After last week’s game slid out effortlessly — a dominant 8–2 win over Doncaster that was as smooth and satisfying as they come — this week was... not that.
Playing against a lively Leeds Uni side, we struggled to get anything going. The whole match felt like an uphill battle: slow to start, awkward in transition, and everything just that little bit harder than it needed to be. Leeds didn’t score anything particularly special, but somehow the scrappy, bouncing mess always seemed to work in their favour. Right place, right time — every time. But even in a performance that felt clunky and hard to shift, we found some moments of relief.
Millie opened our account after a rogue, bobbly ball squirmed through a crowd of players. It wasn’t pretty, but she was there to guide it in — a gritty finish in a messy passage of play.
Emma followed it up with a far more satisfying moment, the result of Frankie going absolutely feral through the midfield. She bulldozed her way past defenders like she’d been possessed, leaving Leeds in disarray and Emma with a clean shot. Clinical. Cathartic. Just what we needed. Defensively, Eliz was a wall. Calm, composed, and constantly in the right place, she pulled off some perfectly timed tackles and kept the back line from completely unravelling. She rightly took Player of the Match for her consistency and command. Alys, brand new to ladies hockey and still fresh-faced, looked like she'd been playing for years. Calm under pressure, cool in tight spaces — not a single moment of panic. One to watch.
Zoe was relentless — up and down the pitch all game, pressing, tracking, and generally running herself into the ground. A real shift put in from first whistle to last. And Frankie… dear god. The chaos she brought was unmatched. Aggression, energy, and limbs flying. She left parts of the Leeds midfield questioning their life choices — and left herself with Tart of the Day honours for a mysteriously sore bum cheek. We didn’t ask.
It wasn’t the smooth, free-flowing performance we wanted — more stop-start, awkward, and harder to move than it should’ve been — but sometimes that’s how it goes. We’re shaking it off, regrouping, and looking ahead to next week, when the full squad’s back and we can get things shifting properly again."

After a 4-0 win yesterday, Slaz needed to “hydrate the muscles” with non-alcoholic fluids last night in order to prepare for today’s game. (Quote by Slaz 1’s head doctor Rudgey - even though everyone had alcoholic beveraginos anyway).
The first half got off to a good start with Rudgey scoring a nice reverse stick goal only 3 mins into the game making it 1-0 to Slaz. The Leeds side had about 500 subs so constantly had fresh legs running around on the pitch as they were determined for a win after their previous 2 losses. With that in mind, UoL charged forwards with the ball, with Gemma saving the first shot but the second was deflected in to make it 1-1. Hannah played an absolute cracking game in the middle, distributing balls left, right and centre for our forwards to run on to. A short corner gave Slaz the opportunity to make it 2-0 and Hannah did absolutely that, a straight strike through the keepers legs. Slaz kept piling on the pressure in the Leeds D, but weren’t able to find the target leaving the first half as 2-1 to Slaz.
In the second half, the tone felt very different. Slaz had already annihilated a few of the UoL faces so they were out for revenge (by scoring goals!!). Slaz once again managed to get shots on goal, but the UoL keeper was “like playing against Gemma” (Quote by team captain Franks), making lots of great saves. Amy decided to take matters into her own hands and provided some of the worst stick tackling ever seen, although her eyes were open so we’re getting somewhere... ish. UoL made a break towards the D, managing to score from a tap in making it 2-2. Our defensive line put in a good shift with their tackles and managed to send the ball flying back down to the other end of the pitch. Maisie picked up the balls sent down the pitch and with confidence took on the Leeds defence to win some short corners or take a shot on goal. A special mention to colour co-ordinated bobble&socks player Ash in the defensive line who made some superb tackles and despite at training saying she doesn’t run up the pitch, she was running at full pelt to lose the Leeds players trying to win the ball back from her. Towards the end of the match, the umpire spots a Slaz foot on the line, giving Leeds a flick which they managed to score. The final score was 3-2 to University of Leeds. Onwards and Upwards for our away game next weekend against Driffield.

‘The Dastardly Plan’
Thursday 11th March saw I think our first ever that I can remember anyway, evening league game which was rearranged.
Leeds Uni have now broken the stalemate and sit comfortably at the top of our division and deservedly so with their style of fast flowing and direct play.
However, we had a ‘Dastardly Plan’!
Our last meeting in the Cup at Leeds Uni saw us go down 9 – 1 and we knew that last nights encounter was not going to be easy. All our warriors new what they had to do to compete at the same level as LU and we did brilliantly, winning plaudits from the LU coach and visiting Umpire.
What we didn’t know was that they had a spy in our camp who managed to score 2 of the best goals of the evening. Donna ‘Ginga’ 003.5 slipped into the last line of our defence to an unsuspecting team and scored brilliantly past agent 000.ooo! Lisa GK with a ‘Thunderball’ of a strike not but once, but twice.
007 Katie Firth and M (Lisa M) managed to turn the spy and pointed her in the direction that she should be playing. Accepting that assassination was the teams next plan she duly returned her efforts to the benefit of the home side.
I believe the message of ‘Have some Fun tonight’ as whatever the result it wasn’t going to affect our league position was possibly stretched a little when agent 0013.75 Lou (Goldfinger) decided that the best form of defence was to talk the opposition to death. After nearly succumbing to this torture LU decided to adopt the silent treatment and simply ignored her.
Tactically we managed to move Goldfinger from the defensive trenches to her observation post at the front where she continued her mind torture of wearing the opposition down, even with parental comments ‘ If she stopped rattling as much she might….?’ amusing the ever supportive group of supporters.
We proved yet again that we can adopt different styles of play and with LU actually only scoring 2 goals we have to say the 4 – 0 result was on reflection a job well done. In the eyes of defeat and all that, every player did extremely well. With key players missing in action our 1st XI squad is now showing great resolve and promise for the future.
Our next campaign is against Thirsk on Saturday, lets hope it is our Casino Royale and all our chips come down in our favour. Smile!
