L.A.Carnegie

Report: 22-09-2012 – Mens 3rd’s (3) vs (1) L.A.Carnegie 5th’s

September 26, 2012 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger Men’s 3rd team took to the field for their first competitive fixture since their promotion last season to Division 6, with a dominant display away at Leeds Adel Carnegie 6th’s. While they came away with a commendable 3-0 result, without the hard work of the opposition keeper, it could have been 10.

With captain Andy Fisher out with a broken hand, the team had to begin the season without his help. However, this did not slow them down, as they began in the same way they had finished last season, with flowing hockey which immediately put the opposition under pressure. Just after the 4 minute mark, Luke Gueli had scored the opener, setting the standard for the rest of the game.

Slazenger reset after the goal and continued to press. A strong back line of Tony Walker, Paul Johnson, Alex Calderley and Mark Kitchen held firm, and keeper Ralph Toon had almost nothing to do all game.

Some solid running from midfield dynamo Ste Roberts, along with Jack Mumford and striker Steve Johnson led to the second goal; a rapid series of 4 passes splitting the defence, leaving Andy Birkett to slot the ball home.

After the break, the chances continued to come thick and fast. Within minutes, Alex Calderly’s shot had narrowly missed the mark, and excellent efforts from newcomer Dan levitt and Luke Gueli kept Carnegie under pressure. However, some solid goalkeeping from the home goalkeeper kept the scoreline at 2-0. L.A.Carnegie had several efforts against Slaz, but were unable to overcome some tenacious defence and solid counter-attacking.

In the latter part of the second half, it was Rowan Tejura, who single handedly rounded the keeper, to slot the ball home, making it 3-0

The scoreline is a promising start to what looks to be a promising campaign in division 6. Slaz travel to Brigg 4’s next week.

Report: 24-03-2012 – Mens 1st’s (3) vs. (3) L.A.Carnegie 3rd’s

April 2, 2012 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger mens 1st’s went into their final game of the season knowing that a win would secure their promotion ambitions, making it unlikely to be stopped by the chasing teams. Unfortunately, they could only take a tough 3-3 draw.

A depleted slaz team (including a missing Captain Will Buckley) took to the field, though struggled to make the impact they desired. The game was closely matched, with Slaz struggling to get their head in the game. Their usual fast attacking style was stifled by some poor passing and communication. This did more to help the visitors, who capitalised and scored the first goal. This was closely followed by a second, putting them ahead after 20 minutes.

Slaz fought back, with several attacks on goal only to be denied by the keeper and some strong defensive work. However, Slaz equalised before the break keeping them in the fight; a short corner effort from Richard Tudddenham

The second half proved a better performance from Slaz. they maintained their pressure and for times, their old performance appeared. The home team struck back to equalise. However, the game was far from over, with the visitors scoring a third midway through the second half. Slaz fought back again, and a well worked routine was finished off by Isaac Fisher, making it 3-3.

With minutes remaining, Slaz were given a penalty flick. Mark Swindon stepped up to take it, but put it agonisingly wide of the net.

The game ended 3-3, meaning Slaz will have to wait on other results to see whether they have achieved promotion.

Report: 04-12-2011 – Girls U16’s Dominate Last Games of 2011

December 6, 2011 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers U16 girls had the perfect end to the last tournament of 2011. The weather certainly was the first challenge with the cold temperatures, horizontal rain & hail & a very blustery wind to boot.

Slazenger (3) vs. (0) L.A. Carnegie
The first game was against Leeds Adel Carnegie, the girls stayed focused despite the testing conditions & came away with a well deserved win. First on the score sheet was Nayeesha Tejura, closely followed by Georgia Housten . Leeds made some good breaks which were picked up by our steadfast defensive duo of Evie Johnson & Millie Crowther. Slazengers kept the pressure on the Leeds defence & were able to pick up another goal from a great strike from Katie Browne to make the final score a 3-0 win to Slazengers.

Slazenger (2) vs. (0) Rotherham
The girls were straight on to face a very strong Rotherham, the sides were quite evenly matched with the play being end to end. Again a well positioned Georgia Housten scored a great goal on the back post, Rotherham were quick on the counter attack but were denied by goalkeeper, Chloe Bates. Slazengers kept applying the pressure and earned themselves another goal from Nayeesha Tejura. Final score was a 2-0 win to Slazengers.

Slazenger (5) vs. (0) Selby/Pocklington
The girls had a one match break & then were back on the pitch ready to face their next opponents, Huddersfield Dragons. The girls dominated from the start, made great use of the whole pitch . Sophie Williams distributed the ball perfectly to the mid field duo of Rebecca Jessop & Jess Holland. Their hard work payed off when Georgia Housten found herself on the score sheet yet again, this proved to be the first of a hatrick of goals for player of the tournament Georgia Housten. Also finding the back of the net was Hannah Field & Jess Holland. A 5-0 win was a great result keeping confidence high for the following game against Selby/Pocklington.

A superb defensive display by Selby/Pocklington denied numerous Slazenger attacks, strikes on goal from Daisy Burrows & Elle Spruce all saved off of the line . Despite their best efforts, Selby/Pocklington were unable to deny all efforts & Slazengers scored two great goals, both great strikes from Rebecca Jessop. Final score a 2-0 win.

Slazenger (1) vs. (0) Halifax
Despite the hail & rain, the girls persevered into thei final game against the strong home side of Halifax. Halifax put up stiff opposition but the attacking play from Slazengers was relentless. Daisy Burrows playing outstanding as centre forward,Slazengers had many attacks on goal but again, a ball played around the goal to the in form Georgia Housten saw Slazengers break the deadlock . This proved to be the only goal of the match but another win to Slazengers saw a perfect end to the day. A great all round team display resulted in clean sheets across the board & five well deserved wins.

Report: 26-11-2011 – Mens 2nd’s (4) vs. (0) L.A.Carnegie 5th’s

November 26, 2011 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger Men’s 2nd Team travelled to Leeds Adel Carnegie and won 4-0. Although the final score looked impressive the match started out quite even and slaz didn’t score until the start of the second half. The first half did see slaz with most of the possession and creating most of the chances but slaz keeper Giles field did have make a couple of saves to keep the scores level, although the Adel keeper did have to make a lot more to keep his side level.

After the break slaz capitalised on Adel’s slow start and had soon scored their first goal. Matt green passed the ball to Ben Graham who ran into the ‘D’ and drew out the keeper and passed the ball across to Man of the Match Matt Middleton to knock the ball home. Slaz’s second came soon after with Matt Middleton passing the ball to Byron Dean at the top of the ‘D’ who passed back to Matt Middleton, who had followed his pass, who chipped the ball over the diving keeper.

With Slaz in control they continued to mount pressure on Adel but this proved risky as Adel came close with a counter attack which was dealt with a splendid save from the slaz keeper.

After this let off slaz did tighten up at the back but carried on mounting the pressure on Adel and it paid off as slaz got their third soon after. Simon Taylor made a charging run down the right wing and crossed the ball into the ‘D’ across the goal face and Robin Whawell tapped the ball back across goal for Byron Dean to deflect the ball into the bottom right corner.

With five minutes to go slaz capped off their great performance by getting their forth goal and Matt Middleton completing a well deserved hat-trick scoring off a short corner. The ball came out Ben Graham at the top of the ‘D’ who slipped the ball right to Matt Middleton who had a first time shot and went into the roof of the net off a deflection from a defender’s stick.

This was a great win for slaz and a massive improvement from the previous week, and more importantly their first clean sheet of the season. Slaz are at home next week against Doncaster 5’s.

Report: 20-11-2011 – Girls U10’s Mini Tournament

November 24, 2011 by Slazenger HC

Girls U10's A team 2011-2012 season

The U10 girls A team took part in the minis hockey tournament on Sunday morning and gave an excellent and enthusiastic performance. Despite being drawn in a group in which all the teams were from higher divisions in the Yorkshire Hockey YHL, the girls were able to up their game and compete as equals.

Slazenger (0) vs. (1) L.A.Carnegie
In the first game against Leeds Adel Carnegie, the team were unfortunate to concede an early goal and although an equaliser did not materialise, the girls gelled well together as a team.

Slazenger (0) vs. (4) Wakefield A
In the second against eventual group winners Wakefield A, despite the 0:4 result the experience the girls gained playing such a well structured side proved invaluable.

Slazenger (3) vs. (0)
By the final game the girls were playing well as a team with each individual player making a valuable contribution to the 3:0 victory. By finishing on such a positive note I hope we can take this into the YYHL tournament next Sunday on the 27th.

A special thankyou goes to Katie Brown who gave up her morning to support and umpire.
