THE CASE OF THE MISSING GOAL

Slazenger 3s 1–0 Harrogate 4s
Location: Slazenger HQ
Status: CASE CLOSED

THE INCIDENT
Police were called to Slazenger HQ following reports of a highly suspicious incident involving a hockey ball, two teams and an alarming lack of goals. At approximately 11:30, Harrogate 4s arrived expecting to leave with a result. Instead, they became the victims of a carefully executed Slazenger defensive operation. The decisive incident occurred in the first half. John was identified as the key accomplice, supplying the evidence that allowed Aleks to commit the offence. Aleks finished clinically to put Slazenger 1–0 up. And then… Slazenger locked the doors.

THE COVER-UP
With the lead secured, Slazenger spent the remainder of the match desperately attempting to conceal the evidence. Harrogate launched attack after attack, but every time they got close, Sammy was there. Save after save. Stop after stop. Intervention after intervention. Sammy produced a performance that left investigators with no alternative but to award him Man of the Match. In front of him, Josh and Simon formed an extremely solid partnership at centre back, helping keep Harrogate’s attackers under constant surveillance. Jez, Simon and Will put forward strong cases for Man of the Match, but Sammy’s countless brilliant saves ultimately made him the obvious suspect.

FURTHER OFFENCES
The Slazenger operation wasn’t entirely clean. Scott and Tim were both caught (within 10 seconds of each other) in possession of green cards, earning themselves temporary removal from the scene. Despite these minor incidents, Slazenger refused to crack. The entire squad worked relentlessly to protect their one-goal advantage. Every tackle mattered. Every clearance mattered. Every save mattered. And most importantly, the lead survived.

THE CLEAN-SHEET SERIAL KILLERS
When the final whistle sounded, the evidence was undeniable:
Harrogate (0) Slazenger (1)

Sammy had kept another clean sheet, making this Slazenger’s second consecutive clean sheet. The defensive unit had successfully disposed of every Harrogate attack and left absolutely no evidence behind.

MOTM - SAMMY — Goalkeeper; Countless saves. One clean sheet. A thoroughly suspicious performance.

DOTD - There was, however, one major development during the post-match investigation. Dan was questioned about Slazenger’s clean sheet and offered the following defence: “We didn’t keep a clean sheet, we got carded.” Investigators immediately determined that this was, in fact, an exceptionally stupid statement.

Match Report

The sun hung low over Slazenger like a dusty frontier town waiting for trouble. The wind rolled across the pitch like a tumbleweed, and the Slazenger 3s stood ready on the wooden porch… sticks in hand, eyes narrowed toward the visitors riding in from Harrogate.

Sheriff Sammy took his place between the posts, calm as a gunslinger who’d seen every trick in the book. In front of him stood the town’s defensive line: Simon, Trevor, Josh, and Dodge — four hard men guarding the border like a line of iron-clad deputies.

In the midfield saloon roamed Jez, Jack, and Aidy, stirring the dust and looking to deal trouble to anyone who crossed their path. Out on the wide prairie, Will, Scott, and Seth patrolled the wings, ready to ride down the flanks. And leading the charge up front were the outlaws Tim and Ryan, waiting for their moment to draw.

It didn’t take long.

Five minutes in, the sound of the first shot rang out across the valley. A slick move up the field saw the ball roll kindly to Ryan, who stepped forward like a man drawing from the holster. Crack. The strike flew past the Harrogate keeper and into the back of the net.

1–0 Slazenger.

The home crowd roared like a frontier bar on payday. Slazenger had struck first.

But Harrogate weren’t the sort to ride quietly out of town.

They regrouped, circled back, and began pressing harder. The Slaz defence held firm for long spells — Simon, Trevor, Josh, and Dodge throwing themselves into tackles like men diving behind cover in a shootout. Behind them, Sammy stood tall in goal, pulling off save after save, batting shots away with the cool nerve of a veteran gunman.

Still, the visitors eventually found their opening and levelled the score before the break.

The second half turned into a dusty duel. Midfield battles raged, with Jez, Jack, and Aidy scrapping for every inch of territory while the wingers kept galloping down the flanks looking for another opening.

But Harrogate’s guns kept firing. Two more strikes found their mark despite heroic resistance from the Slaz back line and more acrobatic stops from Sammy.

When the final whistle blew, the scoreboard read:

Slazenger 3s 1 – 3 Harrogate 4s

Defeat on the day, but not without grit, dust, and a fair few heroic stands.

And when the dust settled, there was no doubt about the day’s top gunslinger. With a string of outstanding saves that kept Slazenger in the fight far longer than the scoreline suggests, Man of the Match rode off into the sunset: Seth.

The result may not have gone Slazenger’s way, but the town will ride again next week.

Match Report

The Men’s 3rd Team slipped to a 5–1 defeat at the weekend, though the performance was far better than the scoreline suggests. Slazenger 3rds, the visiting side, were made to work throughout, and the match was competitive for long spells.

Our goal came from Damian Greig, who reacted quickest during a scramble in the D to finish well. The team enjoyed a strong period after that, creating several good chances and moving the ball with confidence.

A clear highlight was the debut of Sammy Parkin, who earned Man of the Match for an excellent display in goal. He made a number of important saves and showed great composure despite constant pressure.

While Harrogate proved more clinical, there were plenty of positives to take forward. A tough result, but an encouraging effort from the squad.

Match Report

The mighty threes returned to action this weekend, welcoming Harrogate, who Slaz had beaten 4-1 in the first outing. A crisp January Saturday set the scene as Slazenger look to climb up the table. The game started as if there was no festive break for Slaz. Sharp passing between all 11 players led to a few good chances early on for Slaz, but nothing came from them. Harrogate grew into the game, winning the first short corner (controversially), but making nothing of it. Slaz won their first short corner nearly 20 minutes in, but timed it out, waiting too long to take it! However, soon came another short, and with it Slazenger’s first goal of the afternoon, the ball bundled in off the keeper following consecutive shots. Slaz piled on the pressure, winning more shorts and having more shots. Scott made it two after rebounding a strike from a short corner with eight minutes of the first half to play. Harrogate seemed to drop deeper and deeper, soaking up the Slaz attacks, yet no more goals were to be scored before the break. HT 2-0 Slaz

Following half time, Slazenger relentlessly attacked, and Damo made it three with a calm finish from yet another short corner. The heavy pressure seemed to work, a brilliant strike near the top of the D from Connor made it four to the good. The younger Slazenger attack buzzed around an aged Harrogate defence, and continued their mission to score. A great bit of hockey led to the fifth, Connor with a strong drive, laying it calmly to Owen, who dispatched it across D to Aleks, who slotted it round the keeper with complete composure. Slaz outclassed Harrogate in all aspects of the game, controlling the ball across midfield, defending well, and being nuisances in the attack. Against the run of play, Harrogate managed to win and convert a penalty flick, pulling one back with 10 to go, however there was no late comeback, and a great, marauding run down the right from Simon led to a classy goal for Scott in the middle of the D. Slaz saw the game out, and in the end, were the much better team overall. FT 6-1 Slaz.

Match Report

Slazenger started strong, holding the ball well, using each other and moving well. Good passing plays led to an opener by Trev, put away 10 minutes in. We continued to push, getting more and more confident as the game went on, dominating in all areas of the pitch. Jimmy scored the second midway through the half. One midfielder clearly was trying to start the Harrogate comeback, but our strong defensive line cut everything out ruthlessly. The Harrogate keeper also made some brilliant saves, keeping his team in it. A strong use of substitutes kept the press on for Slaz for the rest of the half. 2-0 Slaz halftime.

The second half continued with more of the same. High pressure, chance after chance. James bombed down the wing with purpose, and a few back to back short corners led to Scott scoring our third of the game. A smart dribble and lovely end product led to a great solo goal by Fin, slotting it past the keeper to make it 4. Harrogate managed to score a consolation goal near the end, and the multiple Slaz chances couldn’t quite lead to a goal, again with their keeper making some great saves. Overall, it was a very positive result from Slazenger, who seem to be growing as a team at each passing game. Full time 4-1 to Slaz.

Match Report

Early jitters gave way to a commanding performance by the third string that gained them a comprehensive opening day victory.

Slazenger were grateful to the work of defender Tony Sidwell and goalkeeper Thomas Peniston in those nervy stages. John Sykes scored against the run of play from a short corner to set Slazenger or their way. And a second short corner goal from Graham Parker knocked some of the string out of the visitors.

Injuries forced Slazenger to change things around in the second half, but it seemed to work in their favour as they scored twice more through Sykes and skipper Geoff Birkett. Lawrence Thornton had a fine debut game before being injured and Neil Hutchins also impressed. But man of the match honours went to Tony Sidwell for a faultless display at sweeper. The thirds travel to Bradford on Saturday 3:15pm start.

Match Report

In a ding-dong match, Slaz’ came out victors with a cleverly deflected goal from Gavin Kay in the last few minutes. There never more than one goal in it with Slaz’ opening the scoring with a short corner strike from skipper Geoff Birkett.

After a reply from Harrogate, Martin Lofthouse put Slaz’ back in front with a flick into the corner of the net from another short corner routine - only for Harrogate to hit back again.

Ian Wiper repeated the sequence again with a delightful flick over the keeper. Harrogate then scored twice to go in front for the first time in the match, but Andy Auty set up Richard Whawell for the equaliser and then Gavin Kay's winner sealed it for Slaz'.

Match Report

Slazenger thirds eventually ran out comfortable 4-0 winners over Harrogate’s fourth string. But they didn't achieve their goal without having to dig deep in an energy-sapping contest.

Young goalkeeper Thomas Panistone pulled off some fine saves to keep Slazenger in the game early on. Slazenger got on top in the last 15 minutes and scored goals through Richard Tuddenham, the impressive Richard Whawell and man of the match Paul Wiper (2).

Harrogate scored their late consolation goal off a penalty flick. On Saturday, Slazenger thirds travel to Bradford.
