Report: 08-12-2012 – Mens 5th’s (7) vs. (0) Wakefield 7th’s

December 19, 2012 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger Men’s 5’s took on local rivals Wakefield in a friendly and after a tight, evenly contested 1st half no one would have been able to accurately guess the final score at the half-time interval, when the match was tied at 0-0.

Both teams worked hard and had opportunities to dominate but just a lack of control at important moments or poor decision making meant that there were few meaningful attacks for either side. Slazenger keeper Harry Buttery never touched the ball once in the first half.

The second half started much better for the home team, Chris Gascoigne was tenacious on the left wing tackling adults and juniors with equal effectiveness and debutant Tom Atkinson was starting to find his feet in midfield.

It wasn’t long before striker Peter Gunning found his range and netted for Slazengers after a good move down the right wing by George Fealy. Once the first goal went in Slazengers couldn’t stop scoring. Peter Gunning scored three more times. All the goals were the result of decent team play, accurate passing and players getting behind the Wakefield defence.

Elliott Golding was proving to be a catalyst for lots of good attacks down the right hand side with Danny Moakes breaking down Wakefield attacks on the left and quickly turning defence into attack.

Such was the protection Danny Croxall and Adam Drake offered in defence, that there was only one notably attack for the home keeper to deal with in the second half.

Slazenger continued to press, such was their dominance and Harry Gunning weighed in with a brace of goals and Danny Moakes managed to get on the end of an attack that he had initiated.

Final score 7-0.

Report: 01-12-2012 – Mens 5th’s (2) vs. (1) Rotherham 4th’s

December 5, 2012 by Slazenger HC

After a postponment last week Slazengers 5ths were keen to get into there match against Rotherham away at the Aurora stadium. However they certainly didn’t have things their own way.

In a very tight first half Slazengers failed to break down a well organised Rotherham defence and had to relie on some good defensive work from Matthew Smith and alert goalkeeping from Harry Buttery.

The 2nd half saw Slazengers move up a gear and a great run down the right and an excellent cross from George Fealy was well finished by Elliot Golding for the first goal.

Tom Pitchforth again worked hard in midfield and showed some skillful touches to counteract some very good Rotherham build up play but it was Slazengers who went further in front when Ben Jackson’s penatrative pass once again released George Fealy and after a goalmouth scramble Elliot Goulding maintained his composure to clinically fire the ball home and put Slazengers into a 2-0 lead.

Just when it looked like the game was over a late breakaway and shot from Rotherham was cruely deflected into Slazengers goal to denie Harry Buttery his ‘Clean Sheet’ but Slazengers comfortably saw out the remaining few minutes to seal victory.

There was also a great debut performance from Chris Gascoigne who impressed with his skill and tenacious play on the left and another sound performance from Danny Croxall at right defence.

Report: 20-10-2012 – Mens 5th’s (1) vs. (0) Rotherham 5th’s

October 23, 2012 by Slazenger HC

Gunning on fire again!!

Slazenger Men’s 5th team were playing at home against Rotherham in their latest fixture in the Yorkshire development league.

Fielding a young team the home side had to weather early pressure from the opposition who were strong in defence and had several skillful opponents in midfield.

That said, Danny Croxall and Dave Smyth were resolute in defence and quickly snuffed out and danger.

The only time Slazenger keeper Harry Buttery was called into action he was quickly off his line and cleared the ball away with his pads.

A couple of adjustments to the team formation helped even the game out and the Slazenger midfield of Harry Gunning and Tom Pitchforth began to exert pressure of their own. It was from one of these attacks that allowed Peter Gunning to find space at the top of the goalmouth to sweep his shot passed the outstretched Rotherham keeper.

Slazengers mounted several more attacks during the first half in a very even game, but were unable to convert these chances.

Rotherham lost one of their players just before the end of the first half when he was accidentally struck in the head and had to leave the field to have his injury attended to.

Second half Slazenger’s probably edged the game in terms of possession and chances created but just couldn’t find the net. Owen Bland had a great chance to deflect the ball into the net but the pass from Geoff Birkett was just a bit too quick for him to react to.

A special mention goes to Matthew Chilton who made his debut for the team and worked tirelessly down the left flank.

Final score 1-0.

Report: 13-10-2012 – Mens 5th’s (3) vs. (0) Kingston Upon Hull 4th’s – “All the Fun of the Fair”

October 16, 2012 by Slazenger HC

On Saturday 13th October a long drive to Hull eventually brought the reward of a match well played and won. Having Yorkshire’s biggest fair set up next to the pitch was never going to make things easy especially as the music and waltzers started halfway through the game, but a solid flowing performance from the Men’s fifth team saw a well earned victory against Hull.

The back four of Steve Fealy, Matthew Smith, Danny Croxall and David Smyth held a solid line and moved the ball easily out of danger from any Hull attacks. The midfield of Harry Gunning, Tom Pitchforth, Geoff Birkett and Ben Jackson moved the ball well across the pitch easily able to make use of the left or right side. Elliot Goulding and Peter Gunning led the forward line with both boys looking to add to their goal tallies.

It was Harry Gunning however who scored first with an impressive early run into the D scoring past a frustrated defender and helpless keeper. Great triangular passes and work from Geoff Birkett and Tom Pitchforth saw the ball released to Ben on the wing early to always give attacking options.

Danny Smith made several successful appearances from midfield to defence as some team tinkering pushed Danny Croxall to right wing and after rolling on the ground like an Italian footballer during one tackle he settled well into his new role making solid sweeps and passes that played to his strengths.

Slaz had the game in the bag now so the left and right backs in the shape of Danny Smith and Steve Fealy pushed on for possession and Steve’s fine passing sweep in front of goal saw a panicked defender turn the ball into his own net. Steve still claims it as his own though. Peter Gunning was now hunting for a goal to add to his goal a game claim he didn’t disappoint with a scrambled effort to put Slaz three nil up and eventual victors.

Report: 06-10-2012 – Mens 5th’s (Dev.) (3) vs. (4) Doncaster 7th’s

October 15, 2012 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger 5’s faced tough opposition in Doncaster 7’s but met the challenge with lots of spirit and hard work. Doncaster started the game more quickly and looked a well disciplined side, battling well in midfield and using their young, skilful players up front to great effect. Matthew Smith in the centre of defence had to work very hard with Adam Drake to keep the opposition at bay.

After absorbing a lot of pressure Slazenger’s did begin to mount some attacks of their own with debutants Owen Bland and Alex King in midfield trying to release the centre forwards into dangerous areas of the pitch. The home side have yet to field a settled side this season but everyone contributed for the team with Harry Buttery in goal playing a blinder. Wingers Elliot Goulding and George Fealy worked tirelessly on the flanks but often with little reward.

It was no surprise that Slazenger’s finally succumbed to the Doncaster pressure when they quickly conceded a couple of goals midway through the first half. However, they didn’t capitulate and were finally rewarded with a goal of their own with a neatly taken effort from centre forward Peter Gunning. Half time 2-1.

Second half the man-marking was tightened up and this did free the home side for more attacking opportunities. One of the chances was converted by midfielder Harry Gunning to bring the team back level at 2-2.

But parity was short lived when the opposition responded with a quick brace of goals to take the advantage once again. However, Slazenger 5’s showed their character once again when they quickly responded with Peter Gunning getting his second of the day.

Slazenger’s very nearly managed to grab a late equaliser when Danny Smith had a fierce shot deflected off the keepers pads. Final score 4-3.
