Match Report

A Roaring Performance at the Slazenger Zoo!

The gates swung open at Slazenger Zoo as Leeds 7s arrived for what they hoped would be a pleasant afternoon out. Unfortunately for the visitors, they had wandered into the predators’ enclosure, and Slazenger 3s were hungry for goals. The first attack came just two minutes into the match, when Tim Carr delivered an inch-perfect hit from the sideline, finding Aleks in full stride. Aleks kept his composure one-on-one with the keeper and calmly slotted the ball home. A beautiful bit of hunting from the Slazenger pack.

For the next twenty minutes, the visitors managed to keep the cages locked, but eventually the Slazenger attack struck again. Aleks, having wandered out wide, produced a beautiful pass for Ryan Bishop, who slapped the ball home with the sort of precision normally reserved for a crocodile snapping up its lunch. Leeds briefly fought back, scoring five minutes later to make it 2–1 and suggesting they might have a little bite of their own. However, the Slazenger animals were far from ready to retreat.

A short corner provided the next feeding opportunity. Scott unleashed a strike that was saved, but John was lurking in the perfect position to gobble up the rebound and restore Slazenger’s two-goal advantage. Then came a moment of midfield predation. Scott hunted down the ball, won it back aggressively and charged forward before releasing Tim through on goal. Tim made no mistake, effortlessly slipping the ball past the keeper to make it 4–1 at half-time.

The Leeds defence was beginning to look like a group of meerkats watching a lion approach. After the break, Slazenger wasted little time adding to the tally. Five minutes into the second half, Aleks was played through by Jack and calmly finished for his second of the afternoon, taking him to an impressive nine goals for the season. The Slazenger top predator was clearly enjoying his enclosure.

Ten minutes later, Josh joined the feeding frenzy. From a short corner, Tim Carr provided the perfect push-out, allowing Josh to unleash a clean strike from the top of the D. The ball flew into the net, leaving the Leeds keeper with about as much chance as a penguin trying to escape a polar bear. Just two minutes later, Slazenger completed the day’s scoring. Aleks turned provider once more, delivering the final ball for Bish to score his second of the match. Seven goals, six different moments of attacking brilliance, and Leeds were firmly back behind the glass.

The final whistle confirmed a 7–1 victory, with Slazenger producing a performance that had the home supporters roaring.

🦍 Man of the Match: Tim - Tim took home the award after an outstanding all-round performance. His inch-perfect assist for Aleks, perfectly delivered short-corner push-out for Josh, and relentless work throughout the match made him the zookeeper of the day. He controlled the feeding schedule from start to finish.

📈 The winning streak continues! - Slazenger have now won five consecutive games, scoring an incredible 25 goals and conceding just 5 across that run. The attack is thriving, the defence is keeping the animals contained, and the opposition are leaving the zoo with very little to celebrate.

Match Report

Slazenger's third team went into the game against Leeds still looking for their first win of the season. Leeds were the better team starting off going 2-0 up within 10 minutes due to sloppy marking. Slaz then pulled one back a few minutes later through a goal from MaxGodley following a short corner. However Leeds then continued to use their pace up top and then made it 3-1. About 10 minutes before half time Slaz reduced the deficit back to 1 as Dave Gascoigne scored a hit from a short corner. Just before the break Leeds scored another.

Despite being down 4-2 at half time slaz were still feeling positive and thought that they could get back in to it. This showed as Jack Lee scored early on with a nice slap into the bottom corner. The thirds were pushing hard to equalise and then they did through a second Godley goal following another short corner. Tensions then got high as both teams were pushing for the winner and many cards were handed out. With less than a minute to go Leeds scored the winner following a missed stick tackle from the umpire. The reaction from the opposition showed how hard they had to work. Hopefully Slaz can improve on the result and take all three points next week. MOM Godley.

Match Report

Slazenger’s 3s hosted Top of league Leeds 7s on cold Saturday afternoon. Leeds coming out strong straight from the whistle, pressuring the Slazenger’s defence causing them to panic and give away a penalty corner which Leeds securely converted banging the goal in the bottom right hand corner. In the second half the Tim Carr scored with a top corner screamer, bringing it back to 1-1. Leeds was pushing for this victory which they thought they would easily get but however the man of the match, star keeper Harry Buttery pulled off some world class saves, insuring they claimed one point from the game as tough game as everyone knew it was going to be. The game resulted into a draw at 1-1

Match Report

Decimated by injuries and languishing low in the table, Slazenger 3rds knew they would be in for a tough game against Leeds.

Starting strong, Slazenger pushed forward in numbers, setting the pace. Despite his near career-ending tap on the knee two weeks ago, Matt Banks, ably assisted by Andy Fisher, controlled the game through midfield. Slazenger had their chances but couldn’t quite find the back of the net, Tim Carr’s looping shot denied by the woodwork.

Despite Slazenger controlling much of the half, Leeds were first to strike, slotting the ball home just before half time.

After a Churchillian half time talk from captain and Man of the Match, Simon Taylor, Slazenger came out in force. Fearless attacks from Alan Perry and Jack Lee creating chance after chance for the Slazenger attack. Their persistence finally paying off with Tim Carr thumping the ball home to even the scores. By this point Slazenger could smell the points, and piled on the pressure, taking the lead a few minutes later when Scott Carruthers drilled the ball across the line.

This woke Leeds up and they attacked in numbers trickling the ball over the line to even the scores once more.

The points were up for grabs, and it was down to who wanted it most. Slazenger continued to control the game across the pitch. Fantastic defence from Simon Taylor and debutant Josh Swallow squashing attack after attack from Leeds. At the other end of the pitch Sam Haigh finally thundered the ball home to re-take the lead for Slazenger. Leeds were running short on time and despite a flurry of late chances, Harry Buttery managed to keep Slazenger safe in the dying minutes of the match (ner ner ne ner nerrrrr!)

Match Report

Slazenger 3rds travelled to Leeds in a top of the table clash. Already weakened by injury, Slazenger knew that this game could decide the league champions, but having already beaten them at home, knew they were in for a good game.

Slazenger came out strongly from the start, maintaining possession with Paul Johnson and Matt Banks expertly holding the team together from midfield. Powering forwards, Slazenger were not without goal scoring chances, but the strong Leeds defence seemed almost impenetrable having only conceded only six goals this season. Both sides were evenly matched and neither team was able to find the back of the net, leaving the half time score 0-0.

After a rousing, inspirational, Churchill-esque team talk from Captain and man of the match Simon Taylor, Slazenger came out strong in the second half. Tireless running from Sam Haigh and veteran Tim Carr offered more opportunities, but Slazenger were unable to take full advantage. Finally it was Leeds who were able to break the deadlock, converting a short corner chance to take the lead 1-0. Rather than letting heads go down, Slazenger were spurred on. Minutes later a short corner was converted, after Josh Dunstan's flick was deflected in at the back post by a Leeds defender.

Both teams could now smell victory, but the defensive lines held strong. A back post opportunity was thwarted by Keeper Harry Buttery in the dying moments of the game to leave the final scores all level at 1-1.

Match Report

Slazenger 3 face Leeds In the semi final of the league cup. Leeds started of strong, and took advantage of an early brake away to put it past the keeper. However, keeper Harry Buttery continued to have an excellent game, keeping out several chances.

Slaz came out after half time with renewed vigour, pressing the Leeds defence. The pressure gave Slaz the opportunity and Brian Johnson scored his first competitive goal in the scramble. However, another defensive lapse resulted in Leeds netting a second with minutes remaining in the game; a goal Slaz didn't have time to come back from.

Match Report

Slazenger mens 3rd's recorded their first win of the season. After a disrupted season, the team showed form which had been building over the last few weeks.

Leeds attacked quickly in the opening minutes of the game, however Slazenger absorbed the pressure; full backs Dave Gascoigne and Paul Johnson worked cleaned up well.

Slazenger worked themselves into the game, with some hard work across the midfield; Matt Banks, Rob Whawell and Andy Fisher particularly battled hard.

The game was locked at 0-0 at half time, but with Slazenger on the ascendency.

As the second half continued, Ben Jackson played an aerial over the Leeds defence. Ian Hedges picked the ball out of the air and flicked it over the oncoming keeper into the goal.

Leeds fought hard in the dying minutes, with the home team defending all the way to the line, with man of the match Goalie Daz Buttery pulling off some key saves.

Match Report

Slazenger 3’s went into the weekends match, anticipating a tough encounter and knowing that a win would be a boon to their promotion campaign; The previous (away) leg had resulted in a goalless draw.

Slaz started jittery though at pace; fielding their usual formation, with the addition of newcomer Dave Gascoigne, the team looked stable and in control. The Horbury team attacked quickly, and put pressure on the Leeds back line. However, the curse of the 3rds continued, being unable to convert to a goal.

However, this time it was going to be different; a well worked move from the Slaz midfield set up Andy Birkett; flicking the ball towards the keeper, to be plucked out of the air and into the net by Steve “sea-sick” Johnson. After conferring by the umpires, the goal was awarded; putting Slaz ahead. Leeds were a well drilled side, and broke fast when given the opportunity. The team took advantage of this, unfortunately beating keeper Ralph Toon; who otherwise had pulled off some impressive save.

The second half was much more one-sided. The home site consolidated; and reduced the frantic speed at which they had been playing. The ball flowed better and attacking play improved. Slaz piled on the pressure; passing more, and making better use of a strong midfield, scoring a further 4 goals to put the game beyond doubt. The second came from a well timed aerial ball, picked out of the air by Andy “Roo” Birkett.

Johnson wrapped up a further 3 goals; a tap-in past the keeper, a finish (or is that poached?) from a shot by Ian Hedges and from a top of the “D” shot by Ste Roberts.

Honourable mention should go to left-half Dave Gascoigne, who put in an impressive performance for his first outing with the 3rd team.

With 2nd place Brigg loosing at the weekend, Slaz now sit in 3rd place; 2 games in hand, 5 points adrift with 4 games of the season remaining. Promotion is now in the teams’ hands.

Match Report

A weakened Slazenger 3rd team struggled against visitors Leeds, starting slowly and never really picking up the pace during the first half. Their cause wasn’t helped when Steve Johnson had to leave the field, injured by one of his own team mates. Despite a lot of effort, the home team could not get hold off the ball and consequently failed to have any decent possession.

The home side were lucky to be only 1-0 down at half-time. The second half started a little better, with debutant and man of the match Rowan Tejura, showing his more experienced colleagues how to play. Slazenger started to string some passes together and enjoyed the better possession for a while. It was during this period that Lee Secker equalised with a well taken reverse hit into the bottom corner. However, the good work was undone when Leeds equalised within a couple of minutes. Once again Slazenger were on the back foot and conceded another couple of goals before the end of the game. Final score 4-1 to the visitors.
