October 16, 2012 by Slazenger HC

Slaz won a hard fought game against Ben Rhydding 2-1. The home team were quick to attack, scoring first from captain and birthday girl Gemma Whittam.

However, Ben Rhydding fought back into the game, winning a short corner. This was converted to draw the game level. With a break to regroup at half time, Slaz came back out stronger, scoring the second goal within minutes of the restart. Claire Dunstan took the honours, slotting the ball home.

Report: 29-09-2012 – Ladies 3rd’s (2) vs. (0) Thirsk 2nd’s

October 8, 2012 by Slazenger HC

In their second game of the season, Slazenger’s ladies 3rd team enjoyed a significant victory, preparing them selves for what we hope will be a highly successful season.

It wasn’t long after the start that things started looking ominous for the home side. when around 7 minutes, Thirsk were awarded a penalty flick. Goalkeeper Lizzie Tunstall kept it cool as the ball was taken, making a simple yet effective save allowing the team to reset.

It was newcomer Clair Dunstan who made the first significant attack; an amazing break down the right hand side of the pitch, striking the ball across the D. An epic battle for a goal between slazenger’s Justine Birkett and Thirsk’s Keeper grants Slaz the short corner, but unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be.
It was Alex Stead who finally broke the deadlock, smashing the ball into the back of the net, 1-0 !; hopefully the first of many goals.

With a minute left of the fist half, Thirsk were given a short corner from the ball contacting a defender’s foot in the D, the defence fight off a strong Thirsk attack but a Slaz stick is lifted and yet another short corner is signalled. Thirsk panic under pressure and miss crucial pass and shot. The half time whistle is blown allowing Slazenger to regroup.

Becky Gomersal of Slazenger’s takes the push back and it is sent to Linda Stacey who drives forward for yet another fantastic attack. Amanda Lacey and Sarah Richie break down a fast and furious Thrisk attack and Sarah smashes the ball out wide to left wing Naomi Horsley. Super sub Clair Dunstan within 1 minute of her come back on the pitch strikes the ball into the back of the net. 2-0.

The score stayed that way until the final whistle, with Slaz walking away with a respectable 2-0 victory.

Special mention goes to Becky Gomersal who spurred on the team as the comical cheerleader for the team on and off the pitch.

Report: 22-09-2012 – Ladies 3rd’s (0) vs (3) Lincoln Roses 1st’s

September 26, 2012 by Slazenger HC

The new look Slazenger’s ladies 3rd team got their season off to a start with debuts from 4 players against Lincoln Roses 1st’s.

The match promised to be a tough encounter with Lincoln topping the group last season. Slazenger’s made a promising start with some good work in the midfield. The deadlock was eventually broken when roses converted from a penalty corner from a well executed drill.

Slazenger’s battled hard but few chances came our way. Just before the stroke of half time, Roses scored again with a top strike in the D. Half time team talk and with some inspirational words from coach Hayley Wood, slazenger’s heads were high.

Throughout the second half the play was again dominated in midfield. Slazenger’s could not get the ball up to their forwards; waiting to pounce. Just before the full time whistle, Roses converted again from a penalty corner. In all a very hard battled game which culminated in a 0-3 loss but with plenty of positives to work on and a thoroughly enjoyable game! The only way is up from here on.

Player of the match on debut was Linda Stacey for her awesome work rate in midfield.

Report: 25-03-2012 – Ladies 3rd’s (6) vs. (3) City of York 5th’s

March 30, 2012 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger’s ladies 3rds last game of the season ended in triumph as they bagged 6 goals in a thrilling tie against city of York 5.

Gemma Whittam was again first to open their account, scoring from close range and Katie Browne soon following and netting a goal.

Julie Bacon then whipped a stunning goal in from the top of the D and Katie Browne got back in the action to score another. 4-0 up slaz let their defences down and city of York capitalised scoring 3 goals in 5 minutes.

Half time and an old school ‘pep talk’ from Mrs Finch inspired the team to go forward. Second half and Slazenger’s completely dominated with Julie bacon getting on the score sheet again and Sophie Williams converting a short corner. Final score 6-3 and Slazenger’s end the season on a euphoric note
