After a disappointing performance last week, Slazenger Hockey Men’s 3rd team got back to winning ways with a hard fought victory against promotion seeking Grimsby. Slazenger edged the first half with some good passing hockey, making excellent use of the wings and creating several goal scoring opportunities.Their first goal was scored by Captain Paul Corney who converted through the keeper’s legs after a goal mouth scramble. Half-time score was 1-0. The second half was a closer affair with opportunities for flowing hockey limited due to resolute defending from both sides.
The visitors levelled the score when a deflected pass wrong footed the defence and was calmly converted by a grateful striker. Things got worse for Slazengers when Paul Johnson was yellow carded for an agricultural tackle and were temporarily down to 10 men.
However, the home team continued to press for the winner, which eventually came when Isaac Fisher provided a killer pass for Steve Johnson to score from close range. Final score 2-1. Slazenger’s next game is away to Rotherham.
