The ladies development team travelled to Sheffield for their first fixture of the season. The team comprised mainly year 9 and 10 girls, most of whom are new to the club, 3 ladies from the successful Back to Hockey sessions that ran through the summer and 2 new senior members who have some recent hockey experience.
The first twenty minutes of the game saw a young but confident Sheffield side take a five goal lead, while our new team were becoming familiar with their new environment and new team mates. Slazengers settled into the game and became more confident in the last 15 minutes of the first half battling hard, making some strong tackles and creating more play in their own attacking half, resulting in a well worked goal by Izzy Andrassey.
For most of the second half the team continued to work hard, getting into good positions and creating more chances, however luck was not on their side. Fatigue started to show and a well drilled Sheffield tested our mid-field and defence to the max and managed to score a further five
goals.
The final score, 10-1, does not reflect the sterling effort made by the whole team and the quality of hockey played. There were many positives to take from the game and hopefully as the team become more familiar with each other and confidence builds the results will improve also.
