The ladies 1/2’s mixed team took on Halifax in the semi final of the Yorkshire Cup.
Slaz looked the stronger of the 2 teams, but a mix up at the Slaz goal post allowed Halifax to tap in the first goal of the game. Undeterred Slaz continued to drive the game and the equaliser came courtesy of a reverse shot from Rudge.
The second half saw end to end action and concerns about the game ending with penalty flick were starting to emerge - Field had other ideas when she took a free hit and fired the ball into the d from beyond the 25. Most were surprised, not least the Halifax keeper as the ball caught Rudge’s stick and deflected into the net.
Heading for the final now at the end of the season - league titles may not be coming our way but the cup....maybe!!

Slazengers got off to a struggling start with visitors Halifax putting the pressure on early with significant attempts on goal. However, the girls in green remained strong defensively with consistent impressive saves in the air from their GK; Tracey Lorriman. After a tough opening phase, Slazengers took the lead with a goal from Jessica Rudge.
After a change in formation into the the second half, Slazengers stepped up their pace and were challenging Halifax even more than they anticipated and dominated the game.
Halifax then levelled the score line at 1-1 which did not dishearten the team but caused them to dig deep for another. Shortly followed a goal from Frankie Tyrell who gave Slazengers the advantage they needed with a 2-1 lead.
As tensions rose Halifax had a player suspended from the pitch and Slazengers were able to maintain their lead. However, in the closing minutes, Halifax managed to score another goal which lead to a 2-2 draw.
Overall an impressive game with great team spirit.

Slazengers ladies first team got off to a great start this Saturday, with an early goal in the first 4 minutes. A visionary pass into the circle from Andrea Wallace to the far post was secured nicely into the back of the net by Helen Hough. Despite a large amount of support from the Slaz sideline, the lead was short lived. Halifax retaliated with a goal in the next two minutes and another goal at 8 minutes.
Some strong play from both teams gave a few chances for goals at either end of the pitch, but Slazengers were next to score. 5 minutes before half time, Helen Hough slipped an underarm pass to Jessica Rudge who finalised the goal, to finish the first half at 2-2.
Halifax came back strongly at half time, scoring quickly after the restart at 37 minutes and followed with 2 more goals. Slaz replied at 66 minutes with top goal scorer Jessica Rudge scoring again, but it was too late for Slaz who suffered a 5-3 loss. Commendable performances went to Lisa Michella and debut star Alice Gascoigne.

Match Report
Slazenger went to Halifax looking to avenge their 0-6 home loss. They looked like a completely different side as they proceeded to take a 2-0 lead much to the delight of the Slaz spectators who had travelled to support. The first Slaz goal came from Sarah Cooper who got on the end of a great ball in from Amy Smeaton and the second goal was despatched capably by Zoe Smeaton after a goalmouth scramble. This left Halifax somewhat stunned however they stepped up their game again to narrow the score to 2-1 shortly before half time.
Unfortunately the second half saw Halifax make a couple of changes which strengthened their attack and enabled them to get an early equaliser. Despite valiant efforts from the Slaz defence and Goalie Eleanor Townend and with player of the match Lisa Minchella having to go off injured, they were unable to hold the home team to a draw and eventually allowed the Halifax winner to be scored.
A disappointing end to a match that Slaz deserved to get something out of and really should have put to bed in the first half. There is no match next week due to a slip date.

Match Report
To say Slazenger had a 'bad day at the office' was an understatement this week. Following last week's defeat at Hull Slaz were hopeful that they could gain a result, indeed Halifax were going into this game on the back of two defeats. However Halifax had clearly resolved any issues they might have had and the young team came out well planned and fighting fit. Slaz were under pressure from the beginning and defended well to keep the Halifax forwards at bay with joint player of the match Zoe Smeaton and Sarah Hobbs both providing key tackles in the middle of the park. Although many great saves were made by Slazenger keeper Eleanor Townend, the Halifax forwards eventually managed to break away and score three times in a short period, sending Slaz into the break a miserable three goals down which was felt to be undeserved.
As the umpires commented after the game - the half time break saw a renewed Slaz hit Halifax hard gaining many short corners and were extremely unlucky not to score with several chances being wasted. Sensing a comeback from Slaz, Halifax regrouped and piled the pressure on, resulting in another 3 goals in close succession putting the game beyond the reach of the home team. The Halifax organisation and overall fitness were key in the second half and basically Slaz had no reply, not helped by being down to 10 men for a while when striker Jessica Rudge was dismissed. A very disappointing result for Slaz but credit should not be taken away from Halifax who played extremely well and were much improved to the side which Slaz beat both home and away last year by a four goal margin. Next week Slaz go to Lockwood Park to play local rivals Dragons expecting a challenging game as always.
Match Report
Slaz knew that they had to beat Halifax to avoid a possible bottom three place this week. Although Halifax had been beaten soundly by Slaz the first game of the season, they had some good results under their belt and an easy game was by no means guaranteed. Slaz showed their determination to take the game to Halifax in their first attack of the game where a driving run and accurate pass by Sarah Hobbs found Claire Mills to score a great goal. Slaz continued to dominate the play and soon scored their second goal from a short corner with an Amanda Sowerby clean strike. After 20 mins a flick was awarded to Halifax which GK Eleanor Townend saved, but Halifax then managed to score against the run of play with 5 minutes on the clock to leave the half time score as 2-1 toSlaz.
The half time team talk praised the standard of hockey and impressed the importance of continuing with the passing and moving. Slaz needed to improve their goal difference in order to go above Halifax this week and the possibility of winning by 4 goals was not felt to be out of the question. Indeed, the goal difference was rapidly raised as Captain and leading goalscorer Helen Hough scored a hat-trick. Halifax managed to reply twice, firstly 10 minutes into the second half and then by way of a penalty flick but realistically the game looked out of their reach as they conceded a further three goals – a brace for Hannah Field and one from Katie Firth. Slaz did relax slightly and as well as missing a couple of opportunities, allowed Halifax to score twice in the dying minutes of the game which ended as a convincing 8-4.
Match Report
Slazenger went into the game with Halifax with three key squad members missing but were still hopeful that their last years’ experience of playing in the league might count for something.
Slaz started positively and strongly, so were somewhat shell-shocked when a breakaway by Halifax led to their first goal; completely against the run of play. Determined to level the score, Slaz continued to attack and were rewarded when an Amanda Sowerby strike from a short corner found the back of the net. This spurred on the other forwards and a further two goals were scored in quick succession by captain Helen Hough to give Slaz the half time advantage.
The Halifax coach’s half time team talk must have spurred them on as they came out strongly and the game seemed to even out much more. However the Green Army proved to be too much for Halifax to handle and despite the opposition managing to score a further goal, two fantastic goals by Jessica Rudge soon had Slaz back in their stride. Katie Browne sealed the game with another great goal to make the final score 2-6 in Slazenger’s favour. Next week brings a difficult game against Chapeltown at home 1.30pm – all supporters welcome!
