2nd Nov 2013 – Match Reports

November 2, 2013 by Slazenger HC

Ladies 1st’s (0) vs. (5) Boston Spa 1st’s
Sadly Slazenger Ladies 1st team were unable to curb a current run of defeats at Boston Spa this weekend. Although the opposition appeared to start as the stronger team, Slaz defended well and eventually got into their stride mid way through the first half, playing some good hockey and unlucky not to score. It was unfortunate that a Boston Spa goal in the last few minutes saw Slaz 1-0 down at half time.

Further disappointment came for Slaz as Boston Spa managed to score again almost immediately after the start of the second half. Slaz often showed a lack of urgency and off the ball movement and were unable to contain this well structured team. Boston Spa’s well practiced set pieces and fitness tested Slaz who conceded a further 4 goals (3 from deflections) with no reply despite having 11 short corners and numerous chances.

Despite what the scoreline suggested, this game was a lot more even than in previous defeats and there are positives which can be taken and worked on. Thanks also go to player of the match Andrea Wallace for stepping up from the seconds to help, due to what is becoming an all too familiar squad shortage for away games. Next week sees Slaz take on Ben Rhydding 2s. Again this will not be an easy game as they are doing very well given their newness to the League.

Ladies 2nd’s (5) vs. (0) Leeds 3rd’s
After waiting for an umpire because Leeds forgot to tell him to be there it was a slow cold start for Slazengers. The ladies soon warmed up and found the back board to start the scoring. Leeds had a few chances but with the usual solid defence nothing got through and Lisa GK Chappell has yet another clean sheet. Some good play team work and determination secured a 5-0 victory. Goals for Sue Hope, Natasha Wiper, Hannah Field, Stacey Drake and Alex Gilbert. A nice spread across the team. Player went to Heather Bates for her reasonably solid performance at the back and for her assistance in setting up goals. Well played team!!!

Ladies 4th’s (1) vs. (10) Dronfield 1st’s
Slazenger ladies 4th team played league leaders Dronfield and after they scored from their first attack it was clear it would be a difficult afternoon for the home team. The visitors scored another 5 goals in the first half. Slazenger came out fighting in the second half and played some good hockey, which was rewarded with a goal from Claire Dunstan. Player of the match Mandy Lacey played an excellent game in defence and supported the team well in the midfield. But the visitors were just simply to strong and the final score was 1 – 10.
