Dan Perry and Edward Richardson put the defence under constant pressure and Richard Tuddenham thundered 4 goals past the keeper.

Report: 19-10-2013 – Mens 1st’s (1) vs. (4) Normanby Park 1st’s

October 19, 2013 by Slazenger HC

Slaz began with good ball movement around the pitch pitch but the tempo was not high enough to cause Normanby a problem.  Similarly Normanby didn’t look strong on the ball but moved forward fast. Normanby took the lead of a far post deflection fire in the D.

Slaz looked strong up front and caused a lot of pressure but failed to create a lot of chances.  Slaz got cut up before shooting and got a flick that Simon Chamberlain converted.  Slaz continued to look slow and didn’t link well, Normanby’s speed continued to influence and the final score was 4-1.

Report: 09-02-2013 – Mens 1st’s (4) vs. (2) Normanby Park 1st’s

March 5, 2013 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers 1st have not beaten Normanby Park in many years. Today however Slazenger were on the back of not losing a game this year.

Both teams were off to a fast pace and tried to tire the other side out by moving the ball round the back. Both sides had strong midfields that looked like they could turn the game. But it was the slaz forwards that had the edge to them and popped a goal in that bounced up and over sticks from centre back Will Buckley to the right winger Dan Perry who slotted it past the keeper.

Slaz got a second goal from Jack Mumford.. Normanby came Back at Slaz and got a good breakaway goal before the end of the first half.

Half time was a talk about who wants it more for the next 35 minutes. Again Normanby Park came out hard and pressured the slaz defense creating good chances to beat the keeper, but James Cowden made some great saves in the corners.
Slaz got a third goal from Isaac fisher with a lovely chip over the diving keeper. Normanby got another to keep the pressure on, but Paul Wiper claimed one from a short corner with a dipping flick from top of Semi Circle.

Slaz were again thrilled with a great team performance. Man of the match went to keeper James Cowden for keeping slaz in the game at key times.

But slaz knew they were well in the game still getting a hold of their possession and distributing the ball well. Slaz dominated the rest of the first half but struggled to break the Normanby goal line.

Slaz were able to pull a goal back thanks to striker Richard Tuddenham. The second half slaz pressured on but were tiring and Normanby Park. Were able to break away and increase the lead to 3-1. Man of the match Simon Chamberlain kept a level head and gelled slaz to claim back another goal for Richard Tuddenham’s second goal.

Normanby Park kept the pressure up and got 2 break away goals in the later stages to wrap up the match. Adam Drake, Paul Wiper and Jonny White all had good games and battle hard against a physical opposition.

Report: 14-04-2012 – Mens 3rd’s (6) vs. (1) Normanby Park 2nd’s – PROMOTION!

April 14, 2012 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger 3rd’s travelled to Normanby Park on Saturday, knowing only a win would see them secure promotion. After a jittery start, a 6-1 victory put it beyond doubt.

Slaz took the push back, starting brightly, though with some early nerves. However this was easily overcome after good link-up play from John Sykes and Andrew Birkett forced a mix up in the circle, allowing Birkett to slot an opening goal home. However, as in recent weeks, Slaz proceeded to make life difficult for themselves, by struggling to do even the simple things well. Normanby Park punished them for the mistakes, taking the initiative, and grabbing a scrappy equaliser. The usual strong Slaz defence struggled to clear their lines and keeper Ralph Toon couldnt stop the simple tap in which resulted, during an otherwise faultless performance.

Slaz continued to work, and the more effective passing game began to make gains. The horbury side attacked several times, cutting deep into the home teams half. Attacks from Ste Roberts, Ian Hedges and Matthew Stacey maintained pressure and it was Stacey who grabbed a vital equaliser before half time.

The game was closely contested for in the minutes before the half ended and Slaz were happy to hear the half time whistle.

In the second half, Slaz regrouped and reapplied the pressure. With only a goal in it, there was always a threat Normanby Park would equalise. John Sykes had been threatening throughout the first half, with several shots on goal. This half however, he managed to grab the goal; a powerful strike was caught by an unfortunate defender’s stick, with the keeper unable to save.

With some breathing room, Slaz really pilled on the pressure. Slaz continued to defend as a unit, with strong performances from their back line: Paul Johnson, Mark Kitchen, John Toon, and Alan Perry. This allowed the midfield to hit the opposition on the break, causing real problems in the Normanby Park goalmouth and winning several penalty corners in quick succession. It was from one of these that Paul Johnson scored Slazenger’s fourth; the ball whipped out from Birkett, and slammed in from the top of the circle.

A fifth goal completed Sykes’ brace, with a great individual effort. Receiving the ball on the edge of the goalmouth, made space for himself and struck the ball fiercely into the corner. This was quickly followed by Matthew Stacey’s second of the game, with a tap in from the right post.

Final score Slazenger 6 – Normanby Park 1 which ensures Slazenger 3’s will be promoted as runners-up having won their last 5 games of the season.

Report: 28-01-2012 – Mens 1st’s (0) vs. (1) Normanby Park 1st’s

January 31, 2012 by Slazenger HC

Slaz set off guns blazing to get a win after losing to Normanby Park in the first half of the season, however came away with the first loss of the new year.

Slaz midfielders ran the game which meant Slaz were constantly in the opposition half, but the Normanby side aren’t top of the league for no reason, they defended hard and kept pressure on the Slaz forwards.
However Slaz created chances throughout the first half and were able to put a lot of pressure on the keeper, forcing him to pull off some good saves.

Man of the match Jack Kitchen had another excellent game at right half and produced exceptional tackling and passing. Both Ben Graham and Steve Roberts had great performances and played out of their usual positions for large amounts of the game.

Normanby had a couple of good breaks to create some chances and scored a very good goal to leave Slaz continuing to fight for the game (a reverse tomahawk from the edge of the “D”). Slaz pressed until the last minute, but were still unable to put the ball in the back of the goal.

Slaz still sit in second place as they travel away to Chapeltown next week.

Report: 29-10-2011 – Mens 1st’s (2) vs. (3) Normanby Park 1st’s

October 29, 2011 by Slazenger HC

Slaz started off with some good work rate but Normanby Park pilled on the pressure and pinned Slaz in their own half.

Slaz failed to compose and Normanby Park fired one in. The Horbury side worked hard but failed to play good hockey. On occasions slaz put some good passing into to break Normanby parks D.

Richard Tuddenham looked dangerous when he fired balls at the keeper and capitalised evening up the score. Slaz defended well but were under too much pressure from a well drilled side, resulting in another going past man of the match James Walker.

Normanby Park scored again in the second half. Slaz kept going and worked some good passes together to make it 3-2 with 5 minutes left, and then camped in Normanby’s half and got 2 short corners. But it was too little to late.

Next week slaz travel to play Ramgarhia where they will play out of their socks and retain their top spot on the table.

Report: 01-10-2011 – Mens 3rd’s (3) vs (3) Normanby Park 2nd’s

October 5, 2011 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger 3rds started their league campaign on Saturday against Normanby Park and in swealtering conditions were unfortunate to only come away with a draw.

The game started quickly, with both teams eager to take control early on. However, it was Slazenger who put the pressure on in the early minutes of the game. Wingers Alex Calderley and Robin Brearton provided the width, making cutting runs, and chanelling the ball across the pitch.

Several chances went close, with strikers captain Paul Corney and Tom Whitaker making the keeper work in the heat. However, they were unable to find the net. Heading towards the end of the first half, Normanby Park broke away, and defeated keeper Giles Field putting them 1-0 up against the run of play.

In the second half, Slazenger composed themself and continued to build on the fluid game thy had been playing in the first half. The pressure paid off, with centre midfielder Andy Fisher breaking the deadlock with a powerful strike past the keeper.

This was followed up in quick succession, as a cross from Ian Hedges picked out Paul Corney, who burried it in the back of the net.

The third came from a fluid move worked from Slaz’s half. Centre back Paul Johnson fired the ball up the field, finding Calderley, who’s cross set up Brearton to put Slaz 3-1 up.

As the game came to a close, slaz conceeded 2 in quick succession, the second being controversial enough to put a dampner on what had been a great first outing for Slazenger’s third string.

Slaz thirds travel to meet Harrogate 6th’s at 10:30am in their first cup game of the year.

Report: 29-01-2011 – Mens 3rd’s (2) vs (1) Normanby Park 2nd’s

January 29, 2011 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger Mens 3rd’s took to the field Saturday, successfully securing the 3rd win of the day for Slazenger Hockey Club.

It was a closely contested game, which started at a brisk pace. Slaz started confidently, but found a tough opposition blocking their way through. After the first few minutes, the team settled into the game, and started to operate better together, beginning to find gaps in the opposition’s defence. Nornamby Park were strong on their attack, and several times went close, breaking through the midfield, and passing swiftly outwit the defence. A combined effort from Paul Johnson and Nick Slack denied a shot on goal, keeping Slaz from conceding early.

Unfortunately, even with the great defending it was Normamby Park who took the lead, seamlessly slotting the ball past the keeper. Slaz redoubled their efforts, and within minutes they went close again, with a great series of passes from Issac Fisher and James Bennett carving through the oppositions midfield. With this level of pressure, it wasnt long until Slaz equalised, with winger Alan Perry slotting the ball into the bottom right corner, out of the reach of the keeper.

The second half started with much urgency on Slazenger’s part. They had had the momentum going into half time and wanted to maintain the initiative. A fast break from Jack Mumford and Ste Roberts caught Normanby Park offguard, carving up the midfield. Ste took the ball in and passed it across the ‘D’ to Jack; allowing him to fire the ball home.

Slaz maintained the pressure, and was unfortunate not to secure further goals from several opportunities. At the other end, it was another impressive appearance from Giles “Fodder” Fields. In only his fourth game he wowed the crowd with several spectacular saves, including headbutting the ball clear on one occasion. When the final whistle blew, Slaz retained the lead and secured the 3 points.

Next week Slaz play Hull away.

Report: 06-10-2007 – Mens 2nd’s (6) vs. (1) Normanby Park

October 7, 2007 by Slazenger HC

Ben Graham and Tim Carr bagged a hat-trick apiece as Slazenger made it two wins in two weeks with a convincing 6-1 win at Normanby Park.

The visitors got off to a slow start and sloppy defending allowed Park to take the lead but Tim Carr’s fifth goal in two games put Slazenger on level terms at the break.

The Horbury side were much improved in the second half and Ben Graham gave them the lead before Carr scored his second of the match.

Slazenger continued to push forward and Graham struck twice to complete his hat-trick. Carr completed the scoring late on with his third.

Slazenger will be looking to continue their winning ways when they entertain Leeds on Saturday.
