Ladies 2nd’s (0) vs. (10) Scarborough 1st’s
Slaz were at home on Saturday against Scarborough. The sky was blue and the sun was out, perfect hockey conditions. Slaz started strong and were straight on the ball, however soon after Scarborough picked up their pace and had a few breaks, followed by some incredible reverse hits; resulting in goals. Sadly falling a keeper fall, GK Tracey pulled her back, but tried to carry on not leaving the team without a keeper. A defensive flick went wide, but this was not enough to stop a few more balls entering the net, with the halftime score being 5-0 to Scarborough.
Again, Slaz began the second half well and pushed into the Scarborough D, not allowing the first half score to drag us down. Unfortunately, we couldn’t translate the efforts into a goal. Scarborough were again quick on the counter attack and managed to put another 5 goals past us. Another hefty score, but we learn and go again. Player went to Rachel for her speedy run and great tackles in defence. Tart went to Alex for her downward dog in our D and a few other floor routines throughout the game. Next up.. top of the league, bring it on!!
Ladies 3rd’s (9) vs. (0) Huddersfield Dragons 3rd’s
Slazengers hosted Huddersfield Dragons at home with a very convincing victory. From the off Huddersfield Dragons were unable to cope with the skill and speed of the Slazenger players and it wasn’t long before Gemma W powered the ball past the dragons GK to start the scoring. Slazenger continued to outplay the young Huddersfield side and the goals flowed taking the half time score to 5 -0. The second half saw Slazengers continue to dominate and convert.
Special mention to Rebecca, who had a great first game with the 3’s fitting straight in working the ball in the midfield showcasing her skill and tenacity. The final score was 9-0 with goals from Caro who having come back from a long standing injury proved the old girl still has it with a hattrick and other scorers being Gemma W (2), Maisie (2), Mia, and Evie. Player of the match went to Thea for her speed in getting to the ball and her outstanding tackles and distribution.
Ladies 4th’s (1) vs. (2) Huddersfield 1st’s
The Ladies 4th Team faced Huddersfield 1’s away this weekend and what a game it was! The whole team put every bit of effort in and were rewarded with the first goal of the game. Emma Hammond put the perfect goal in from a short to the excitement of her team mates. Huddersfield fought back but an unfortunate (and painful) ball to the knee of Captain Julie Bailey took her off the pitch with 5 minutes to go to half time. Having no subs – Huddersfield equalised.
Most of the team had had some sort of fall during the first half due to the slippery pitch but with a can of deep heat, Slazenger returned tired, but eager. However, Huddersfield really put the pressure on and Slazenger dropped to play more and more defensively. Keeper, Charlotte Richardson was superb and was even praised by the opposition’s coach (despite him being on child care duties at the same time). The last 10 minutes were intense. Sarah Paverley deserves a special mention as just didn’t stop. It just wasn’t to be, Huddersfield scored in the last 2 minutes. The final score 2:1 to Huddersfield. Player – Emma Hammond and Charlotte Richardson. Tart – Francesca Chromiakova.
Men’s 4th’s (2) vs. (4) Halifax 3rd’s
The men’s 4s were beaten by Halifax 3s 4-2 this weekend. The visitors took the lead but only held it for a few minutes until Slazengers levelled the score from a short corner. Once again Halifax took the lead and once again it didn’t last long. The second Slazenger equaliser came from their captain who won the ball inside the D and calmly slotted it past the keeper. The score at half time was 2-2 but Slazengers couldn’t keep the momentum in the second half as they conceded twice and were unable to retaliate leaving the final score 4-2 to Halifax.
