Match Report
Slazenger 4s travelled to Sheffield 7s at Abbeydale Sports Club this weekend. Sheffield 7s started the first half brightly, being a constant threat to the Slaz D but decent defensive efforts and some good keeping from Darren Saxton kept us even.
After weathering the storm, Slaz gradually asserted themselves more and the match was evenly fought. At around the 20 minute mark, Sheffield scored a well worked goal, somewhat against the run of play.
Good hockey from both sides meant both teams had good chances to score. Stand-in skipper Karl Ashford made two goal line pick saves to keep the score at 1-0 and strong running in midfield from Andrew Fisher, Alan Perry, Chris Tattersall and Paul Chilton and good link up play with the forwards meant Slaz were becoming an increasing threat on goal.
The Sheffield keeper made some decent saves and Fish was unlucky to be not awarded a clear goal just before half timeโฆ..meaning Slaz were unlucky to head in to the break behind.
Slaz started the second half strongly. Passing accuracy and movement improved, and we became the better side for much of the half.
Andy Birkett scored a well deserved equaliser from a short corner, and excellent work in midfield released John Sykes to score the goal that ultimately led to the 4s first win of the season.
The match was played in good spirits by both sides. Slaz team all performed well but Iโd like to specifically mention Harry Cottrell for some really strong defensive work and Chris for good work on the right wing.
Captaincy baton now gratefully handed back over to Fluffyโฆ.

Slaz faced a tough challenge as they hosted the promotion chasing Sheffield Hallam. Slaz were under a barrage of pressure in the first 10 minutes as Hallam managed to get the ball in the Slaz circle in numerous times but were unable to convert. Slaz were then able to counter attack and managed to create a few good opportunities through Peter Gunning and Steve Johnson. However, neither team could take that pivotal chance and it was 0-0 at half time.
In the second half Slaz knew they were right in the game and looked to score first in the opening minutes. However after many end to end chances, it was the away side who managed to open the scoring through a great strike from the top of the circle. Slaz looked to get one back but pushing forward left the exposed at the back and Hallam put the game to bed with a second goal. The game finished 2-0.
Slaz were very happy with a solid performance which arguably didn't justify the result. Man of the match went to Dene Minichella for his great work in midfield.

Slaz went up against a tricky Sheffield Hallam side who were on top from the first whistle. Slaz defended well but eventually conceded and went 1-0 down at half time. In the second half Slaz started to push forward more and looked for an equaliser but this let to their downfall at the back as Hallam scored 3 more to finish as winners. Man of the match goes to Dan Cass who provided some good play through midfield.
