Report: 21-11-2015 – Mens 4th’s (5) vs. (1) Sheffield Hallam 8th’s

November 21, 2015 by Slazenger HC

2015-11-21 - M4 - Harry_Gunning

Slaz finally had a home game and entertained an experienced Sheffield Hallam side. With captain Danny Croxall sidelined due to injury and acting as coach, the slaz side had a higher amount of experience this week. The first half was very entertaining for spectators as the game was end to end. However no goals were scored in the first half.

The 2nd half started well for slaz as centre midfielder Geoff Birkett took control of the game. Slaz had a range of goals with two penalty flicks from Harry Gunning, a goal from a short corner from Sam Haigh and a breakaway goal from star striker Steve “Seasick” Johnson. This gave Slaz a confirmed victory but Hallam had a consolation goal to deny Dan Alderson a deserved clean sheet.

Next week Slaz have a double weekend away to Hull on Saturday and at home to Lindum on Sunday at 12.30.

Report: 19-09-2015 – Ladies 3rd’s (3) vs. Sheffield Hallam 3rd’s (1)

September 19, 2015 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers ladies 3’s made an impressive start to the season with their first game at home to a promising Sheffield Hallam side. Due to the summer reshuffle of the leagues, Slazengers were entertaining a side who finished last season 2 leagues above.

However they did not allow this to concern them, and they went 1-0 up midway through the first half as a result of quick passing which resulted in forward Karen Woodhead getting her 1st goal after her return from maternity.

Slazengers built the pressure and their lead was extended by Louise Beever when she swept the ball into the back of the goal.

The 2-0 lead was taken into half time and Slazengers began the 2nd half with the same dominance. A strong defence ensured that the visitors had no way through, but an unlucky deflection let Sheffield sneak a goal back. However this did not last long as Slazengers restored the goal difference when player of the match Karen Woodhead scored her second of the game to give Slazengers a much deserved 3-1 win and their first points on the board.

Report: 07-03-2015 – Mens 5th’s (2) vs. (0) Sheffield Hallam 9th’s

March 7, 2015 by Slazenger HC

Another fantastic team performance by Slazengers Mens Development team as they travelled to Sheffield Hallam who were second in the league.

Despite playing some skillful opposition, Slazengers intensity, work rate and team work saw a well deserved 2-0 victory.

Great midfield effort, good defensive work and well taken goals by Dan Cass and Josh Swallow were enough to shock the opposition.

Report: 10-01-2015 – Mens 5th’s (0) vs. (1) Sheffield Hallam 9th’s

January 10, 2015 by Slazenger HC

On a snowy and wintery day Slazengers Development team travelled to Sheffield Hallam HC.

A very close game followed and despite several chances Slazengers were unable to score past a large adult keeper.  On one of the oppositions attacks which was well executed they managed to get their goal.

As Slazenger piled on the pressure and having most of the second half possession and territory we could not find the equaliser.  Very tough conditions, well done team.

Man of Match Sam Haigh.

Report: 25-10-2014 – Mens 2nd’s (2) vs. (5) Sheffield Hallam 5th’s

October 25, 2014 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers mens 2nd team had a double header last weekend, entertaining Sheffield Hallams Mens 5’s on Saturday before travelling to York University mens 2’s on Sunday.

Saturdays game saw Slazengers go down 5-2 to an excellent Sheffield Hallam side. Hallam started brightly and immediately put Slazengers under pressure, playing a high press which Slazengers struggled to bypass. Slazengers were caught on the ball a number of times and found themselves 2-0 down midway through the first half. Slazengers pulled a goal back through Matt Green only for Hallam to add 2 more leaving it 4-1 at halftime. Some harsh words were spoken at half time and Slazengers came out determined to give Hallam more of a game and did exactly that. The 2nd half was a much more even affair with Hallam increasing their lead only for Slazengers to pull another back through Simon Randall after good work from Jack Mumford. Slazenger keeper Tom Murray shared the man of the match award with Matt Green.

Sunday saw Slazengers travel to York University looking to avenge a defeat earlier in the season and in the end, were very disappointed to come away with a 2-2 draw. York played good hockey, passing the ball well and playing a high press but were regularly caught out by Slazengers individual skills and pace in attack. York did take the lead but Slazengers drew level through Jack Mumford following a well worked short corner. Slazengers continued to press and it was left to the York keeper to make some excellent saves and a defender with a top notch goal line clearance to keep it level at the break. The second half saw an even game but with the Slazengers keeper and defence rarely troubled, it was the attack that took centre stage, Ben Graham played in Dan Atkinson who unselfishly squared for Mumford to net his second. As Slazengers looked to play out the game, there was still time for controversy after York were awarded a hotly disputed short corner. From this they scored an even more hotly disputed equalizer and despite numerous protests from the Slazengers defenace, the umpire allowed the goal to stand. Man of the match was shared between Jack Mumford and Tom Pitchforth who was excellent in midfield.

Report: 25-10-2014 – Mens 5th’s (2) vs. (1) Sheffield Hallam 9th’s

October 25, 2014 by Slazenger HC

A very determined and disciplined team performance saw Slazengers Development team beat a skilful and well organised Sheffield Hallam Development team.

Great teamwork was evident throughout and saw Sam Haigh and Josh Swallow score the two goals after good Slazenger build up play. Mattie Chilton (man of the match) had a great work rate and control in the centre of the pitch. Ben Stevenson in defence kept attacks at bay.

A great team win 2-1.

Report: 01-03-2014 – Mens 2nd’s vs. Sheffield Hallam 6th’s

March 1, 2014 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers Mens 2’s welcomed league leaders and promotion favourites Sheffield Hallam Mens 6th team on Saturday and came out with a well deserved 5-2 victory. Hallam would have expected an easier time having comfortably beat Slazengers earlier in the season however is was Slazengers who came out on top.

Slazengers were determined to get off to a good start and were immediately putting Hallam under pressure, allowing them no time on the ball and not letting them settle. Slazengers took the lead when a Ben Graham short corner was turned in by Matt Green. Hallam gradually began playing and were kept out by keeper Tom Murray who made some good saves. Slazengers continued to create chances however and double their lead when Jake Barras fired home from a tight angle. Hallam however weren’t to be denied and quickly pulled one back after a fortunate break and were level just before half time after grabbing their second.

You would have expected Hallam to come out on top in the 2nd half as the momentum was with them but it was Slazengers who kept on the pressure on and soon took the lead. Jack Mumford and Ste Roberts combined on a short corner resulting in Roberts calmly slotting under the keeper. Hallam were beginning to lose their cool with a number of players on both sides getting involved in a verbal battle but it was Slazengers who benefited when Mumford smashed home from the top of the ‘d’. Hallam continued to press but when it broke down in midfield, Graham drove forward and fed Barras to slot home his second leaving Slazengers 5-2 to the good.

The result leaves Slazengers 3rd in the league and still in the hunt for promotion however they will have to rely on results elsewhere going their way. Tom Murray took the man of the match award for some top quality saves.

Report: 18-01-2014 – Mens 1st’s (6) vs. (1) Sheffield Hallam 3rds

January 18, 2014 by Slazenger HC

Slaz were facing a team with three points of them and near the relegation zone, this was a big match to keep clear of the fight for the bottom spots.

Slaz got off to a great start, moving the ball round well and breaking down Sheffield on the right wing with Dan Perry’s speed and ball skills which devastated the Sheffield defence. Dan picked up Man of the Match for his relentless running.

The whole team played well together and attacked and defended as a unit.  The opposition keeper played well and kept may shots out of the goal. Both Isaac Fisher and Robin Brearton had a good game and were not afraid to get stuck into the game and out manoeuvre their counterparts.

Goal scorers were: Richard Tuddneham 4, Dan Perry 1, Edward Richardson 1.

Report: 11-01-2014 – Mens 2nd’s vs. Sheffield Hallam 5th’s

January 11, 2014 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers mens 2nd team shook off the cobwebs after a long Christmas break to come out 6-4 winners against Sheffield Hallam mens 5ths. In reality, there should have been further distance between the teams but a couple of defensive lapses by Slazengers allowed Hallam back into the game.

Ste Roberts opened the scoring for Slazengers with a well timed strike only for Hallam to hit back immediately following a defensive mix up. Slazengers were playing the better hockey and creating more chances and it was Jake Barras who was next on the score sheet, rounding the Hallam keeper before firing in a reverse stick strike from a narrow angle. Again though, Slazengers immediately switched off and Hallam equalised within a minute. There was time for Slazengers to take the lead before the break though when Jack Mumford got on the end of a neat move to slot the ball between the keepers legs.

The 2nd half was much of the same, Slazengers generally playing the better hockey and creating more chances only for Hallam to continue to peg Slaz back. It was the result of a Hallam attack that enabled Slazengers to increase their lead when a fast break through man of the match Matt Stacey resulted in Simon Randall getting on the score sheet. Hallam again pegged Slaz back before Stacey scored one himself getting on the end of Randalls cross for a simple finish. Mumford grabbed his second to increase the lead before Hallam nicked another late on to leave the final score 6-4 in Slazengers favour.
