Match Report
After a slip week, Slaz mens 1s hosted Harrogate at home on Halloween, hoping to avoid a spooky result befitting of the calendar.
And in unseasonably warm weather, Slaz stuttered throughout a disjointed first half. Slaz frankensteined together some decent chances, but neither managed to put any of them away. At half time it became clear this was going to be a game of few goals.
And after spells of good pressure in the second-half, Slaz finally took the first chance, going one-nil up when a well-worked short corner fell to Mark Swinden at the far post. And in a tight game, the first goal, like Dracula, sucked the life out of the opposition.
With the deadlock broken, Slaz made their further pressure pay through another penalty corner goal by Keith Leonard. Despite further pressure, and a number of promising counter-attacks, Slaz were unable to score again.
Special mentions go to Ben Jackson for an open-goal miss from a yard out that was scarier than anything you'd have seen trick-or-treating and keeper Andy Loftus for a frankly unprecedented third clean sheet before Christmas.
Rumour has it he hasn't stopped smiling since the final whistle...
Match Report

In an exhilarating performance on Saturday, Slazenger Hockey Club triumphed in their home match against Harrogate Hockey Club, finishing with an impressive 5-1 victory.
Displaying precise control and offensive prowess, Slazenger set about dismantling the Harrogate HC defence. The home team struck their initial goal minutes into the match, setting the tone for the rest of the game. Precision passes, effective teamwork, and tactical executions led to four more well-capitalised opportunities to bring the free-scoring tally to five.
Despite being under pressure for most of the match, Harrogate did manage to ripple the net once, denying a clean sheet for the home team. However, a resilient Slazenger defence largely denied them the final third, keeping Harrogate's scoring chances limited.
Looking ahead, Slazenger will hope to carry this momentum forward, and Harrogate will look to regroup and come back stronger in their next outing.

Jack Kitchen got his wood out for the team in a return from studies showing he had not lost his skills. Slaz again put out a really good team performance and if not for great saves by the keeper and defender, Slaz would have been several up at half time.

Slazengers mens first team were looking to bounce back after a difficult start to the season against a Harrogate side who were also looking for their first win. It was however not to be for Slazengers after the injury curse which has left so many of their players out of action struck again. Captain Will Buckley and influencial playmaker Paul Wiper were both off injured inside the first 15 minutes, Wiper who took a blow on the ankle will hope to be back for next week, Buckley however with a broken hand will be out for somewhat longer.
The game itself started well for Slazengers with John Sykes battling well to give Slazengers the lead however when Ben Graham also went off injured at half time, Slazengers were really up against it. Harrogate drew level after the break before Jez Whawell gave Slaz the lead once again only for Harrogate to draw level shortly after. With Slazengers looking to press on for victory despite their depleted numbers, Harrogate were able to break away and score a couple of late goals for a 4-2 victory. Although this was a loss, Slazengers performance will give them confidence for the coming weeks but with 4 of their most influencial players injured at the moment, they will be hoping for some quick recoveries in the week to come.

Slazenger men’s 1, returned to winning ways with a well deserved 7-4 victory away at Harrogate in a game that was a mix between great hockey and heavy challenges.
As usual, Slazenger found themselves a goal down early on but refused to let their heads go down and fired back quickly through Richard Hutchins with James Swinden giving them the lead shortly afterwards. Harrogate hit back but Hutchins’ second ensured Slazenger had the lead at the break.
The second half saw Slazenger reduced to 10 men on two occasions, the first saw Matt Birkett receive a harsh yellow for nothing more than an attempted challenge, the second Yellow was Jonny White with what can only be described as a blatant body check. Slazenger fought back well though and scored whilst short handed on both occasions.
James Swinden with his second, an excellent individual effort and Rich Whawell converting a well worked short corner routine. Harrogate fought well throughout and managed to pull a couple back but a Mark Swinden’s penalty flick and Rich Hutchins’ third made the game safe. James Swinden took the man of the match award with Mark Swinden close by with some excellent distribution from his own defensive line.

Harrogate started well and were high on confidence following their 4-1-win over Wakefield 2nds the previous week. They were the better side for the first 15 minutes.
But Slazenger's dependable defence, the best in the league, held-firm with Swallow, Hutchinson, Lee and Bartholomew again outstanding. Slazenger brought on forward Wiper for a defender in the second half and his introduction sparked the goals rush.

Slazenger fail to ride storm
Slazenger plunged to defeat at the hands of Harrogate in this stormy division two encounter. Three visiting players were despatched to the sin-bin as Slazenger struggled to cope with a ken Harrogate side. Tim Carr narrowly missed an opportunity in the first quarter and Steve Wood shaved the post. Will Buckley had an excellent game and was deservedly awarded man-of-the-match. He produced some fine runs up the left-hand side of the pitch and was a constant threat. Harrogate's first goal came from a freak situation when all players stood still except the home side's attacker who put the ball past the unfortunate Hellam. The home side added two further goals in the closing stages to seal the game, but Slazenger can take heart from this performance. On Saturday, they entertain Huddersfield at Featherstone, 3pm.

SLAZENGER IMPROVE, BUT FALTER
Luckless Slazenger failed to register the result their play deserved against a strong Harrogate side. The Horbury team came close on a number of occasions and hit the bar and uprights several times but in the end, were forced to take consolation from their improving form and the new-formed confidence of the younger players. With only one official umpire, it was difficult for the attackers so fully exploit the opponents defence, but Harrogate made the breakthrough midway through the opening half following a goalmouth scramble. Clearly stung, Slazenger moved up a gear and scored and excellent equaliser when Marcus Taylor ran down the right wing and slipped the ball through to Jonny wiper, who beat the goalkeeper and coolly slotted into an empty net.
Slazenger continued in the same vein after the re-start, but fell afoul of the umpires' refusal to award many somewhat justified penalty corners. The one they did earn produced a ""goal"" - only to be disallowed. Harrogate consequently snatched the victory their skipper later admitted they did not deserve from a dubious short corner. Slazenger who showed excellent supportive attacking play through the Taylor brothers, S Kaye and Graham Parker and solid tackling from Geoff Birkett, Andy Gommersal and Peruvian international Paddington Green will be hoping for better fortunes in their next league fixture against Bardsey tomorrow
