Report: 24-03-2012 – Ladies 2nds (3) vs. (1) Halifax 3rd’s

March 30, 2012 by Slazenger HC

Slaz ladies 2nds won a decisive but fractious 3-1 victory away at Halifax 3rd’s.

The team took a while to ajust to a boucy pitch, but before long Elle Poskett scored the opener, with Zoe Bacon following it up 2 minutes later.

As the game progressed, tempers raised, with Jessica Lloyd having to dodge a thrown stick!

However, halifax continued to press, with the game being played from end-to-end at fast pace. Halifax scored in response, but the game was put beyond doubt by a Daisy Gee-Sanders; scoring off of a short corner.

Slaz must win next weeks encounter with Heckmondwike to stay in contention for promotion

Report: 25-03-2012 – Ladies 3rd’s (6) vs. (3) City of York 5th’s

March 30, 2012 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger’s ladies 3rds last game of the season ended in triumph as they bagged 6 goals in a thrilling tie against city of York 5.

Gemma Whittam was again first to open their account, scoring from close range and Katie Browne soon following and netting a goal.

Julie Bacon then whipped a stunning goal in from the top of the D and Katie Browne got back in the action to score another. 4-0 up slaz let their defences down and city of York capitalised scoring 3 goals in 5 minutes.

Half time and an old school ‘pep talk’ from Mrs Finch inspired the team to go forward. Second half and Slazenger’s completely dominated with Julie bacon getting on the score sheet again and Sophie Williams converting a short corner. Final score 6-3 and Slazenger’s end the season on a euphoric note

Report: 24-03-2012 – Ladies 3rd’s (2) vs. (1) Thirsk

March 30, 2012 by Slazenger HC

Slaz ladies 3rd team put in an excellent team performance to reign triumphant over Thirsk.

Slaz demonstrated some excellent skills and field player with debutant Alice Gasgoine making an immediate impact, though it fell to Captain Gemma Whittam to slot home the opener. Thirsk battled back and their persistence paid off when they bagged a goal.

However Slaz didn’t let there heads drop and were rewarded when Rebecca Gummerson smacked home an amazing goal with a celebration to match. Final score 2-1 to slaz which secures a strong mid table position and books their place back in league 6 next year

Report: 18-03-2012 – Girls U10′s Last Tournament of the Season

March 20, 2012 by Slazenger HC

Having been the reason to cancel the last 3 of the girls tournaments, the weather more than made up for itself adding to the enjoyment of what proved to be a very successful and enjoyable mornings hockey.

Slazengers were able to once again field two teams, the A team playing in the “C” league (being made up of the year 5 girls), and the B team playing in the “D” league (being made up of girls years 2 – 4).

Although the younger girls did not manage to win any of their games this week, they enjoyed all their games and were beginning to work as a team.  They all have a few seasons still to play in this age group and if they continue to improve as they have this season they will in time become the team to beat!

The older girls continued the success of the last tournament, winning 4 out of the 5 games they played – missing out only to Wakefields B team – they finished 2nd in the league and would (had there been any more tournaments) have gained promotion to the “B” league,  the final league positions could have been a very different story had the cancelled tournaments gone ahead.  With only the goal keeper (Lily Gilbert) remaining eligable for u10’s next season, this team will, I’m sure, continue to grow in confidence and progress their game during next season playing in the U12 team.

Report: 17-03-2012 – Ladies 1st’s (2) vs. (1) Durham University 3rd’s

March 20, 2012 by Slazenger HC

Injury stricken Slaz were not looking forward to their first match without Sarah Hobbs but nevertheless started the game in a very structured way. Strong committed work in midfield and excellent distribution soon led to the first goal being scored by Slaz from a short corner, Jessica Rudge finding the back of the net.  The Uni team were clearly unsettled by this first goal and despite being cheered on by a man with a full fox fur around his neck were unable to find an immediate reply. They were ably contained by a buoyant Slaz team until near the end of the first half when the home team seemed to be distracted by another tweed suited supporter’s moustache and allowed Durham to level the score to make half time scores even.

After the team talk Slaz came out fighting again and soon had the lead when a perfectly placed ball from Laura Teasdale was tipped in by the Poacher Rudge for her second goal. The Uni side put everything they had into attacking but were constantly denied with some great strength down both channels from both newcomer Katie Browne and player of the match (and birthday girl) Sue Hope. With some great support from the Slaz men on the sideline, the ladies 1sts stayed strong to earn a well deserved 2-1 win and maintain their mid-table position.

Next week we ask for all the support possible as we face Huddersfield Dragons at home at 1.30pm.
