Report: 25-02-2012 – Mens 3rd’s (10) vs. (0) Hull University 3rd’s

March 1, 2012 by Slazenger HC

After their close defeat away to Hull University before christmas, the team were looking for a big win to put their promotion efforts back on track. with the squad back to full strength, this was duly delivered with a 10-0 victory over the visitors.

Slazenger had not played a league match for a month, so were a little jittery in the first 5 minutes. However, they quickly settled in and returned to their quick passing style of hockey. It wasnt long before the home team were camped in the opposition half, with defence and keeper under pressure. Under this pressure, it was short order before the first goal went in, with hat-trick hero and man of the match Andrew “Roo” Birkett taking the honours.

With the relief of the first goal, Slaz continued to develop their advantage. Some solid work from the midfielders Andy Fisher and Luke Gueli supplied both wingers and forwards with fast passes.

Continued pressure from Slaz gave away a penalty corner, which was expertly dispatched from the top of the circle by Paul Johnson, putting the team in a strong 2-0 lead.

The team continued to press; flowing passing and fast darting attacks kept the team on the front foot. Three more goals came in the first half; 2 from Steve Johnson, and 1 from Ian Hedges; Slaz 5-0 up.

After the break, the team enjoyed the same advantages as before. With continued pressure, Hull had little in response. Mark Kitchen and Nathan Crowther mopped up and attacks and keeper Ralph Toon having dispatched only a single save.

Slaz scored 5 more; winger Alan Perry picking up 1, Alexander Calderly making a textbook strike into the roof of the net, Ian Hedges picking up a second, and Andy Birkett taking 2 more for his hat trick.

This result keeps Slaz in contention, with a third of the matches left to play.

Scorers: Alan Perry (1), Alexander Calderly (1), Paul Johnson (1), Steve Johnson (2), Ian Hedges (2), Andy Birkett (3)

Report: 25-02-2012 – Mens 4th’s (Dev) (4) vs. (0) Barnsley 2nd’s

March 1, 2012 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger 4’s lost their previous encounter against Barnsley so it was very encouraging that Slazengers started this match with a high tempo and built penetrating attacks from the start. Using both flanks, the home side managed to get behind the Barnsley defence several times before one of these attacks resulted in a goal when Harry Bullock fortuitously managed to reverse hit the ball into the far corner. The keeper was undone by the speed of the shot and was expecting something a little harder than the tame shot that sneaked over the goal line.

Barnsley tried to get back into the game but resolute defending and tight marking throughout the team denied the opposition time on the ball. Aidan Hopkinson enjoyed a titanic struggle against one of the adult players and despite being up ended a couple of times kept on returning back to his defensive duties with renewed vigour. This galvanised the rest of the team to follow his example.

The game ebbed and flowed in midfield but the home team continued to create the better goalscoring opportunities either side of half-time, without increasing the single goal advantage.

The game turned in the space of ten minutes in the second half when Barnsley conceded 3 goals in quick succession.
Two goals were very similar with Ian Hedges and Matthew Stacey on either wing putting good crosses at pace into the goalmouth and the third came from a penalty corner.

The scorers were Tim Hunter, Aidan Hopkinson and Harry added to his earlier conversion.

Final score was 4-0 to the home side and just to mention Dave Gascoigne, at left half, making his league debut for the team who sufficiently gained in confidence in the second half to go on a skillful run down the wing in front of an appreciative crowd.

Slazenger 4’s next fixture is away at Airedale.

Report: 25-02-2012 – Ladies 1st’s (3) vs. (3) Newcastle 1st’s

February 28, 2012 by Slazenger HC

Having battered Newcastle Ladies 10-0 away, Slaz were hoping for similar success in their first year in the Northern League Div 2 (east). However, this time it was not going to be as easy, with a fast paced game ultimately ending 3-3.

With the squad back to full strength, Slaz started off well; looking to put last weeks loss to rest.

The team took control of the game, with an early opening goal from Captain Helen Hough. This was followed up by Jessica Rudge. However, Newcastle were not going to let the home team have it their way, and fought their way back into the game, controlling the ball and slotting home their first.

At the back, Man of the Match Sarah Hobbs drove well into space, and creating some excellent distribution. Alongside Donna Simpson, Kelly Whittam and Heather Bates, Slaz formed a strong defence, stifling the opposition attack.

After the break, Newcastle put a second in, against the run of play, though appeared to pick up momentum. Slaz had several attacking shots on goal by Jessica Rudge and Sarah Cooper, but struggled to score a third. Newcastle continued to be dangerous and picked up their third, taking the lead.

Slaz continued to fight, and scored a third to equalise; Jessica Rudge getting the brace.

Special mention goes to Claire Mills for picking up her first green card for aparently pushing the opposition. No-body saw it, and she was truly gutted; and resulting in her picking up “tart of the match”!

Report: 25-02-2012 – Ladies 2nds (3) vs. (3) Horsforth 1st’s

February 28, 2012 by Slazenger HC

Saturday’s game was a very important fixture as it was between the top two teams in Division 4: Horsforth 1 at top of the table and Slazenger 2s in 2nd, with this in mind Slazengers was determined to play hard.

Play was fast paced throughout with breaks from both teams, Zoe Bacon created the first goal opportunity in the form of a penalty flick, due to a shot stopped on the line by a defenders foot, Sue Hope calmly executed the flick putting Slazengers in the lead.

Slazengers continued to make some excellent runs from cleared defensive balls but Horsforth then increased the pressure and scored 2 goals before half time.

With some tactical positional changes instigated at half time by captain Nerys Rollinson, Slazengers restarted the second half with a better formation and more able to prevent Horsforth from attacking down the centre.

Daisy Gee-Sanders, Millie Crowther and Elle Poskett did some fantastic runs and worked really well together up front which lead to an equaliser by Daisy. With continual supporting play from Stacey Binns and Lisa Minchella, Elle Poskett secured goal number 3 for Slazengers making the score 3 – 2.

Unfortunately even with some fantastic saves by Lisa Chappell and exceptionally solid defending by Julie Finch, Karen Bates and Lauren Carruthers, Horsforth managed to sneak in an equaliser before the final whistle, leaving the score at 3 – 3.

Newsletter No 4 – February 2012

Summer Solstice 2012

The return of the Solstice Tournament last year, after 10 years away was a great success; over a dozen teams from all over the country competed for the Stonehenge trophies with the men’s league being won by Bexley Heath (London) and the Ladies by Slaz.

The event raised the profile of the club nationally and made a significant contribution to the Astro replacement fund. So we’re doing it again! (Photos of last years tour can be found here).

Big Day Band

As per last year, Slaz will only be entering one men’s and one ladies team – chosen by the first team captains.

However this is a club event, so if you’re not playing, please do still get involved; come down and support the teams and enjoy the weekend; especially Saturday night. If it is anything like last year, it will be unforgettable, especially with the return of the Big Day band!

Finally, if you are interested in helping out with the organisation or on the day, then see Mat Birkett, or drop him an email

End of Season Awards Dinner

To follow what currently looks like a great season with both the Ladies 2’s and Men’s 1’s in promotion places, the End of Season Awards Dinner location and date has been finalised.

The evening will be held on Saturday the 12th of May and will this year be held at the Holiday Inn on the junction of Queens Drive and Wakefield Rd, Ossett (Nr the M1 J40).

As usual tickets in advance only please, Adults £25, Students/U18’s £20, available from Mat, Hayles, or behind the bar.

This is open to any senior section player, not just Over 18’s!

In the coming months, there will be some major changes with the social club. The club will be changing its name (though no effect to the hockey clubs’ name) and will be making more of an effort to keep everyone informed of what is going on.

Results Roundup

With the snow and ice earlier this month, there has been less than the usual amount of games played. The mens 1st’s continue to fly high in Div 2, with some big wins keeping them in second place, though with chasing teams having games in hand. Men’s 2nd’s continue to have mixed success, after some tough games to start the year. The men’s 3’s have had some success between cancelled games, with some decisive wins still keeping them in the promotion hunt. Success for the development team continues to keep them high in the league.

In the Ladies section, there has also been mixed success. The Ladies 1sts sit mid table in North Div 2 (East), celebrating after 2 wins on the bounce, only to then lose against Rotherham. Ladies 2nds have returned to the 2nd spot in the league with some strong performances especially the 3-0 win over Leeds and 5-0 victory over Driffield. The Ladies 3rd’s have continued a good run of form, contesting well with some of the stronger league oppositions.

The Junior calendar has been the most effected by bad weather, with only a couple of tournaments being played. The boys U10’s continue to impress, though may have met their match this season. With the young team coming up against opposition at the top of their age group, the team were only able to manage draws.

Bys U12’s also had some mixed success, though securing their position on Pitch C – to which they had been promoted the tournament before.
