Report: 24-10-1999 – Mens 1st’s (2) vs (1) York University (Cup)

Brothers Paul and Jonathan Wiper ensured Slazenger 1st’s progressed to the second round of the county cup as they defeated York University 2-1.

Man of the match Paul Wiper gave them an early lead against their division four hosts, but Uni showed their mettle by putting Slazengers under increasing pressure as the half progressed.

Slazenger came out after the break refreshed and extended their lead through Jonny Wiper, but then decided to sit back and despite a great performance by debutant DJ Brogan the match finished a disappointing 2-1 with Slazenger due to meet Leeds Uni or Tadcaster 1st’s in the next round.

Report: 23-10-1999 – Mens 5th’s (4) vs (6) Doncaster

Slazenger 5th’s traveled away to Doncaster for a hastily arranged friendly but their weakened side put up a good display in their 6-4 defeat.

Slazenger battled hard and showed good spirit with Haydn Foster scoring a hat trick, and Patrick Rivers also on target, with Jonathan Clewlow also outstanding.

On Saturday, Slazenger 5th’s entertain Boston spa, 3pm start.

Report: 23-10-1999 – Mens 4th’s (4) vs (0) Chapeltown

The fourths failed to turn first half pressure into points as Ian Wiper went close from two corners and Paul Wiper narrowly missing from James Walkers superb cross.

After the break, Slazenger showed a lot more purpose, with James Walker flicking in from the right side of the D and within four minutes, Paul Wiper had made it two with an excellent solo effort.

Paul Wiper scored a second from Killey’s incisive through ball and Slazenger clinched victory with a short corner strike from veteran Pete Hopwood.

Report: 23-10-1999 – Mens 3rd’s (4) vs (1) City of York 5th’s

Slazenger 3rd’s avenged an early season defeat by City of York 5th’s as they notched a 4-1 win courtesy of two of their youngest players.

A storming display by 17 year old Simon Taylor ripped York apart down the right.

But star billing was reserved for Richard Whawell, aged just 15 who scored a superb hat trick and showed some skillful wing play.

Slazengers other goal came from veteran Martin Lofthouse and there was another excellent performance from 17 year old Paul Johnson at the back.

On Saturday, Slazenger 3rd’s entertain Sheffield 6th’s, 1:30pm start.

Report: 23-10-1999 – Mens 2nd’s (2) vs (1) Huddersfield 2nd’s

Slazenger 2nd’s scored a last minute winner to secure a 2-1 victory at Huddersfield 2nd’s.

At the half time mark, Slazenger had shown why they can do well in the higher league with quick clean passing creating several chances.

Gilston scored the opener and Bagshaw kept the opposition out until the home side scored on the break.

Swinden replaced Bagshaw with five minutes left and the switch proved decisive as Swinden hit the ball into the D and Graham had only one thing on his mind as he hit a powerful shot past the home ‘keeper with just a minute to go.

On Saturday, Slazenger 2nd’s entertain Kings Cross 1st’s 4:30pm start.
