Slazenger Serve Up a Sweet Slice of Victory in Harrogate
On a crisp, chilly Harrogate morning—the kind perfectly suited for warm scones and steaming pots of Earl Grey—Slazenger arrived ready to whisk up something delicious against their hosts. With an average age of 23, the travelling side brought a delightful blend of fresh éclairs and well-proved fruit loaves; a mixture of youthful bounce and seasoned reliability.
It was the *experienced* layer of the cake that broke the deadlock. Coops, ever the crafty baker, pilfered the ball from a faffing defender on a 16-yard hit-out—like swiping the last bun from the counter when no one’s looking—and sent a high, crisp shot straight into the top shelf. A proper ginger-snap of a finish, giving Slazenger a 1–0 lead to savour.
Through midfield, Hannah danced like she was twirling through the tearoom with a silver cake stand, gliding past challenges with the grace of a perfectly iced fondant fancy. Meanwhile, debutant Lauren — swiftly dubbed 'Mini Emma'—served up defensive tackles as smooth and reliable as a clotted-cream dollop. Alongside her, the backline trio of Senior Citizen Emma (adding maturity like a vintage fruitcake), Eliz, and Becca battled with the density and determination of a well-baked Yorkshire parkin.
The second half saw Slazenger dominate possession like a table overflowing with afternoon tea delights. But despite the pressure, the extra helpings wouldn’t come. Coops narrowly missed a back-post tap-in—like a profiterole just slipping off the fork—followed by an opposition foot on the goal line that went unnoticed by the umpires, who were perhaps distracted by their frequent tea-break-style chats with the captains. Chances for Arina and Alys rolled just wide, like rogue currants escaping a scone.
That second half felt longer than queueing for Betty’s on a Saturday, but when the final whistle finally chimed like a polite teacup on saucer, the scoreboard remained a sweet, satisfying 1–0 to Slazenger.
Three points secured, the perfect pastry tucked neatly into the tin. Slazenger now look forward to next week’s home fixture against Scarborough—hoping to serve up another delicious performance.
Match Report
Harrogate came out strong from the first whistle, pressing high and making it difficult for Slazenger to link up passes to their forwards. Despite the early pressure, Hannah worked tirelessly in midfield, supported by Zoe and Frankie, as they fought to drive the team forward.
Slazenger's defence put in a serious shift to keep up with Harrogate's fast-paced attack, but the pressure eventually told, and the visitors broke the deadlock with a well-placed goal.
Slazenger struggled with consistency, with mistakes allowing Harrogate to dominate possession. However, there were flashes of strong play, particularly in the distribution from the back, setting up attacking chances.
At half-time, the score stood at 1-0, and Slazenger regrouped, determined to fight back. They started the second half with renewed energy, but Harrogate struck again early, doubling their lead. Despite this setback, Slazenger kept creating chances—Rudgey rattled the crossbar, and Mollie was agonizingly close after hitting the post.
The team continued to battle, but Harrogate delivered the final blow with a scrappy goal; a loose ball in the D trickling over the line to make it 3-0.
A frustrating game was capped off with a bit of drama towards the end of the game where Hannah earned a green card— a result of one of Harrogate's players calling her a stupid dickhead.
A tough match, but Slazenger showed resilience and moments of promise despite the scoreline.
Hopefully a home game will work in our favor when we face Chesterfield next week. Time to regroup and reenergize

Ladies 1’s played host to Harrogate ladies 2’s on Saturday. From previous meetings, as far as anyone could remember, Slaz were yet to take a point.
On the back of last weeks win, Slaz hoped to continue their unbeaten run and made that resolve clear from the off. Pressing hard to keep the ball in the Harrogate D Slaz made the defence work hard to keep the ball from nearing the net. It was a good 15 mins before Slaz finally broke the deadlock when coops put the first in. This was followed minutes later with a second for the striker when she got a slight touch on Gilbert’s shot from the top of the d. Slaz continued the pressure for the remainder of the half but couldn’t manage a third.
The second half started in a similar vain only this time it was Harrogate calling the shots and they managed to level the score with about 15 minutes to go. However, having enjoyed the winning feeling the previous week and not wanting to lose their unbeaten start to the season Slaz were not going to give up easily. Determined to regain the lead Slaz regained their composure and went back to playing as they had in the first half. With 5 minutes to go the ball was sent to Field from the back, she quickly smashed it through the Harrogate defence to coops who was waiting to take the ball around the keeper to complete her hat trick and give the lead back to Slaz.
Harrogate did not give up and play was end to end for the remainder of the game. Slaz were unlucky not to manage a forth with shots skimming the posts, but when the final whistle went with the score line at 3:2 in Slaz’s favour the ladies were more than happy to be finally taking all the points from “the gate”.

Match Report
The ladies 1st team travelled to Harrogate on Saturday hoping to continue their unbeaten run.
The first half saw an evenly matched game with chances on goal for both teams. Slaz maintained the majority of possession and created many goal scoring opportunities, but the post and the crossbar played their part in denying them a well earned goal. At the other end, Harrogate were able to hit the target midway through the half and again on the stroke of half time.
Harrogate started the second half with increased confidence and pressed the defence hard. A well executed short corner put the Home team 3 ahead and within minutes a forth had been scored. Slaz continued to play their game and caused many difficulties for the Harrogate defence. However, when a stunning run from Paige beating the keeper, lead to the ball hitting the backboard was disallowed it became clear that it would not be Slaz’s day.
The unbeaten run came to an end with the final score 4:0.
Match Report

The second half started much better, with Holly Tyres scoring and lifting Slaz’s spirits further. Another goal from Frankie Tyrrell shortly followed. Slaz were battling hard, 1 goal down but Harrogate scored one last goal in the final few minutes. Final score 4-2 to Harrogate.

Match Report
Slazenger Ladies 1st XI showed their true metal on Saturday, putting bottom of the league Harrogate, to the sword with an impressive 7 – 0 win.
Although a good result the score line did not reveal the total dominance Slazenger enjoyed throughout the game. The visitors rarely broke into the Slazenger half in the first 35 mins.
Without exaggeration the first half saw 3 shots on goal cleared off the line with many other attempts narrowly going wide, the score line could easily have been into double figures.
Welcoming back Sarah Cooper after a injury lay-off of several weeks added another dimension to the Slazenger attack. Excellent performances from the mid-field ‘Libero’ player, Ailish Hendry and the dynamique Kerry Rollin at right half only further troubled the Harrogate defence.
Beth Crowther recently coming into the squad showed great promise and resolve and looks to be staking her claim for a rightful place in the squad for the future.
On a day when our defence were rarely troubled, indeed Lisa GK may have been looking for a refund of her match fee as she barely saw the ball never mind touched it, it was encouraging to see another young player at left half Lauren Carruthers, settling down into a position she hopes to make hers for the future.
With comments from Lou ‘I love right wing’ and Hobbsie blisteringly ravaging the right defence of ‘The Gate’ our attack formation was back, ably supported by our utility player Claire Mills and Burger Tossing Hols Tyers, the young side of Harrogate were quite simply…taken apart.
A good performance coming into our last game of the season at home against Leeds 1.30pm push back, will cap an extremely enjoyable end to what has been a very competitive league programme.
