It was another frustrating game for Slazenger Ladies 4′s away at Rotherham on Saturday. After having a few rough weeks, they went in positive and were hopeful to get a good result.
Slazenger’s had a good start and soon had some good attacking opportunities with centre forward Jose Hughes making great runs and working well with the midfield. However, as the half went on Rotherham’s confidence grew and Slazenger’s defence was made to work hard, eventually Rotherham managed to score on 32 minutes. The defenders did extremely well but the second goal came very quickly afterwards. Unfortunately, Robyn Campbell, while defending, suffered a nasty injury to her little finger, and had to be taken to hospital. The first half ended 0-2.
The second half started as the first had finished with the Slaz defence under pressure and unable to get the ball out to the wings or forwards. Early pressure told for Rotherham and they opened the scoring after on 4 minutes and again 4 mins later. Slazengers rallied and a change of positions for Alice Gascoigne and Lauren Fealy in the midfield seemed to change the game and for 10 minutes Slaz enjoyed as much possession as Rotherham and moved the ball about with better effect.
Unfortunately with no subs and chasing the ball the slaz team started to tire early and Rotherham were able to gain the initiative. Rotherham were able to score a further 6 goals without reply. Even after conceding the goals the Slaz team kept on playing and defending and worked extremely hard. Robyn Campbell had played well in the first half and was missed having gone off injured, Helen Ward, Lauren M and Ingrid Coughtrey continued to work hard in defence. Alice Gascoigne having moved into centre mid challenged for every ball and earned man of the match for her determination. The game finished 0-10.
