Report: 28-11-2015 – Ladies 1st’s (0) vs. (5) Driffield 1st’s

November 28, 2015 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers ladies 1’s travelled to a very cold Driffield this weekend. However team spirits were high after a good team performance the previous week.

Driffield made the better start and very quickly sneaked in two goals past the Slazengers keeper. In classic Slazengers style, it took the first ten minutes or so to warm up to match pace. Once the team had, we began to make it extremely difficult for the strong Driffield side. The forwards Helen Hough, Ellie Page and Jessica Rudge did a fantastic job of pressing their defence and forcing errors from the opposition. The second part of the first half solely consisted of Slazengers attacking in the Driffield half. Despite many shots from the forwards and even some attempts from Ailish Hendry, the ball did not want to go in the goal.

In the second half Slazengers did not give up, and the final 5-0 score line did not reflect the ladies performance. Driffield were a strong side but Slazengers more than held their own. Lily Miles had a good debut performance but man of the match went to Sue Hope who had a great game controlling the centre of the pitch.

Report: 14-11-2015 – Mens 4th’s (1) vs. (7) Driffield 3rd’s

November 14, 2015 by Slazenger HC

Slaz had another long trip to Driffield this week with again a young side. The first half was one to forget for the greens as they were losing 4-0 at the break.

After half time Slaz pulled one back through a fortunate strike from Josh Dunstan but it wasn’t enough to create a fightback as Driffield scored 3 more to round off a deserved victory.

Next week Slaz are back at home against Sheffield Hallam 8s.

Report: 04-10-2014 – Ladies 1st’s (5) vs. (1) Driffield 1st’s

October 4, 2014 by Slazenger HC

Newly promoted Driffield travelled over to Slaz with an unbeaten record to date and an experienced team containing at least 4 North Masters players. However they came up against a Slaz side who were determined to come out with something for their absent Captain Kelly Whittam after her inspiring email read out in the changing rooms.

Slaz started well and though the early part of the game was very even, they put Driffield under constant pressure and forcing errors until a strike by Helen Hough was finished by Jessica Rudge to give the home team the lead. After this Slaz seemed to grow in confidence, defending capably, passing the ball around and keeping possession well, resulting in on form striker Jessica Rudge scoring a further two goals to make the half time lead 3-0.

It was pointed out to Slaz by Men’s Club Captain Paul Wiper during the half time team talk that although they were doing well they ‘hadn’t won yet’ and Slaz were mindful of this, setting out in the second half. Some excellent attacking play in midfield by youngsters Hannah Field and Olivia Dovernor enabled Slaz to score another 2 goals. The fourth again by Jessica Rudge and the last goal by newcomer Daisy Gee-Sanders who ‘helped the ball home’ much to the annoyance of the star striker who wanted 5 to her name! The fate of Driffield was sealed, despite the opposition getting a consolation goal they looked no match for the Slaz team
today.

A fantastic team performance with great work in all areas of the pitch and very difficult to single out any player for man of the match!

Next week sees the annual trip to Hull where Slaz will be hoping to maintain the great work rate and team spirit in the next game.

Report: 03-02-2013 – Ladies 1st’s (3) vs. (1) Driffield 1st’s

February 18, 2013 by Slazenger HC

Slaz went in to the second game of the weekend knowing that they could make it mathematically impossible for Driffield to overtake them and make it more likely for their opponents to be relegated. However there was no room for sentiment and as we know from this league, being bottom of the table does not necessarily mean an easy game.

The first goal was not long in coming – the short corner conversion rate was improving and and injector Amy Smeaton scored her first goal for Slaz as Amanda Sowerby drew the defence and passed it back to the far post. Despite Driffield coming back strongly, with some good linking play from their North of England Masters players, Slaz scored from yet another short corner. This time Amanda Sowerby followed up to put the ball in the back of the net. Driffield showed that they were still in the game as they scored to narrow the deficit to 2-1.

The second half was a close fought affair with Driffield putting more pressure on Slaz until youngster Hannah Field calmly slotted the ball past the Driffield keeper (who had an excellent game, denying the Slaz forwards many opportunities). The final score was 3-1 to Slazenger and left them three points closer to safety.

Report: 09-12-2012 – Girls U12’s Tournament

December 19, 2012 by Slazenger HC

GU12 2012-09-30 12.37.53

The 3rd tournament of the season was held last weekend and saw the girls putting in some great performances to finish top of their league.

They were beaten only by Thirsk in a very close match with a final score of 3:2, but in all their other games came out on top.

They will now progress to league D, and hopefully with a higher standard of opposition we will see them up their game even further. Opposition beaten were Pocklington, Driffield, Halifax, Wakefield

Report: 04-11-2012 – Boys U12’s Tournament

November 8, 2012 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger U12 boys continued their good start to the season this weekend with some confident performances,

Slazengers A (1) Leeds A (1)
Slazengers once again seemed to dominate the game and took the lead through a well taken goal from Matthew Chilton, they continued to press and just got caught off guard within the final few minutes to concede a goal against the run off play, this turned out to be a respectable result as the Leeds team went on to win all their other games.

Slazengers A (0) Driffield A (0)
The team played with good movement and ball speed, they were unlucky not to score but the Driffield keeper managed to keep a clean sheet and the Slazenger forwards at bay. Another good performance from the team and everyone worked well as a team.

Slazengers A (0) Bingley A (0)
Much like the previous game Slazenger’s controlled the game an outstanding performance from the Bingley keeper kept Bingley in the game. Again and again the Slazenger attached the Bingley goal but
came away frustrated.

Slazengers A (2) Thirsk B (0)
Slazengers went into the game more relaxed, and it paid off, another goal from Matthew Chilton and one from Joshua Cole put the game out of reach of a good Thirsk side, the Slazenger defence was not pressured and cleared up the loose ball, seeing a comfortable win.

Slazengers A (0) Bradford A (0)
The boys finished with a draw and again unlucky to come away with another win, they pressured the Bradford defence and there was some scrambling defence in the last minute to ensure they came away with a point.

Slazengers u12 B team
The new development team played their first games this weekend, and started off their season in great style,

They lost their first game to Ben Rhydding 2 – 0 but the signs were good as they still tried to push forward and not give in to the pressure of a strong Ben Rhydding side.

They then followed this with a 1-0 win over Chapletown, a 2-1 win over Wakefield D team and a 3-0 win against Wakefield C team, the team got better and better, they all played for each other with some good defensive work and great passing, to say that 4 members of the team made their debuts it was an outstanding result.

The goals came from Daniel Singleton (3) Mollie Gilbert (2) and Katie Minchella.

A very big well done to both teams.

Report: 20-10-2012 – Ladies 1st’s (8) vs. (1) Driffield 1st’s

October 23, 2012 by Slazenger HC

Slaz were very happy to be re-united with the minibus for their trip to Driffield and hoped that they could soon erase last weeks’ disaster from their minds with a convincing win. However the day didn’t start very well due to a flat tyre and the team were delayed in setting off. Fortunately there were no further incidents on the trip apart from a slight scare for Chauffeur Mills (and potentially the rest of the passengers) on the bridge at Howden; but they arrived safely at Driffield.

The late arrival did not seem to disrupt them from their routine of starting strongly, the home team seemed to invite Slaz to attack their ‘D’ and didn’t seem to have any answers to the newly changed formation. Slaz put on lots of pressure and were quickly rewarded with their first goal, subsequently scoring a further two in an excellent first half. Goal scorers were Sarah ,with a brace from Captain Helen Hough (who had only that day been given a revised target to meet this season by Coach Woody). Slaz were playing some great hockey and went into the half time break at a comfortable 3-0.

The half time team talk encouraged Slaz to improve their goal difference and soon after the start of the second half a decent strike from Katie Browne found the back of the net. This was followed quite quickly by player of the match Helen Hough’s hat trick (which she swore was not poached from Amanda Sowerby but was ‘just making sure’). After her goal, the captain soon retreated to the bench to view how the team was playing and observed a further three goals being scored by Hannah Field, Katie Firth and Sarah Hobbs to bag Slaz a creditable 8-1 victory. Thanks go especially to GK Anna Vessey for all her vocal assistance, Hannah Field for her strong first team debut and finally to Driffield for providing the nicest teas in the League. Next week sees a home clash with newly promoted Leeds Ladies who to date are having a very successful season (and have already beaten Dragons).

Report: 14-10-2012 – Boys U10’s Promoted from First Tournament

October 23, 2012 by Slazenger HC

A new season and some new faces but still a side with an average age of 8 took part in the first tournament of the year starting in Division C against some older and more experienced teams. We were due to be third on but due to Driffield waiting for players we went on first and got into our game plan straight away thanks to some pre game warm up and training by Matthew Stacey and Rowan Tejura who were also our Umpires for the day.

Slazenger (1) vs. (0) Doncaster

A first shot at goal from Charlie saw the ball skim the post as Slazenger moved in to attack mode with play moving predominantly in to the Doncaster half. An excellent break through the defence saw Will score with a direct strike. Both teams fought hard to keep the ball but Slazenger conceded few chances and took the first game of the season 1-0.

Slazenger (4) vs. (1) Leeds

Good set pieces and structured play saw Slazenger take an early goal with passes from Will to Charlie, struck home by Lucas. A scramble around the goal area saw Slazenger quickly add to the tally with a second goal by Charlie. Slazenger displayed some excellent control and Will hit a powerful strike to score goal number 3 from almost the top of the D! After a quick exchange, Leeds finally found their feet and were back in control and broke through Slazenger defence and new goalie Luke to score. Alex scored a late goal for Slazenger and the final score was 4-1

Slazenger (0) vs. (2) Driffield

Driffield were a physically bigger and older team although early play was reasonably matched. A lucky break saw Driffield take the lead early in the game, following up with a second minutes later. Slazengers played well, held their own, but struggled to convert any chances. Defence was key in this game, with some excellent challenges from James and Josh, however Slazengers were lucky to hold the final score to 0-2.

Slazenger (4) vs. (0) Huddersfield

Slazengers played some excellent hockey with some great passing, which saw Charlie rewarded with the first goal of the match. Will was in a great position to score goal number two which just glanced the post, but Slazenger were soon rewarded after a short corner saw Lucas hit home. Both teams played an attacking game, but a break in Huddersfield’s defence allowed Charlie to score. Good passing from Will gave Lucas opportunity to score a final goal before the whistle ended the game at 4-0.

Promotion secured to Division B!

Man of the Match – Charlie Bland, Most Improved – Joe Minchella

Report: 03-03-2012 – Ladies 1st’s (3) vs. (3) Driffield 1st’s

March 8, 2012 by Slazenger HC

After the 3-3 draw last week Slaz were looking for a win and repeat of their 4-1 success in the Driffield away fixture earlier this season. Unfortunately due to players being unavailable/injured Slaz only had 11 players from their normal squad and were forced to rely on the goodwill of the 3rd team for the subs bench. Katie, Alex and Hannah are to be congratulated for performing admirably given the step up in the level of hockey they had to face.

The home side again started strongly after some worldly wise words from the injured Amanda Sowerby (definitely not a sapper) and once again were the first on the scoresheet when a strong strike from Sarah Cooper was tipped in (allegedly) by Jessica Rudge.

Slaz continued to attack with a high amount of possession with some superb driving runs by Sarah Hobbs and Driffield’s attempts to attack were thwarted by the defence. Driffield were denied an equaliser as Heather Bates made an excellent save on the line. Slaz then went 2-0 up as Ailish Hendry fired an unstoppable shot from the edge of the D but allowed Driffield to come back and score before the half time break to bring it to 2-1.

The second half started strongly again but Driffield were determined to pull back their defecit and soon narrowed the gap to 2-2. A period of frantic end to end play saw Sarah Cooper put Slaz ahead with 10 minutes to go but unfortunately some minutes later Driffield were awarded a flick.  Goalie Eleanor Townend who was recently selected for England Masters Team, disappointed the opposition by going the right way to make the save. However when play continued, Driffied took advantage of some defensive confusion and levelled the scores once more. Despite Slaz sterling final efforts the game ended 3-3 but the plus side was that this is enough to take Slaz to 6th place in the table. Man of the match was jointly awarded to Claire Mills and Eleanor Townend.

Slaz now look forward to a double header against Roseberry and Newcastle and much welcome the return of Hayley Wood to the line up.

Report: 28-01-2012 – Ladies 2nds (5) vs. (0) Driffield 3rd’s

January 31, 2012 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger Ladies 2nds recieved a boost to their promotion campaign, with a 5-0 victory at Driffield. After an 11-0 victory earlier in the year, the visitors were looking for more of the same.

Slazenger’s dominated play, with extended periods of play within the opposition half forcing Driffield to defend. However, the home side were unable to halt the Slaz attack, with 3 goals netted in the first half. Zoe Bacon opened the scoring, with Daisy Gee-Sanders and Ellie Poskett scoring the second and third in quick succession.

At times Driffield did make an occasional break, but any threat was mopped up by Player of the Match Karen Bates in central defence.

In the second half, Slaz continued to apply pressure, netting two more before the final whistle; Zoe Bacon and Daisy Gee-Sanders securing one apiece to complete a brace for both.

This win puts Slazenger only a point behind second place when they host Huddersfield Dragons next week.
