Ladies 2nd's
After a 6 week break for Slaz 2s, and the cancellation of the game last week, Slaz finally travelled to Ben Rhydding to play Skipton. Skipton came out strong and fast which caught Slaz off guard and saw Skipton gain an early goal. Slaz then settled in and looked promising repeatedly pressuring the skipton defence, winning a few short corners but unfortunately could not find the back of the goal! Skipton responded with a quick break resulting in their second goal. At half time slaz were 3-0 down after Skipton scored from a short corner just before half time. The second half saw slaz come out strong, working as a team with quick one-two passes and spent a lot of time in Skipton’s half but again struggling to find the goal. Slaz were awarded a short corner and whilst it didn’t go to plan slaz kept calm and recovered with Lucy Howarth reversing the ball into the bottom right corner. Whilst slaz continued to pressure Skipton with many chances in front of the goal, Skipton defence and keeper kept Slaz from getting a second goal. Skipton again caught slaz on the break and saw their 4th goal. Slaz lost 4-1 but the score line did not reflect the effort and positives that could be taken from the game. Player went to Lucy Howarth.

U10 Girls
Today was a brilliant day for Slazenger‘s Hockey Club. We had three teams out for our U10 girls – so apologies for the long post!!! It was brilliant to see so many girls (and a couple of bonus boys) playing hockey who were smiling and happy throughout. The B team were playing this morning in Chesterfield, the C team were playing in Wakefield at lunchtime and the A team were playing in Leeds this afternoon.
The C team, which was made up of players who had not played before in tournaments, did the club proud. They did not stop trying and persevered throughout, I was so proud of them. They came away with four draws and one loss, which was amazing for their first tournament. We had Charlie as GK who made extraordinary saves. The defence of Katie and Matthew kept the attackers out the D. Lydia worked very hard in midfield and got the ball out to the wings. The forwards, Jess, Savannah, Alistair and Darcie tried their hardest to get the ball into the D and had some great shots. I could not have been prouder of this group of kids who are mostly only six or seven years old. The player of the match went to Katie who was super in defence and is one of the only people I know that can boss Matthew around. Thanks to Ollie Leonard for umpiring, Eleanor Randle for supporting the team and Emma Hammond for recording the scores.
The B team had a few new players who settled well into the team especially after many changes to the team thanks to Covid. Matilda and Isabella were solid in defence and Martha improved throughout the tournament. We had goals from Pheobe, Heidi and Edie! Amie made some excellent saves when needed. The team won three games, drew two and lost one so finished second in their division. Player of the match went to Edie who dominated throughout. Thanks to Kirsty Buckley for managing the team.
The A team were playing in division one, having topped the division last tournament. They had a few tough games but persevered throughout. We had a new goalkeeper in, Lillianna who kept a clean sheet. The defence of Lorna and Amelia worked hard together and put in some brilliant tackles. Rosie worked hard as ever in midfield, even nearly losing a tooth! With Lauren busy at a swimming competition, her brother Jake stepped in. We also had another new player in the A team, Harriette who had some great shots. Beth dominated out on the wing and even managed a cheeky goal. But our player of the match went to Sophie, who made some great tackles, had some great runs with the ball and scored. The girls topped division 1 again! Thanks to Lesley Godson for keeping the scores and Adrian Buckley for umpiring.
The future of ladies hockey is looking great
U10 Boys
Another great tournament from the U10 Boys today.
With one team not turning up, the boys only played 3 games, with everyone giving their all, and it was a pleasure to watch. 3 games played, winning one, drawing one and narrowing losing one.
Some outstanding defending by Player Of The Tournament, Alfie McAlinden, great stick skills by Harry Lockwood, who also scored his first goal, some great saves from Nikolai Fleming, great runs by Charlie Hammond and some great tackling by George Buckley, we’re some of the highlights of our games. That said, all the boys showed great determination, spirit and resilience, and this was evident for everyone to see in the last game played. A super set of lads and a super days hockey. Well done all 👏🙂🏑
