Match Report
Slazenger’s men’s 4th team played away at rivals Wakefield against their 5th team.
The attitude was a positive one and with new young blood in the side to play along with the older heads the team seemed balanced.
The first half saw some very good team work and passing by Slazenger’s players and they attacked for most of the first half only being caught out in the break a few times by Wakefield.
Young Matt Smith almost scored in the first half but the keeper managed to get a leg to it for it to be rebounded out.
Lucas Smith (who wasn't feeling well and made sure his team knew it) still battled away in his midfield position and managed to hold his own against some bigger and older opponents.
Young Isaac Burrows and Tommy Randle played very well on the wing when required which isn’t their usual position and showed great maturity in their passing.
Defensively Joe Minchella played one of his best games of the season and played out of his skin.
The first half ended 0-0 however Slazenger’s should have been in the lead.
Second half was a great battle between the two rival sides, but despite the rivalry it remained sporting and clean.
The game in the second half saw Slazenger’s attacking for the vast majority of it and the team were fired up desperately trying to get that win they deserved.
Unfortunately though Wakefield caught them off guard from an attack and they put it in the net making it 1-0 with 15 minutes left.
Slazenger’s hammered the Wakefield midfield and defence for the entirety but the goal remained elusive!
Final score 1-0 but this by no means reflected their performance or the game.
A victory as a team playing well and being unlucky was taken away.
Man of the match was Joe Minchella who as stated played some of his best hockey to date!!
Match Report
Sunday saw Slazenger Mens 4th's taking on Wakefield 5th's in the second round of the cup. The home team looked the underdogs going into the game, with Wakefield placed high in the division above. The game was a lot closer affair, with a possession well split between the two teams. It was Slazenger who appeared to have the upper hand, with some strong possession and attacking moves, especially as the game progressed. The home side had most of the shorts on goal, but the Wakefield Goalkeeper kept the visitors in the game.
Going into the second half, the teams were locked at 0-0; limited attacks from Wakefield were seen off by full-backs Dave Gascoigne and Tony Walker, while at the other end, the Slazenger attack were unable to find a way past the keeper. Wakefield took the lead against the run of play, a quick attacking move taking the Slazenger defence off guard, slotting the goal away. This galvanised Slaz, who were awarded a series of short corners, from which Andy Birkett equalised. Wakefield fought back into the game, scoring a second close to the end of the game, pushing Slaz to equalise in the last minutes of the game to take it to extra time.
Extra time passed off without a winner, forcing the game to be resolved on penalties. Slaz took the win on penalties, Roberts netted the first, while Wakefield hit the crossbar. Birkett netted his second and keeper Giles Field saved Wakefield's response. Slazenger missed their third, allowing Wakefield into the game. However a successful flick from Jake Barras, left it to Under 16 Harry Gunning to coolly slot away the final penalty.

Visitors Wakefield fifths were out-played by Slazenger's fourth string. The Horbury men romped to an 8-2 derby success.
Scorers for the home side were man of the match Paul Wiper (4), James Swinden (2), Steve Wood and Hector Buckley. Wakefield replied with a goal in each half .
Match Report
Slazenger’s fourth string suffered the same fate as the club’s thirds team – a 2:1 reversal to Wakefield at College Grove.
Slazenger slick early passing created many chances, all wasted before Dave Smyth finally powered the ball into the back of the net.
The visitors sat back on their lead, however, and Wakefield were quick to pounce for the equaliser.
And after the break, Slazenger had to work incredibly hard to keep the ball out of the net. Defenders John Saville and Phil Ventom stood firm against wave upon wave of Wakefield attacks but eventually Slazenger succumbed to the inevitable winner.
