Slazenger were already preparing themselves for a hard game against Leeds who arrived in Horbury with a 3 game unbeaten record and sitting top of the League. It was soon re-enforced that that this was not going to be an easy match for Slaz unlike the previous week! Slaz and Leeds seemed quite evenly matched in the first half with both teams getting close to scoring a couple of times, however Leeds managed to find the back of the net first.
Slaz fought hard to regain the ground and soon replied with a great strike from an Amanda Sowerby short corner to level the game. Determined play by Slazenger led to newcomer Hannah Field’s second goal in two weeks but Leeds once again had managed to reply as they went into the half time break on an even footing of 2 goals each.
The second half was always going to be a closely fought affair as Leeds tried to unsettle the home team using both verbal and physical tactics. However the Slaz players refused to rise to the bait as player of the match Katie Browne and the rest of the midfield worked especially hard to contain the Leeds attacks. Special mention to the defence who remained solid with goalkeeper Eleanor Townend making a couple of vital saves to keep Slaz in the game.
The full time score remained at 2-2; in all honesty a fair reflection of the match. Next week’s game is expected to be every bit as challenging with Slaz due to travel to Rotherham.
