Report: 01-02-2003 – Ladies 2nd’s (7) vs (0) Halifax

February 1, 2003 by Slazenger HC

Despite the Arctic conditions, Slazenger ladies seconds secured a magnificent 7-0 win at Halifax in Yorkshire Ladies League division 6.

The Slazenger squad showed they were a force to be reckoned with when they took the lead in the first five minutes and thanks to unrelenting pressure from mud-field let 4-0 at half time.

Halifax regrouped at half-time, but Slazenger ‘keeper Sarah Pollard kept them out as the visitors remained determined to stay in control, with Julie Mills and Clair Finch distributing the ball well and Julie Bacon, Laura Teasdale and Chelsea Armitage collected the balls from midfield and continued to slot them home.

Victoria Thornton deservedly won player of the match as she was strong in defence and creative in attack and she scored along with Armitage and Bacon, with Teasdale and Julie Finch scoring two each.

Report: 14-12-2002 – Ladies 2nd’s (11) vs. (0) Leeds 3rd’s

December 14, 2002 by Slazenger HC

Laura Teasdale and Julie Finch claimed hat-tricks as Slazenger Ladies hit double figures for the second time in as many weeks, this time against Yorkshire Division 6 opposition Leeds Thirds.

Slazenger immediately gained control in midfield and within minutes Teasdale connected with the ball to open the scoring.

Julie Finch fighting fit after recovering from an injury, forced herself deep into the heart of the opposition defence to help increase the Slazenger lead.

Slazenger maintained the pressure throughout the match and the goals flowed at regular intervals.

Leeds tried in vain to enter Slazenger’s half but they were met by the formidable force of Helen Ramshaw and Claire Mills.

Chelsea Armitage and Luise PRatt created an attacking partnership which would have left any side working hard to contain them.

The other goalscorers were Chelsea Armitage (2), Harriett Worth, Louise Pratt and Claire Mills.

Report: 16-02-2002 – Mens 3rd’s (2) vs (1) Huddersfield 3rd’s

February 16, 2002 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger thirds took another giant stride up the Yorkshire League Division 6 with a narrow 2-1 victory away at local rivals Huddersfield thirds.

The visitors opened well, passing the ball fluently and creating chances from the start. Robert Stephens led the forward line well but it was Jonathan Clewlow who opened the scoring for Slazenger, beating the goalie at the top of the D after being put through by playmaker Simon Miller.

Slazenger’s rearguard of Micky Turner, Ian Wiper and keeper Jonathan Walker were in formidable form, restricting the Huddersfield front line to limited chances.

In the second half, a quickly taken 16 yard hit started the move that swept the full length of the pitch and led to Slazenger’s second goal. James Walker’s fine run set up Clewlow for his second goal of the day. Huddersfield pulled a goal back late on but the visitors’ defence held firm for the win.

Report: 16-02-2002 – Mens 1st’s (1) vs. (4) Stockton 1st’s

February 16, 2002 by Slazenger HC

Depleted Slazenger were ultimately beaten by a three-goal second-half blast from Stockton in division 2 of the Northern Counties League.
The visitors started well and dominated the game for the majority of the first half. But the home side scored just before the break and the goal shook Slazenger’s confidence.

The second half was disappointing for Slazenger who struggled to contain the hosts’ swift, incisive breaks.

Man of the match Simon Chamberlain was outstanding in the visiting defence but he was powerless to prevent the three second-half strikes that put paid to any thoughts Slazenger had of a comeback.

Richard Whawell scored Slazenger’s consolation and there were also fine contributions from Mark Butel and Simon Kaye.

On Saturday, Slazenger entertain Newcastle University, 1.30pm start.

Report: 01-02-2002 – Mens 2nd’s (3) vs. (2) Halifax 2nd’s

February 1, 2002 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger Seconds continued their climb up the Yorkshire League Division 4 table with a well-earned victory against table topping Halifax Seconds.

In a scrappy first half, both sides cancelled each other out with spoiling tactics that prevented flowing hockey.

Although Ben Graham scored for Slazenger the game was still deadlocked at half time, 1-1.

Slazenger came out after the break more focused and determined on the job in hand, the whole side appeared to gel from the off.

Alec Gilston, back on form, scored the two goals then ultimately sealed victory with the midfielders Andy Foreman, Johnny White and Ben Graham taking control of the game.

Skipper Matt Birkett kept the momentum going but Halifax fought back to reduce the deficit to just one goal.

Cool defending from Bob Wood and man of the match Thomas Penistone in goal saw Slazenger through to a deserved victory on the back of an excellent all-round team performance.
