Slaz ladies 1st team faced off against one of the strongest teams in the league; Newcastle university 1st team. After a fast and furious game, the team came away with a solid draw, in a 6 goal thriller.
The game was never going to be a slow one, as Slaz looked for a second win and Newcastle attempted to beat the newcomers. With end to end hockey, it wasn’t long until the first goal was scored. A short corner was cleanly dispatched by Katie Firth. However Newcastle was not going to make it easy, scoring their first within 10 minutes; a fast break was not cleared from the area, allowing the opposition a shot on goal. A few minutes later they followed up with a flowing move, setting up a second shot on goal.
Before the half time whistle went, Slaz netted a second to draw level. Sarah Cooper on her first game back broke through the defence, going one on one with the keeper, to slot home her first of the season.
The second half was far closer, with fewer goals. The defense of both teams tackled harder and pressed further. It appeared as though the home team were in control. But 60 mins in, it was Slaz on the back foot as Newcastle netted their third. With slazenger pressing so hard, it was only a matter of time before the team sank a third. Ailish Henry pressured the defence into an error, allowing her to slot the equaliser home with a smooth reverse stick shot.
Both teams had several chances after this, but it remained this way to the end; the result a fair reflection of the game.
