Report: 08-12-2012 – Ladies 1st’s (1) vs. (3) Leeds Uni 1st’s

December 19, 2012 by Slazenger HC

It’s a long long time since Slaz played a match without even getting one short corner – however this is what happened at Weetwood on Saturday. With Training cancelled on Thursday perhaps Slaz were a little unprepared, however Leeds Ladies’ top of the League position was completely justified by their performance on the day.
Leeds started very strongly and it soon became clear that this was going to be a hard game. Slaz managed to hold on for some time before conceding with some excellent defending by player of the match Amy Smeaton, but inevitably Leeds found the back of the Slaz net twice in the first half.

After a constructive half time team talk, Slaz put in a much better second half performance. Even then, they only managed to get into the Leeds D a couple of times. After lots of tireless work by the midfield, Slaz were eventually rewarded with their only goal – a tap in by captain Helen Hough after good work by Claire Mills and Amanda Sowerby on the right hand side. Congratulations to Leeds on a great performance!

Next week is away at Doncaster at 12.00, the last game before the Christmas break.

Report: 10-11-2012 – Mens 2nds (2) vs. (1) Leeds University 6th’s

November 19, 2012 by Slazenger HC

Top of the table clash this week for Slaz 2s at home hosting Leeds Uni 6s.

The match was a close one and could have gone either way with both teams creating chances but not capitalising on them. Leeds Uni scored first half way through the first half with a well worked attack but Slaz equalised quickly through Matt Stacey who scored from a rebound after Ben Grahams shot.

Both team fought hard and were pushing for the victory but Slaz scored their winner with only a minute to go. It was scored by John Sykes after the leeds uni keeper had made 2 saves.

Slaz travel to Leeds Adel Carnegie 4s next week.

Report: 28-01-2012 – Mens 2nd’s (1) vs. (2) Leeds University 6th’s

January 31, 2012 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger Men’s 2nd Team had an away match against Leeds University 6th Team. It was a close match with only a mistake costing Slaz a draw. The home team started off the strongest but were not able to score against a tight Slaz defence. Slaz then pushed back creating chances of their own, but like the home team they were unable to score.

With twenty minutes played Leeds Uni scored two quick gaols, the first was from a short corner, and the second was created by a mistake from Slaz Captain Rob Whawell whose sloppy pass was intercepted and Leeds Uni scored on a quick counter attack. Slaz were soon back in it with a great team Goal. Matt Middleton flicked the ball from midfield to the edge of the Leeds Uni D to Ben Graham who passed to Simon Randall who took it passed one played and chipped the ball passed the keeper. Leeds Uni created more chances but the Slaz defence held firm until half time.

Although there were no gaols in the second half it was by no means dull. Instead of Slaz sitting back and playing defensive hockey, they took the match to Leeds Uni and the result was end to end hockey. Both teams created more chances but were unable to score. Man of the match Jez Whawell was the engine in midfield for Slaz, he was up with the attacks, back defending, and covering positions when needed. Slaz were unlucky not to get a draw but Leeds Uni had played the better hockey.

Next weekend Slaz have a double header, a home match on Saturday against leeds 5th Team, and An away match on the Sunday against Hull University 2nd Team. Hopefully they will be able to pick up their first points of 2012.

Report: 29-10-2011 – Mens 2nd’s (4) vs. (3) University of Leeds 6th’s

October 29, 2011 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger men’s 2nd team managed to keep their unbeaten record at home this season with a 4-3 win over University of Leeds 6’s. The match was a close one with some great play created by both teams but was overshadowed by disapline issues, with the match having two yellow cards and a red card. Slaz started off the better team and scored two early goals. The first was a great team goal which was started by Ben Graham who ran the ball through to the top of the ‘D’ and passed to man of the match Isaac Fisher who crossed it to Byron Dean who struck the ball home. Slaz’s second came from a saved shot from Ben Graham and Simon Randall pulled the ball back and flicked it over the keeper. With slaz leading comfortably the game saw 2 yellow cards being shown at once.

Slaz captain Robin Whawell was fouled twice in a row but lashed out at the second foul just before the umpire awarded Slazenger the free hit. This earned him a deserved yellow card, but a Leeds player was also shown a yellow card for continues arguing with the umpire. With tempers running high the match was full of reckless challenges and turned from an enjoyable close contest to unfriendly and rough. The visitors managed to pull a goal back just before half time. At half time the slaz captain went over to the Leeds team to apologise a third time for his actions in an effort to try to calm the match down.

The second half started as the first had started with slaz creating most of the chances and were rewarded with a third goal. Ben Graham ran down the right wing and cut in and passed the ball to Isaac Fisher who had a shot but was saved by the keeper but Simon Randall was there to score his second off the rebound. Although slaz had a strong lead it didn’t stay that way for long and Leeds soon pulled one back to make it 3-2. Although the game had calmed down compared to the first half tempers were still running high and both teams were making reckless challenges. Leeds then had a player shown a red card for a dangerous and aggressive challenge.

Robin Whawell had the ball and was about to be challenged by one Leeds player when another player charged at him from the other side with his elbow high and collided with the slaz captain. The player was shown a straight red and was told to leave the pitch, Leeds were not impressed by their own players behaviour and the Leeds Uni captain was quick to run off the subs bench to discipline his player and to apologise to Robin who luckily only had grazes and a sore head from the challenge.

With ten minutes to go and Leeds down to ten men Slaz scored their forth goal which was again started by Ben Graham who ran the ball through midfield and passed out to Simon Taylor who dribbled the ball down the right wing to the back line and passed the ball back to the penalty spot to Anwar Al-Khaili to strike the ball passed the keeper. This should’ve sealed the match but Leeds scored their third goal soon after and with five minutes to go they were pressing for an equaliser but slaz’s defense managed to keep Leeds out. Although slaz grabbed all three points the win was tarnished by both sides aggression and lack of discipline. Next week slaz play Hull University at home.

Report: 24-09-2011 – Ladies 2nd’s (3) vs (3) Leeds University

September 24, 2011 by Slazenger HC

Very fast competitive first game of the season. First goal scored by Leeds which was immediately equalised by Slazengers (Lauren Roberts).

After many close shots on goal by Slazengers, Leeds were awarded and scored from a penalty corner, however Slazengers determination yielded another goal (Elle Poskett) so at half time the score was 2 – 2. The second half was dominated by Slazengers with multiple shots on goal by Sue Hope, with Leeds struggling to break through a strong Slazenger defence.

Leeds gained a third goal when the opposition umpire failed to signal that the ball had gone out of play, determined not to lose by default Slazengers battled to the end and scored the equaliser in the last minute of play (Daisy Gee-Sanders) leaving the score 3 – 3.
