Slazenger gave top of the table side, Newcastle University, a big scare in this league Division 2 clash but were unable to take any points.
After last week’s defeat, Slazenger started nervously, struggling to keep posession and to contain the students’ lively forward line.
The home defence showed some steel with Mike Thornicroft commanding at sweeper, but the Newcastle side continued to press and took the lead from a disputed penalty corner.
Alec Gilsten missed a great chance for the Horbury side to draw level, before the visitors doubled the lead after slow reactions from the defence.
Slazenger made a disasterous start to the second periof conceding another goal from a penalty corner.
But they showed great team spirit and, with Chris Hayton bottling up the Newcastle defence, clawed their way back into the match. Thornicroft flicked in for a penalty and Mark Swinden scored a second at the far post.
The University team hit back almost immediately to restore their lead, but with Simon Chamerlain and Ben Wells strong at back and Paul Wiper and Richard Whawell causing trouble down the flanks, Slazenger gained the initiative.
Mike Shaw added a third after excellent link-up play between Wiper and Thornicroft.
Gilston and Wiper went close to securing a point but Newcastle held out. Slazenger are away to second place Stockton this week
