Report: 13-10-2012 – Mens 3rd’s (4) vs. (2) Grimsby 2nd’s

October 16, 2012 by Slazenger HC

The mens 3rd’s travelled away to Grimsby for their 4th game of the season, and came away with a tough fought win; their fourth of the season keeping them top of the table for a fourth week.
The team were slow to start off, and while several passages of play showed their usual passing dominance, the visitors were unable to really apply the flowing style which had marked out the first encounters this season. This lead to conceding an unfortunate first goal putting the team a goal behind for the second week in a row.
This seemed to get the team working again, and under constant pressure a short corner was won, which Paul Johnson rifled in from the top of the D, making things all level.
There continued to be a lot of back and forth, with some uncharacteristicly messy play making the game far harder for the visitors than it should have been. Jack Mumford manufactured the second goal, driving the ball hard and fast into towards the net, only for Steve Johnson to get a touch to it at the last second to claim the goal!
Grimsby came back into it and levelled. However in the second half, Slaz organised better, passing and controlling the run of play. With greater pressure on the home team, it was only a matter of time before a third was scored; a short corner dispatched by Ste Roberts.
With Grimsby tiring, the team continued to pressure. In the dying minuted of the game, a long ball from Paul Johnson found Steve Johnson, who passed the ball off to Luke Gueli, taking on the keeper and slotting the ball home to put the result beyond doubt.

Report: 09-04-2011 – Mens 3rd’s (3) vs (2) Grimsby 2nd’s

April 9, 2011 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger Mens 3rd team finished the season on a high, after beating the league leaders on their home turf.

Slaz traveled out to Grimsby on the last day of the season, looking to finish on the same good form they had demonstrated the week earlier. The game started quicker than usual, with both teams looking for the illusive first goal. Slaz pressed hard, and were well in side Grimsby’s half within minutes. Great work from midfielder Andy Fisher controlled the centre ground, and distributed it out to Slazenger’s front line.

However, Grimsby were not top of the table by accident, and used some strong passing and coordination to put pressure on the Slaz defence. Credit goes to Mark Kitchen and Chris Hopkinson for some outstanding defensive work, denying them any chances.

It was Slaz who secured the first goal after several shots going close. Man of the match Isaac Fisher controlled the ball in the area, and slotting it past the keeper. The first goal seemed to wake Grimsby up, and they levelled after a 5 minutes with a passing manoeuvre finished by a scrappy goal past ‘keeper James Walker. With two minutes remaining before half time, a great drive from Alan Perry found James Bennett, who defeated several players before blasting the ball past the keeper to put Slaz ahead in spectacular fashion.

The second half was as fast a tempo as the first, but with Slaz in the driving seat for a majority of it. However with Grimsby looking to draw level, it was not going to be easy to hold onto the lead. For the second time in the match, the opposition drew level; a mix up in the D allowing a player to go unmarked, scoring their 2nd.

Slazenger kept pressing, with Paul Corney, Andy Fisher and Paul Johnson all going close. With 15 minutes to go, the ball broke from the Slazenger half. Isaac Fisher passed the ball out to Ian Hedges, who carried it into the D, setting up Captain Paul Corney seal the win.

After a rollercoaster of a season, the Mens 3rd string end on a high, with a strong mid table finish.

Report: 05-03-2011 – Mens 3rd’s (2) vs (1) Grimsby

March 5, 2011 by Slazenger HC

After a disappointing performance last week, Slazenger Hockey Men’s 3rd team got back to winning ways with a hard fought victory against promotion seeking Grimsby. Slazenger edged the first half with some good passing hockey, making excellent use of the wings and creating several goal scoring opportunities.Their first goal was scored by Captain Paul Corney who converted through the keeper’s legs after a goal mouth scramble. Half-time score was 1-0. The second half was a closer affair with opportunities for flowing hockey limited due to resolute defending from both sides.

The visitors levelled the score when a deflected pass wrong footed the defence and was calmly converted by a grateful striker. Things got worse for Slazengers when Paul Johnson was yellow carded for an agricultural tackle and were temporarily down to 10 men.

However, the home team continued to press for the winner, which eventually came when Isaac Fisher provided a killer pass for Steve Johnson to score from close range. Final score 2-1. Slazenger’s next game is away to Rotherham.

Report: 02-10-2010 – Mens 1st’s (4) vs. (4) Grimsby 1st’s

October 2, 2010 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers Mens First XI entered their opening league game at home to Grimsby first team looking for a strong start and will come away disapointed with a 4-4 draw after being in control for the majority of the game.Slazengers started at a fast tempo and were on the score sheet inside a couple of minutes, John Sykes collecting a pass and finishing well on his reverse side. Grimsby however had a couple of very skillful players and were soon level. Slazengers kept pressing though and took the lead again when Jack Kitchen’s drag flick found the bottom corner. Grimsby however weren’t to be denied and went in at the break level after their centre forward scored an excellent individual goal. Slazengers began the second half controlling possession and with Grimsby not able to get control of the ball, Slazenger took the lead once again. Paul Wiper won a short corner which was duly converted, Phil Midgley with an excellent finish.

Slazengers didn’t let up and continued pressure, especially by Dan Perry down the right, eventually told with Jonny White finishing well in the top corner. This seemed to spark Grimsby into life and they pulled a goal back almost immediately. The final ten minutes were frantic and although they had the lead, Slazengers continued to press high up the pitch only to be caught on the break allowing Grimsby to equalize in the final minute.

James Walker took man of the match honours for Slazengers who will travel to Sheffield Hallam next week looking for their first win of the season.

March 24, 2001 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger Seconds secured their status in Yorkshire League Division 4 with a crucial 1-0 away win over Grimsby.

Andy Birkett scored the decisive goal midway through the first half while skipper Johnathan Walker produced some excellent goalkeeping to deny the visitors.

The turning point for Slazenger in a topsy-turvy season has been the introduction of Hayden Foster into the side. His experience and determination has provided the stability the team had lacked.
