Report: 05-12-2015 – Mens 2nd’s (4) vs. (2) University of Leeds 2nd’s

December 5, 2015 by Slazenger HC

After going 4 games without a win, Slazengers were relieved to find 3 points again after running out 4-2 winners at home to University of Leeds mens 2’s.

Slazengers were boosted by the return of Will Buckley playing his first game of the season and immediately put Leeds under pressure creating a number of chances. Slazengers broke the deadlock after a quick break resulted in Daz Buttery finding Simon Randall who finished well from a narrow angle. Slazengers doubled their lead when captain Ben Graham picked up the ball in midfield, drove to the ‘D’ and finished well under the onrushing keeper to give Slazengers a 2-0 lead at half time.

Leeds must have had strong words as they came out of the break the better side and scored 2 quick goals to draw level. Slazengers settled back into their rhythm however and began controlling the game again with the Leeds keeper making a number of saves to keep them in it. Slazengers took the lead again when Graham grabbed his second following a goalmouth scramble and the points were sealed when Buckley got on the scoresheet in the final minutes.

Slazengers will look to build on this win away to Chapeltown on Saturday.

Report: 05-12-2015 – Ladies 2nd’s (2) vs. (1) University of Leeds 4th’s

December 5, 2015 by Slazenger HC

Arriving at a windy cold Leeds with 11 players to their 16 it looked like it was going to be a challenge.

Slazengers went out hard as always but the first 10 minutes saw Leeds looking like the stronger team. Slazengers settled into their game and then took control.

Claire Dunstan was the first to find the back board giving Slazengers the lead. Slazengers defended well when Leeds had the ball with some excellent saves and clearances from short corners. Claire Dunstan then drew the Leeds keeper to her and slipped the ball to Katie Minchella for her to put the ball away. Leeds managed to pull a goal back and then Slazengers defended a last whistle short corner to keep the 3 points.

Player went to Katie Minchella.

Report: 24-10-2015 – Mens 2nd’s (4) vs. (3) University of Leeds 2nd’s

October 24, 2015 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers Mens 2nd team had a double header this weekend. Saturday saw them travel to Leeds University 2’s and although putting in a below par performance, still came away with a 4-3 victory. Slazengers started well and created a number of opportunities but struggled to find the net when it seemed easier to score. The deadlock was eventually broken when Ted Richardson finished strongly on his reverse stick. Richardson grabbed his second shortly afterwards only for Leeds Uni to hit back straight away. Slazengers continued to battle and Richardson completed a first half hat trick to go into the break 3-1 up. The second half saw Leeds Uni immediately pull one back and then draw level mid way through the half. Slazengers were up against it for a while but managed to weather the storm and hit back with the winner shortly before full time, Simon Chamberlain withstanding a number of physical challenges before slotting home.

Sunday saw a much changed Slazengers 2’nd team travel to Lincoln for a cup fixture. The long journey and unfamiliar line up saw Slazengers struggle with Lincoln going 4-0 up inside the first 20 minutes. Slazengers could have been forgiven if their heads went down but they didn’t and began the fight back. Captain Ben Graham scored the 1st from a good short corner routine and Matt Stacey pulled another back after catching the Lincoln defense napping off a free hit. Graham grabbed his second before the break to go in at the half 4-3 down. Slazengers were eager to continue the fightback in the 2nd half and took the game to Lincoln, Graham completed his hat-trick off another short corner and Andy Birkett scored to put Slazengers in front for the first time in the game.

Lincoln were shocked into action and continued to introduce fresh legs from their subs bench, a luxury Slazengers couldn’t afford having only 11 players, and managed to draw level meaning the game went to penalty flicks. A total of 20 flicks were taken, 10 of which were in sudden death and despite Slazengers keeper Daz Buttery making 3 saves, Lincoln managed to score the decisive flick to go through.

With a special line up containing 2 players that have been MIA for a few seasons and another player who has an adorable 2 week old baby, Slazengers got off to a strong start. Plenty of attacking play, passing and moving and the work off the ball was phenomenal.

Leeds Uni did manage to get some time on the ball, scoring 2, but were never in front or drawing level because Slazengers got an amazing 6 goals!! Scorers were Elle Poskett, Claire Mills, Sue Hope, Naomi Frith and 2 goals and player of the match for Mollie Gilbert!!

October 25, 2014 by Slazenger HC

After only playing the university of Leeds 2 weeks ago and losing 5-2 we were in for a tough game. Slazengers started well with plenty of chances and the majority of play.

No goals had come by half time. After half time Slazengers came back even stronger and managed to get 2 goals in quick succession. The university of Leeds never recovered from those goals and defended until the end in order to stop Slazengers scoring more. Final score 2-0 to Slazengers.

Goals for Claire Dunstan and Naomi Horsley. Man of the match went to Claire Dunstan.

Report: 30-11-2013 – Ladies 2nd’s (3) vs. (3) Leeds University 4th’s

November 30, 2013 by Slazenger HC

Another tough game against a team in the top half of the table.

The game started well with some good possession and some chances on goal. Elle Poskett got the first goal putting Slazengers into the lead. Some more hard work and linked play gave Daisy Gee Sanders a goal. Leeds then started to come back managing to get 2 goals themselves.

Then disaster Leeds scored again putting them in front but after many chances on goal Elle Poskett game through with some more silky skills to score the equaliser! The game finished 3-3 and Slazenger Ladies 2’s are still unbeaten.

Man of the match went to Andrea Wallace for her work rate and ball distribution from mid field.

Report: 12-10-2013 – Mens 2nd’s (3) vs. (3) Leeds Gryphons 5th’s

October 12, 2013 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers mens 2nd team continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 3-3 draw at home to Leeds Gryphons but in reality were lucky to get anything out of the game. Leeds came with a large squad and their extra legs paid off with Slazengers continually getting overrun in the midfield however some hard defending and good work kept Leeds out. It was Slazengers who took the lead when Jack Mumford’s speculative shot took a deflection off a defender to wrong foot the keeper and go in. The favour was repaid when a Leeds shot was deflected past his own goalkeeper by Murray Amesbury to go in at the break at 1-1.

The 2nd half was a similar affair, Slazengers working hard and trying to create things but Leeds ever changing line up had the edge. Leeds took the lead through a penalty stroke and then went 3-1 in front mid way through the 2nd half. Slazengers could have been forgiven for letting their heads drop and despite a yellow card for Ste Roberts, kept the scoreline as it was.

As the game entered the last 10 minutes, Slazengers started to get on top and were pressing the Leeds defence going close on a number of occasions. Ben Graham finally made the breakthrough slamming home a lose ball. Slazengers were left with 4 minutes to try and find an equalizer and did exactly that when Simon Randall got on the end of a good move to pull the Horbury side level. There was still time for Slazengers to press for a winner but in the end settled for the draw.

Report: 05-10-2013 – Mens 3rd’s (2) vs. (3) Leeds Gryphons 6th’s

October 5, 2013 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers faced a tough task against a fast, skillful Leeds University side for their latest division 5 fixture. They knew they would have to play with lots of energy and great determination. So it was pleasing when for the first 20 minutes of the match they were the dominant team, playing good passing, aggressive hockey. The Horbury team created several decent scoring chances without managing to convert any of these chances.

Leeds Gryphons were too good a team not to fight their way back into the match and for the rest of the 1st half put Slazengers under the cosh. Rich Smyth, the home keeper had to be on his guard to prevent the opposition from scoring.
Second half was more of the same with the university side looking the more mobile and better organised team. It was no surprise when they eventually took the lead after some concerted pressure, but it was disappointing when they quickly scored two further goals to take a 3-0 lead.

Once again the Horbury side showed their character by refusing to accept defeat and for the last quarter of the match, took the game to the opposition once again, winning penalty corner after penalty corner.

It was from one of these corners that man of the match Luke Gueli stroked the ball over the keeper for a goal. Slazengers continued to look to score, skipper Andy Fisher had a snap shot from the top of the goalmouth saved by the Leeds keeper and defender Tony Walker made the score more respectable when he converted another penalty corner with the last hit of the game.

Final score 3-2 to Leeds Gryphons.
