Match Report

A tough match against Wakefield, despite the challenge, our players showed fantastic determination, teamwork and spirit throughout. The final score was 2–0 to Wakefield, but the team held their heads high and should be proud of their performance. In goal, Nikolai made some excellent saves and really kept us in the game, facing some very powerful shots from the older opposition.

At the back, Harry showed a calm head in defence with some great tackles, while Georgie timed tackles superbly and made some great passes up the pitch. Katie was a key player in defence all game and fully deserved her Player of the Match award.

Ollie moved into midfield and worked hard, helping link play across the pitch. Noah, despite being one of the youngest players, put in a fantastic shift and linked up really well with Addy, who was strong throughout – supporting the defence and pushing forward when needed. Out wide, Alistair led by example as Captain, working tirelessly on the wing. Further forward, Jess covered so much ground and worked incredibly hard both in attack and defence. Cerys also worked hard and kept pushing for the team. Ella, our tiniest player, showed great determination and battled hard throughout the game.

A big thank you to both Gemmas for supporting the kids, Amelia for managing the team today, and Nicci for stepping in to umpire at the last minute.

And finally… the Donut of the Day goes to Gemma S, who might need a quick refresher on counting to four! During a short corner we already had four players back defending, but she still called for another one to come back – a funny moment that gave everyone a laugh!

Great effort from the whole team today – lots to be proud of.

Match Report

On a very wet and challenging morning in Wakefield, the Devs team started with real intensity. Noah drove play forward early, winning a short corner, and Ruth came close twice before finally scoring on the third attempt — 1–0 Slaz. The defence remained rock-solid, keeping Wakefield at bay until just before halftime when Wakefield snuck an equaliser.

In the second half, Slaz continued to dominate possession and pressure, with strong defensive work from Katie, Ollie, and Harry. Matthew came close to scoring, but Wakefield’s experienced players capitalised on their chances to take the lead and extend it to 3–1. Despite the final score, Slaz’s youngsters delivered a performance full of determination, skill, and attacking intent.

Match Report

With bragging rights at stake the game was end to end with both teams giving it their all.

Jess L put Slazenger ahead early in the first half. A second goal was inevitable, unfortunately it went to Wakefield midway through the second halt, it could have been more if it wasn’t for excellent defending from Harry C and Katie S at the back.

Match Report

Slaz were missing the bulk of their usual midfield so it was time for players to step up and show versatility – a job made harder by the Wakefield side being bigger and older (and always including four adults!).

Slaz got their heads down and worked hard, digging deep in defence and sometimes creating extended periods of pressure in attack, but the task proved too much.

Wakefield deserved their 3-0 victory, which could have been more but for keeper Adam Garside. Slazenger man of the match was Joe Minchella for his hard work in defence and skills and running going forward.

Match Report

The best part of this game for Slaz was the first 2 minutes! We had a plan to peg Wakefield back and used it, a fast long ball to Alex Stacey saw him tie the adult defender and the keeper in knots before calmly slotting home. After that it went slowly downhill, Slazenger had chances but it became end-to end hockey. As Slaz tired in the second half, Wakefield’s most skilful youngster got himself a hat-trick and Slaz missed the chance to go top of the league. MoM was (again) Will Gascoigne

Match Report

Slazenger Development hosted local rivals Wakefield HC and it was a keenly fought derby game. Slazenger gave debuts to 3 new players, Joe Tebay, Tom Hyde and Lucy Brereton but despite this the home team played continually as a unit, at times dominating the game with Wakefield defending furiously and to good effect, attacking Slazenger on the break.

Slazenger did break the visitors down twice, goals coming from Will Gascoigne and Davey Ramsdale, with only one conceded. Final score 2-1 to Slazenger with Man of the Match being Tom Hyde.

Match Report

Slazenger Men’s 5’s took on local rivals Wakefield in a friendly and after a tight, evenly contested 1st half no one would have been able to accurately guess the final score at the half-time interval, when the match was tied at 0-0. Both teams worked hard and had opportunities to dominate but just a lack of control at important moments or poor decision making meant that there were few meaningful attacks for either side. Slazenger keeper Harry Buttery never touched the ball once in the first half.

The second half started much better for the home team, Chris Gascoigne was tenacious on the left wing tackling adults and juniors with equal effectiveness and debutant Tom Atkinson was starting to find his feet in midfield. It wasn’t long before striker Peter Gunning found his range and netted for Slazenger after a good move down the right wing by George Fealy. Once the first goal went in Slazenger couldn’t stop scoring. Peter Gunning scored three more times. All the goals were the result of decent team play, accurate passing and players getting behind the Wakefield defence.

Elliott Golding was proving to be a catalyst for lots of good attacks down the right hand side with Danny Moakes breaking down Wakefield attacks on the left and quickly turning defence into attack. Such was the protection Danny Croxall and Adam Drake offered in defence, that there was only one notably attack for the home keeper to deal with in the second half. Slazenger continued to press, such was their dominance and Harry Gunning weighed in with a brace of goals and Danny Moakes managed to get on the end of an attack that he had initiated.

Final score 7-0.
