Straight from the start, Slazenger set out their stall to take the game to a side the Horbury men had never beaten. Dominant play, allied to midfield pressure, saw panic-striken Adel forced to defend contantly well into the second period, with a strategic interval sustitution by Slazenger coach Peter Hopwood seeing the introduction of captain Mark Butel, who upped the tempo of the Horbury men once more. Slazenger 2nd's exorcised their ghosts against university opposition with a 3-1 win over Hull University 2nd's. Richard Whawell's sharp finishing produced the first goal as he latched onto the rebount off his first-shot to force the ball home. Veteran Simon Miller then turned in a vintage performance to smash home two further goals, the pick being an accurately targeted thunderbolt from the edge of the D which flew just inside the far post. Slazenger 5th's edged past Huddersfield 7th's 1-0 amid driving rain on Saturday. Both sides had excellent chances to win the game, but superb goalkeeping and defending kept everyone on tenterhooks. The break came from a short corner in the second half with Richard Baker sneaking the bal home at the far post. The final 15 minutes were very tense, but Slaz help firm.
