Report: 28-02-2015 – Ladies 3rd’s (0) vs. (2) York University 2nd’s

February 28, 2015 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers ladies 3’s travelled to York for their match against a university side positioned third in the league. The first half saw a competitive game with both teams evenly matched and hard work in midfield and defence ensured that the young university team did not put themselves on the scoreboard.

A 0-0 scoreline was taken into the second half where both teams continued to battle, despite the fast pace beginning to take its toll.

Unfortunately, Slazengers could not keep York university at bay any longer, with York scoring 2 goals from quick play. Slazengers kept their focus though and did not allow York to capitalise further. Goal keeper Dana Clarke made a number of good saves helping to frustrate the York attack.

Despite being 2 goals down, Slazengers kept the York defence on their toes, creating many an opprtunity to try and pull the game back. Working non stop in midfield, the ball often found it’s way towards the York goal for the Slazengers attack to pounce, however it was not to be Slazenger’s’ day and they were unable to find the finishing touch, with the scoreline finishing 2-0.

Player of the match went to Emily Chason who stood strong in midfield.

The second half continued with exciting end to end play. Slazengers pulled one back when Alice Gasgoigne found the back of the net. Slazengers were desperate for an equaliser, but unfortunately the score remained 2 – 1.

Player of the match was Lily Miles who worked tirelessly in midfield.

Report: 11-10-2014 – Mens 2nd’s (0) vs. (1) York University 2nd’s

October 11, 2014 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers mens 2nd team suffered their 2nd defeat of the season going down 1-0 to a well drilled York Uni outfit. Straight from the off, York set a high press and put Slazengers defence under pressure however the defence held out well and in truth, James Cowden in the Slazengers goal was rarely troubled.

Slazengers tried to play a passing game and in spells did so very well and created space to attack but just lacked that final touch in the York ‘D’. York broke the deadlock just before half time when their attacker lost his man in the ‘D’ to tap into an open goal after a good attack down the right.

The 2nd half saw Slazengers match a much young university side for pace and fitness across the pitch limiting Yorks chances to a couple of speculative shots which were easily defended. However the York defence also held out well although Simon Chamberlain did hit the York crossbar late on.

Matt Green took the man of the match award for Slazengers who will be travel to Scarborough on Saturday looking to get back to winning ways.

Report: 13-11-2011 – Ladies 3rds (3) vs. (5) York University 2nd’s

November 13, 2011 by Slazenger HC

The game was a very fast paced game with Slazenger’s making some great opportunities to score. York had the first push back and Slazenger’s were straight on the ball sure that York would be able to get round the team as easy as they thought. York University managed to break through a gap and scored the first goal of the game. However, this didn’t down hearten the Horbury side and they kept their heads up positive that they could bring back the goal difference.

The response from Slazenger was sqift, with a wide ball to Jess Holland stretching play and giving her the space to carry the ball through the defence and into the D to a waiting Claire Mills who hit the ball to the back of the net.

Within minutes it was York’s turn to retaliate. A strong attacking move from Hananh Field to Nayesha Tejura, set up Julie Bacon for the shot on goal, only to be denied by stick tackling and shoulder barging. Slaz had the initiative and with a short corner given, looked to convert. However, even with discipline problems from the York defence, the opportunity could not be capitalised on. York broke out from the Horbury side’s pressure, scoring another goal.

Slaz found their equaliser through a slick passing move, Mills, setting up Sophie Williams, for a strike on goal. A quick response from the York keeper, stopped the first strike, but Zoe Bacon slipped the ball through the keepers legs, allowing Gemma Whittam to sweep the ball into the net. Goalkeeper Chloe Bates made some fantastic saves but unfortunately York University managedto gain another goal. As the half time whistle went the score was 2 to Slazenger’s and 3 to York Uni.

The second half started well with Hannah Field and Mandy Field making a family duo passing the ball between them but York managed to get the ball and ran towards the goal. It went in. 2 – 4 to York University. Another short was given to the Horbury side. Sophie Williams pushed it out to Jess Holland who smacked it at goal and Sophie Williams managed to get the rebound and sneak it over the line. 3 – 4 to York.

The ball was sent up by York and the Slazenger’s side defence consisting of Nicole, Julie Finch and Many Field all took on the University side. However, as full time got nearer, York Uni had a player dismissed for continually shoulder barging. York was down to ten men. Unfortunately the game ended 5-3 and the University side had won. Player of the match was joint between Hannah Field and Jess Holland.

Report: 22-11-2003 – Mens 2nd’s (1) vs. (4) York University 1st’s

November 22, 2003 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger seconds’ promotion hopes took a knock on Saturday following a hard fought 4-1 home defeat at the hands of York University. The game began at a frantic pace with both sides trying to settle in to their own rhythm. The visitors eventually settled and began to control the game with Slaz’ keeper Tom Peniston making some strong saves before York finally opened the scoring.

This gave Slazenger a much needed wake up call and it was the home side’s turn to control the game. Prolonged pressure paid off with John Sykes hitting home after good work down the left from Andy Foreman.

The second half began much as the first has ended with both sides pressuring but it was the visitors who made the breakthrough.

It became much more physical affair with Slaz’ trying to dominate their younger counterparts, a tactic which backfired after Jonny White received a yellow card for what can only be described as a tap.

The students then began to use their man advantage coupled with their fitness levels to control the game and kill things off with two late goals.

Slazenger will be looking to bounce back next week away to Huddersfield Seconds.

Report: 24-10-1999 – Mens 1st’s (2) vs (1) York University (Cup)

October 24, 1999 by Slazenger HC

Brothers Paul and Jonathan Wiper ensured Slazenger 1st’s progressed to the second round of the county cup as they defeated York University 2-1.

Man of the match Paul Wiper gave them an early lead against their division four hosts, but Uni showed their mettle by putting Slazengers under increasing pressure as the half progressed.

Slazenger came out after the break refreshed and extended their lead through Jonny Wiper, but then decided to sit back and despite a great performance by debutant DJ Brogan the match finished a disappointing 2-1 with Slazenger due to meet Leeds Uni or Tadcaster 1st’s in the next round.
