Slazenger went into the game with Halifax with three key squad members missing but were still hopeful that their last years’ experience of playing in the league might count for something.
Slaz started positively and strongly, so were somewhat shell-shocked when a breakaway by Halifax led to their first goal; completely against the run of play. Determined to level the score, Slaz continued to attack and were rewarded when an Amanda Sowerby strike from a short corner found the back of the net. This spurred on the other forwards and a further two goals were scored in quick succession by captain Helen Hough to give Slaz the half time advantage.
The Halifax coach’s half time team talk must have spurred them on as they came out strongly and the game seemed to even out much more. However the Green Army proved to be too much for Halifax to handle and despite the opposition managing to score a further goal, two fantastic goals by Jessica Rudge soon had Slaz back in their stride. Katie Browne sealed the game with another great goal to make the final score 2-6 in Slazenger’s favour. Next week brings a difficult game against Chapeltown at home 1.30pm – all supporters welcome!
