Slazengers ladies seconds were all fired up after the festive break and arrived in Mirfield with high hopes of a win against Canalside Terriers who were sitting comfortably at 5th in the league. Slazengers pressed well from the off and were showing promise with several shots on target that were saved by the Terriers keeper. A lot of end to end play led to a clean sheet for both teams at half time.
The second half commenced and Slazengers were showing great promise down both sides of the pitch, a short corner was awarded to the away team which was converted by Daisy Gee-Sanders from a great reverse stick assist from Captain Nez Rollinson.
The green army were 1-0 up but the Terriers didn’t give in, they fought hard but shots on goal were cleared by the solid Slazengers defence and keeper – Lisa GK, Julie Finch, Karen Bates and Heather Bates.
Slazengers made a break down the right wing and the Terriers were slow to respond, excellent short passes between Stacey Binns, Alex Gilbert and Elle Poskett led to a cross in from Elle to Alex which was laid off to Daisy Gee-Sanders to go one on one with the Terriers keeper. Daisy powered the ball into the back of the goal and Slazengers were on form to claim their first win of 2013!
The Terriers were a little subdued but didn’t give up without a fight, they were awarded a short corner but with some superior cupping action from the green army defence the ball was kept out. Within the last 10 minutes Slazengers were awarded another short corner, Sue Hope pushed out to Daisy on the left slip but her goal was saved by the keeper’s pads. The rebound was followed up by Alex Gilbert who finished the play into the bottom right of the goal.
The full time whistle was blown and Slazengers were victorious – 3-0 with some excellent hockey from all the team.
