’s

March 14, 2015 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers travelled to Chapeltown in the morning for a crucial match in their promotion chase. Chapeltown were in 3rd place before the game and 5 points behind Slaz with a game extra to play.

In the early exchanges Slazengers were second best as Chapeltown put pressure on the Slaz back four. Then after 15 minutes Chapeltown scored after a mix up between goalkeeper and full back which led to a tap in for the home team forward. From them on Slazengers started to grow into the game and dominated for the rest of the half but couldn’t find the back of the goal.

After the half time break Slaz continued to keep the ball in the Chapeltown half but couldn’t find the goal until with 15 minutes left Dan Tiffany put the ball in the roof of the goal from a scramble at a short corner. This was the only major event in the second half apart from with 2 minutes left when a mix up resulted in a Chapeltown red card for hitting a Slazenger player with a stick and a Slaz yellow for retaliation. These cards didn’t have an effect on the end result which concluded in an important 1-1 draw which leaves the 4s still in 2nd but promotion isn’t in our hands after Rotherham won 3-0.

An overall brave performance by the 4th team but unfortunately the deserved result wasn’t acquired. Next week they play a friendly against Doncaster back at Slaz pushback at 3, many supporters expected.

Report: 24-01-2015 – Ladies 3rd’s (1) vs. (0) Chapeltown 2nd’s

January 24, 2015 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers ladies 3s continued with their strong start to the new year with a 1 – 0 home victory over Chapeltown 2s. Despite losing by the same goal margin earlier in the year Slazenger’s looked the stronger of the two sides. They scored the only goal of the game with a quick response after a Chapeltown attack down the middle of the pitch.

The resulting counter attack consisted of a succession of short passes leading to the ball being on the stick of Lilly Miles who dribbled round the Chapeltown defence only to be initially denied by the Chapeltown keeper, Miles however took advantage of the rebound with a clean strike to take a 1-0 scoreline into half time.

The second half continued in the same manner with the Slazengers mid field of Emily Entwisle, Linda Stacey and player of the match Miles working tirelessly however Slazengers could not find the finishing touch and the scoreline remained the same at the final whistle with the Horbury side deserving the full three points.

Report: 10-01-2015 – Mens 2nd’s (7) vs. (0) Chapeltown 2nd’s

January 10, 2015 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers mens 2’nd team suffered no ill effects following the Christmas break with their first game back resulting in a resounding 7-0 victory over Chapeltown mens 2’s. The first 10 minutes or so were quite even with Chapeltown going close on a couple of occasions but once Simon Randall had opened the scoring for Slazengers, things were pretty much one way traffic.

Captain Ben Graham made it 2 after good work from Ste Roberts for Slazengers to lead 2-0 at the break. Chapeltown started the 2nd half determined to get back into it and again for 10 minutes the game was even but following Slazengers 3rd through Brett Cunningham, Chapeltown heads went down and Slazengers ran in 4 more. Both Simon Randall and Brett Cunningham grabbed their 2nd goals with a couple of excellent finishes with Byron Dean and Simon Chamberlain also getting on the scoresheet.

Dan Atkinson was excellent down the right flank all game picking up a number of assists and deservedly took the man of the match award. Slazengers will look to build on this result away at Huddersfield on Saturday.

Report: 04-10-2014 – Mens 2nd’s (2) vs. (2) Chapeltown 2nd’s

October 4, 2014 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers mens 2nd team travelled to Chapeltown 2’s in confident mood following their first win of the season the previous week but in the end, had to settle for a 2-2 draw. From the off, Slazengers had the upper hand and played some good attacking hockey particularly down the flanks creating a number of chances. The Chapeltown keeper was in excellent form and shut down a number of Slazenger attacks but couldn’t keep out Ben Grahams drive from the top of the ‘d’ after good work from Matt Stacey and Jack Mumford. Slazengers continued to play good hockey but Chapeltown soon began to create chances of their own and drew level with a tap in on the back post after a good passing move.

The second half was much the same; Slazengers attacking well but struggling to find the net with Chapeltown attacking on the break. It was Chapeltown who took the lead however following a quick break. Slazengers didn’t let their heads drop and with Tom Pitchforth and Eddie Richardson working hard in the middle, won a short corner with 5 minutes to go. This was duly converted when a loose ball fell to Jack Mumford to drill home. Both teams pushed for a winner but couldn’t find one and had to settle for the draw.

Matt Stacey took the man of the match award for Slazengers who will look to build on their unbeaten run when they entertain York University on Saturday.

Report: 20-09-2014 – Ladies 3rd’s (0) vs. (1) Chapeltown 2nd’s

September 20, 2014 by Slazenger HC

All started well with Slazengers determined to win their first league match of the season despite many new young faces in the side.

Slazengers dominated the game but failed to capitalise on several good chances and numerous short corners; Slazengers were just unable to find the back of the net.

Despite solid performances in defence from Emily Chason, Mandy Lacey and Sarah Ritchey the Slazengers team were caught on the break and Chappletown got a lucky goal in the second half.

An disappointing loss for the new look Slaz 3’s however the early signs were positive and the team shows real potential.

Player of the match was debut goalkeeper Beth Prince who made some impressive saves.
