An outstanding performance from Slazenger third’s front line gained them a convincing win over York.

Man of the match Richard Whawell led the way with two superb scoring strikes.

Whawell struck in the opening minutes, finishing a slinking run from inside his own half with a shot that left the goalkeeper no chance.

Gavin Kaye and John Sykes, the other front men, then combined for the second, scored by the latter.

York hit back with a goal before half-time, but Slazenger continued their dominance and were rewarded with second-half goals for Whawell, Sykes and Kaye.

Report: 02-12-2000 – Mens 3rd’s (1) vs (1) City of York 5th’s

December 2, 2000 by Slazenger HC

In a highly entertaining match between two evenly matched sides, Slazenger thirds and visitors City of York 5th’s, a 1-1 draw was probably the fairest result.

Slazenger moved the ball around nicely in the first half against York and had the best chance of the game, but failed to make it count.

It took a touch of magic to break the deadlock, Paul Wiper dancing through several players and riding a crude tackle before firing in an unstoppable shot.

The goal however, sparked York into life and Thomas Penistone was called upon to make some top notch saves.

York’s pressure eventually paid off with a scrambled goal late on.

Slazenger thirds entertain Huddersfield on Saturday (3pm)
