The first half started steady, as Slazenger found their stride. Huddersfield were tested with several sequences of play, instigated by midfielders Andy Fisher, and Adam Drake. Huddersfield returned in kind, but the momentum rested firmly with the Slazenger squad. Several chances were developed, but some strong defense from the opposition back line denied a clear strike on goal. With some great chances behind them, Slazenger went into the break with increased confidence, though frustrated with inability to convert.
At the opening of the second half, Slazenger came out strong. Aware of the shortcomings in the first half, the team played stronger, and chances came quicker. Tom Stoddart, Phil Midgley, and Steve Johnson all struck close. In the end the pressure paid off, with a deflected strike from Andy Fisher, followed up by defender Mark Kitchen who sealed the deal. Slazenger pressed for the final quarter, but couldn’t capitalize further.
The 3rds can take assurance from a strong performance and well earned 1-0 victory. Hopeful this early momentum can be carried into next weeks home match against Harrogate 4th’s (18th September, 3pm).
