York

Report: 21-02-2004 – Mens 1st’s (3) vs (3) York 2nd’s

February 21, 2004 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger would have taken a point at the start of the match against high-flying York, but were ultimately dissapointed having let a three-goal lead slip away.

The Horbury side began this North League East Division 2 fixture the stronger with Jonny White and Mark Swinden establishing an early grip in midfield.

It was no surprise then when they opened the scoring inside the first five minutes, from a well worked penalty corner, converted by Richard Whawell.

Slazenger continued to play some attractive passing hockey and Alec Gilston doubled their lead taking advantage of some panic in the York rear-guard.

The home side were in ecstasy as Gilston finished off an excellent cross from Paul Wiper who, in turn, had been set up by an intelligent cross-field pass from Whawell.

Slazenger suffered a severe blow when talisman player-coach Mike Thornicroft had to leave the field with a finger injury and whilst they were trying to reorganise their defence, York pulled a goal back.

Slazenger started the second half brightly , although too many attacks were directed down the centre of the field rather than down the flanks.

However, they were rocked back by a controversial York second, with the visiting striker having clearly kicked the ball through at the top of the circle.

Thornicroft returned to the fray bandaged up, but he was soon in the wars again suffering a cut to the head. He and the rest of the home defence were powerless to prevent York’s scrambled equaliser.

Slazenger could have crumbled at this stage but they held on for a point and nearly snatched a winner when York goal-keeper produced a tremendous save to deny Swinden a last-gasp winner.

Report: 01-03-2003 – Mens 3rd’s (1) vs. (1) City of York 5th’s

March 1, 2003 by Slazenger HC

In a highly entertaining match between two evenly matched sides – Slazenger thirds and visitors City of York fifths a 1-1 draw was probably the fairest result.

Slazenger moved the ball round nicely in the first half against York and had the best chance of the game, but failed to make it count.

It took a touch of magic to break the deadlock, Paul Wiper dancing through several players and riding a crude tackle before firing in an unstoppable shot.

The goal, however sparked York into life and Thomas Penistone was called upon to make some top-notch saves.

York’s pressure eventually paid off with a scrambled goal late on.

Report: 26-01-2002 – Mens 2nd’s (1) vs. (2) York 3rd’s

January 26, 2002 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger seconds’ run of wins came to an unfortunate end with a 2-1 defeat at York thirds. Gilston put Slazenger one up in the first half, while super support play from Matthew Birkett and Gavin Kaye kept the visitors on top.

York scored twice on the break in the second half very much against the run of play.

Report: 26-01-2002 – Mens 1st’s (0) vs. (2) York 2nd’s

January 26, 2002 by Slazenger HC

Depleted Slazenger also lacked sufficient quality to stifle North East Pennine League Division 2 rivals York.Gritty defending through the first half kept the scores level.

Paul Wiper and man of the match Warren Sheppard provided positive midfield play, but the side lacked penetrative flair up front.
Outstanding goalkeeping from Dave Hellam denied York until five minutes from time when the Minster men struck twice in quick successions.
