Slaz carried their winning streak into the following day with a 4- 1 win at home to visiting Sheffield University Bankers 7ths. In a rearranged fixtures, Slaz were looking to put down a marker and push further ahead at the top of the table.
Just before the whistle went, thick fog rolled in, making for an ominous start. However, Slaz pushed on and immediately went on the offensive. Sheffield defended well, and stood strong against the pressure. After 15 minutes, Ian Hedges was subbed on, and five minutes later a fast attacking run from Ste Roberts set him up to go one on one with gatekeeper and slot the ball home.
Slaz continued to press and we’re rewarded by a second goal by Jack Mumford, building on his tally from the day before. A solid strike form the edge of the D, defeating the keeper.
However, an unfortunate error meant the visitors scored a few minutes from the half time whistle.
In the second half, Slaz continued to work the ball in midfield, finding holes in the Sheffield defence. While Sheffield counter attacked, the excellent defending of Paul Johnson, Tony Walker and Alan Perry ( who made a stick save on the line) held them at bay. As the game went on, the home teams pressure bore fruit;Johnson dispatched a short corner, and Ste Roberts scored a flick to put the game beyond doubt.
Next week the 3rds travel to Brigg for the 2nd round of the cup.
