Match Report

Slazenger 3s played their first league game of the season against a well-drilled York 4s side.

The game started evenly, with both teams holding their own during the opening 10 minutes. Slazenger attacked well and looked dangerous, with Sarah Sykes playing a clever, deep role and helping to create opportunities. However, it was York who took control and capitalised on their chances, going into half-time with a 3–0 lead. The score could have been even greater if it hadn’t been for some awesome saves from returning goalkeeper Gemma Wilson, who kept Slazenger in the game.

Slazenger responded brilliantly in the second half, pulling together and showing great team spirit. There were also two very exciting senior debuts, with juniors Lauren Wood and Izzy Armitage making their first appearances for the senior side. Both fitted seamlessly into the team and made a huge contribution.

Izzy impressed with her skill and pace down the left midfield, while Lauren demonstrated some excellent tackling and distribution, showing that both players are more than ready to make the step up. Defender Nicole Knox also produced a fantastic goal-line save to deny York, but unfortunately York managed to find the net again to extend their lead.

Slazenger continued to battle right until the final whistle. In the closing minutes, a long ball down the right found forward Caro Schofield, who timed her cross perfectly into the circle. Sarah was on hand in her favourite position and made no mistake, finishing confidently to give Slazenger a deserved goal. Final score: Slazenger 3s 1–4 York 4s.

Despite the result, there were plenty of positives to take from the game, particularly the strong second-half performance and the impressive senior debuts from Lauren and Izzy. Player of the Match was a very close contest between the two debutants, but Izzy Armitage just edged it to take the prize. A fantastic first senior game!

Match Report

Slazenger Ladies 3s hosted York 4s in a highly anticipated top-of-the-table clash, with Slazenger sitting in 1st place and York close behind in 2nd. Having lost the away fixture 5–3 earlier in the season, Slazenger were determined to put in a strong performance on home turf.

The game couldn’t have started better for the hosts. Within the opening minutes Slazenger were awarded a short corner, and Ellie Page made no mistake, finding the back of the net to give Slazenger an early lead. Slazenger continued to control much of the first half, with central midfielders Sian Glover and Lisa Minchella dictating play superbly. Lauren Fealy and Mollie Glover were also solid in midfield, playing some excellent balls through the lines as Slazenger looked dangerous going forward. A series of short corners followed, with Slazenger mounting sustained pressure but narrowly missing out on extending their lead. Against the run of play, York broke forward and equalised, sending the teams into half time at 1–1.

Slazenger came out for the second half hungry for the win and quickly regained the lead. A strong push down the right by Page and a cross from Justine Birkett saw Evie Mollart in the right place at the right time (again) to slot home and make it 2–1. York continued to battle hard, and the Slazenger defence were repeatedly called into action. Goalkeeper Lauren Hattersley made several crucial saves, including a couple of impressive mid-air stops to preserve the lead. However, York were awarded a short corner and, despite Nicole Knox almost keeping the ball out, a deflection saw it cross the line to level the scores once again.

York then edged ahead when a Slazenger round-the-back manoeuvre uncharacteristically broke down, allowing the York centre forward to pounce. Slazenger pushed hard in the closing stages in search of an equaliser, but in the final minutes York struck again to seal a 4–2 win.

Player of the Match went to Sian Glover for her outstanding coverage and control of the midfield. Slazengers remain top of the table… but only just.

Match Report

Slazenger travelled to York this weekend to take on York 4s, who had made a flying start to the league and sat top of the table.

York were quick out of the blocks, finding the net within minutes of the opening whistle and then again soon after. Slazenger, however, refused to panic and began to settle into the game. Their persistence paid off when Evie Mollart struck from a short corner routine.

Not wanting to be left out Natalie Beech then made the scoresheet in spectacular fashion. Unfortunately, it was the wrong scoresheet. A ball taken high and flew into the top corner of her own net with the sort of finish most strikers dream about. Both sides traded further goals before the break, with Mollart calmly slotting home her second of the match from another well-worked short corner.

In the second half, the Slazenger defensive line really clicked together nicely, while keeper Tracy Lorriman produced a string of fine saves to keep her side in contention. From midfield, Stacey Drake was driving the team forward, firing balls into the attacking line. Returning forward Ruby Rodgers showed she hadn’t lost her touch, creating problems for the York defence.

Slazenger's third goal came from a moment of individual brilliance, as Ellie Page weaved her way past three defenders before rifling the ball onto the backboard — a superb solo effort that brought the visitors within one goal of their hosts. Unfortunately, York struck again late on to restore their two-goal cushion, and the game ended 5–3. The score-line didn’t quite reflect the balance of play, with Slazenger's unlucky not to come away with more. Player of the Match went to Sian Glover, who stepped into the defensive line with composure, broke up play with smart tackles, and looked threatening going forward.
