Match Report

It was the final game before Christmas. Slaz had been playing some of their best hockey in recent games and were looking to put last weeks defeat to rest.

Slaz started a lot more tentatively this week, and took some time to jet into the game. The first 10 minutes had flashes of the old team, rushed passes, forced long balls and invited pressure into themselves. However as time went on, they settled into playing better, structured hockey. With the more structured hockey came more scoring opportunities. Ben Jackson created the first, beating the defence with a mazy run, squaring the ball to Ian Hedges, who tapped it in at the back post. Slaz settled, and with some composed midfield work led by man of the match captain Ste Roberts, the team looked more organised going into the break 1-0 ahead.

In the second half the team looked leaner and keener; moving the ball around with more pace and intent. This was awarded with a string of attacking opportunities, including a short corner. Up stepped Adam "The Torpedo" Drake, who coolly dispatched the short with a well taken strike into the bottom corner. Ben Jackson had spent a good part of the game warming up the goalkeeper with his gentle shots, but the second half was different This time, finishing another trademark blistering run with a clean strike, to make it 3-0.

Lindum were not going to roll over like a Christmas Turkey, and battled back into the game; some lapse defensive work from Slazenger allowed them in to convert, closing the gap and denying James Walker his deserved clean sheet. However Slazenger were not done yet, with time still on the clock, Ian Hedges orchestrated an attacking move, from deep within the Slazenger half, and was on hand in the circle to smash the ball into the net from close range when the goalkeeper had cleared Ben Jackson's first shot.

A good result for the 2nd's as they go into the Christmas break. Merry Christmas everyone!

Match Report

A new look second team travelled to Lindum for the first game of their league campaign. Having finished the season in third place, they were looking to get back to the same form. However, Lindum 4ths had finished second so this wasn't going to be an easy start, especially with captain Ste Roberts still playing some other silly sport, and Will "old man" Buckley, resting his bad back.

And so it proved. Lindum pressed from the start, making it hard for Slaz to get the ball moving. Lindum themselves looked dangerous on the break, and it took several important saves from goalkeeper moog to keep the visitors in it. Despite this, Lindum went into the break 2 goals up.

With a chance to reassess, Slaz came out stronger and more determined. A more aggressive midfield moved the ball faster, and caused more opportunities. Man of the match James Stevenson was clinical on the right wing and when Lindum's goalie saved a shot from Ian Hedges, Stevenson was there to put it away. Slaz had several more chances, but strong goalkeeping from Lindum kept them at bay. However, another strike from Richard Tuddenham was saved, Ben Graham picked up the rebound, extending his record to scoring in 30 consecutive seasons.

Unfortunately Lindum had their own goal scoring chances, netting two of their own, leaving the score at 4-2. A challenging start to the season, but plenty of positives to take into the league campaign for the 2nds. They face Sheffield Bankers 4ths next week at home.

Match Report

Slaz hosted a travelling Lindum 4th's side for a tough battle at Southfields, with Slaz eventually coming out on top. The first half saw Slaz struggle to get going, with sloppy passing and poor ball pace. Lindum were able to create pressure, and make life hard for Slaz. As the half went on, the home side worked their way into the game; James Swinden finding a pass to Richard Tuddenham to go 1-0 up. Jack Sumner was in the right place at the back post to slot away a second to put the team in control at halftime.

The second half was more in Slazenger's favour. With more fluid passing and movement, the team controlled the game better, with Tuddenham netting 2 more before the half was out. James Walker put in a fantastic performance in net, with a series of saves which earned him his clean sheet. Slaz move back to 3rd, with their first away fixture at Chesterfield to look forward to.

Match Report

Slazenger mens 2nd team overcame a sluggish start to overcome Lindum 4's 5-1 at the weekend. The long journey may have affected Slazenger as they struggled to get going in the first half allowing Lindum to take the lead, a nice passing move left Daz Buttery stranded in goal. Slazenger got back on equal terms through Ben Graham's deflected strike and gradually found their feet, beginning to create a number of chances. Amir Khalil started and finished an excellent move and despite the best effort of the defenders, he managed to slot the ball past the keeper to give Slazengers the lead at the break.

The 2nd half was dominated by Slazengers with Lindum rarely threatening, the only blip was a missed penalty stroke early in the half. A 2nd from Graham gave Slazengers breathing space and then Ben Jackson stepped forward scoring one and creating one for Asad Baig to put the game safe. Man of the match went to Robin Brearton who was making his first appearance of the season.

Match Report

Slazengers mens 2's made it 4 wins from 4 in the league with a 4-1 victory at home to Lindum 4's. A lackluster first half performance saw Slazengers only 1-0 to the good thanks to Ian Hedges who converted a short corner routine.

Some harsh words at half time saw Slazengers enter the 2nd half with more purpose and further goals from Ben Graham, Ben Jackson and Will Buckley took Slazengers to a comfortable lead. Lindum scored a late consolation through a short corner but with little time left to mount a comeback the points went to the home side.

Slazengers travel to Brigg on Saturday and will look to continue their unbeaten start to the league.

Match Report

Sunday saw a much changed Slazengers 2’nd team travel to Lincoln for a cup fixture. The long journey and unfamiliar line up saw Slazengers struggle with Lincoln going 4-0 up inside the first 20 minutes. Slazengers could have been forgiven if their heads went down but they didn’t and began the fight back. Captain Ben Graham scored the 1st from a good short corner routine and Matt Stacey pulled another back after catching the Lincoln defense napping off a free hit. Graham grabbed his second before the break to go in at the half 4-3 down. Slazengers were eager to continue the fightback in the 2nd half and took the game to Lincoln, Graham completed his hat-trick off another short corner and Andy Birkett scored to put Slazengers in front for the first time in the game.

Lincoln were shocked into action and continued to introduce fresh legs from their subs bench, a luxury Slazengers couldn’t afford having only 11 players, and managed to draw level meaning the game went to penalty flicks. A total of 20 flicks were taken, 10 of which were in sudden death and despite Slazengers keeper Daz Buttery making 3 saves, Lincoln managed to score the decisive flick to go through.

Match Report

Slazengers mens 2nd team put in a strong performance on Saturday running out comfortable 8-2 winners against Lindum Mens 4’s. Slazengers started strongly and took the lead when quick thinking by Matt Stacey resulted in him taking a quick free hit to himself, driving into the circle and firing home. Lindum weren’t happy with the original free hit and were soon doubly disappointed as Stacey grabbed his second finishing a good team move. Simon Randall making his first appearance of the season got on the score sheet as did Daz Buttery finishing neatly at the back post.

Lindum pulled one back but it was Slazengers who continued to press, playing good hockey throughout and pressing Lindum at every opportunity. Buttery got his second following good work down the right and then Stacey completed his hat trick just before the break.

The second half saw Slazengers slow a little thinking the job was done allowing Lindum to get a 2nd. Slazengers picked up their intensity again with Matt Stacey grabbing his fourth with an excellent reverse stick strike and Ben Graham completing the scoring. Matt Stacey took the man of the match award for Slazengers.
