Firstly, Slazenger Hockey Club would like to take this opportunity to congratulate both Eleanor Townend and Amanda Sowerby for getting through to the next round of England over 50 trials and secondly would like to explain that due to the reorganisation of the North League, the ladies 1sts are now playing opponents for the second time this season which feels slightly wierd at this time of the year!
So, back to the match report for this week – having lost the away game only a few weeks previous and determined to get a result against local rivals Rotherham, Slaz met half an hour earlier to ensure that they understood their game plan and were well prepared. Unfortunately events did not go exactly to plan to begin with as Rotherham were the first to score. However, this goal was against the run of play so Slaz were not too disheartened and replied quickly with another well struck goal by Claire Mills to equal the score. However, this was short lived as once again Slaz allowed Rotherham to score on the break to leave the score at half time 1-2 to the opposition.
The half time team talk spurred Slaz into action and they put constant pressure on the Rotherham midfield and defence resulting in a penalty flick being awarded. Despite some mind games by the Rotherham keeper, Mandy Sowerby stepped up to calmly slot the ball home and level the scores once again. Slaz then knew they had to go for the winner as player of the match Katie Firth met a cross perfectly to deflect into the goal and give Slaz the lead. Despite some strong pressure from Rotherham, some great defending of short corners saw Slaz take the victory and a well deserved three points. Next Slaz game is the return match against Leeds Ladies at Weetwood where the aim will be to avenge a home defeat.
