Report: 07-03-2015 – Mens 3rd’s (2) vs. (2) Leeds Adel 4th’s

March 7, 2015 by Slazenger HC

Mens 3 hosted Leeds Adel, and will be feeling unfortunate to only come away with a single point. The team started strongly, playing fast flowing hockey absent for much of the season, putting Adel on the back foot immediately. Slazenger had the lions share of the posession, though struggled to convert early on. Adel’s keeper kept the visitors in the game with several fine saves especially from midfielders Matt Banks, and Andy Fisher.

It wasnt until striker John Sykes was levelled by the goalkeeper that Slaz notched up the first goal; Andrew Birkett converting a penalty flick, and minutes later converting a cross from Ian Hedges to put Slaz 2 goals up.

Adel fought their way back into the game scoring their first, and if it hadnt been for hard work from the Slazenger defence, the team would have been behind. Matthew Feather, Mark Kitchen and goalkeeper Darren Buttery all had fantastic games. Unfortunately, Slazenger were reduced to 10 men for the last 10 minutes of the game, which Adel ultimately capitaised on, equalising in the dying minutes.

Report: 07-02-2015 – Mens 3rd’s (3) vs. (3) Leeds Adel 5th’s

February 7, 2015 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger mens 3rd’s recorded their first win of the season. After a disrupted season, the team showed form which had been building over the last few weeks.

Leeds attacked quickly in the opening minutes of the game, however Slazenger absorbed the pressure; full backs Dave Gascoigne and Paul Johnson worked cleaned up well.

Slazenger worked themselves into the game, with some hard work across the midfield; Matt Banks, Rob Whawell and Andy Fisher particularly battled hard.

The game was locked at 0-0 at half time, but with Slazenger on the ascendency.

As the second half continued, Ben Jackson played an aerial over the Leeds defence. Ian Hedges picked the ball out of the air and flicked it over the oncoming keeper into the goal.

Leeds fought hard in the dying minutes, with the home team defending all the way to the line, with man of the match Goalie Daz Buttery pulling off some key saves.

Report: 15-02-2014 – Mens 3rd’s (5) vs. (4) Adel 5th’s

February 15, 2014 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger 3’s expected a tough game this weekend after the reverse fixture earlier in the season against Adel, had resulted in a tough, hard fought scoreless draw. The Horbury side weren’t denied a tough match but it was far from scoreless. The home team were 2-1 down within the first ten minutes and this had come after continuous pressure from Slazengers. Quick counter attacks from the opposition resulted in identical goals, with a fierce cross from the right being clinically converted by an unmarked striker on the far post.

Slazengers retained their composure and set about getting back into the game. Tom Pitchforth was strong in the middle of the pitch, working tirelessly and debutant at left half Matthew Feather played with a great deal of composure, despite being on the receiving end of persistent niggling fouls.

Things were to get worse before they got better for the home side when Leeds Adel took a 3-1 lead with another goal for the same centre forward in very similar circumstances. Slazengers immediately took the initiative and began to try and find a way back into the game. Ian Hedges provided that spark when he cooly swept the ball high into the top right of the goal from just inside the area.

Once again however, Slazengers let Leeds regain the initiative when a penalty corner was poorly defended and the opposition scored their fourth goal under keeper Darren Buttery. Slazengers regrouped yet again and despite being slightly wasteful in possession their determination was there for everyone to see when Mark Kitchen scored his second of the day with a well taken penalty corner and when Ian Hedges added his second of the day the scores were level with only a couple of minutes left to play.

It was left to Rob Whawell to score a fortunate winner when a Slazenger attack looked to have broken down and the keeper was expecting to watch the ball harmlessly cross the backline only to see Rob gratefully reverse sweep the ball carefully into an unguarded net. Final score 5-4.

Report: 07-12-2013 – Mens 3rd’s (0) vs. (0) Leeds Adel 5th’s

December 7, 2013 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger 3’s match was away against a tough and resilient Leeds Adel side. In a fast and furious encounter both sides were quick in attack and very resilient in defence. The Horbury side took the early initiative with captain Byron Dean and Ian Hedges linking up well with winger Dan Levitt in attack. They created several attacking opportunities but the opposition always managed to snuff out the danger with numbers in the penalty area and when relied upon the Adel keeper was there to make some good saves. Slazengers throughout the game just couldn’t get a decent strike on goal, either being denied the opportunity or taking too long to get the shot away.
In the other goal, Jack Mumford proved to be an able deputy, marshalling the team well and dealing with the few shots Adel had. His centre halves James Higgins and Mark Kitchen were immense on the day and half backs Simon Taylor and Robin Brearton never stopped working both in their defensive roles and providing attacking options down the flanks.
The Horbury team had to endure lots of pressure both sides of half time but came through this to finish the game in the ascendancy. Alan Perry worked well on the left wing and debutant Tom Pitchforth was man of the match playing in an assured manner in whatever position he was asked to play and was unlucky not to score the winner right at the death.
Final score 0-0.

Report: 08-02-2003 – Ladies 2nd’s (4) vs (1) Adel 4th’s

February 8, 2003 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger Ladies seconds gained a hard earned 4-1 win from their trip to Adel fourths in Yorkshrie League Dividion 6.

Player of the match Claire Mills and Harriet Worth combined in mid-field and their continuous effort was rewarded when Julie Bacon put the finishing touches to an aggressive Slazenger attack.

Julie Finch and Victoria Thornton combined to create the next goal, scored by Finch, but Adel pegged them back as Merchant-Edge came off her line to block a shot, which was knocked home on the rebound. But further goals in the second period for Bacon and Mills ensured it was the Slazenger team who returned home happy.
