Slazenger men’s 5th team had the better of the opposition for the first half of this encounter against Worksop.
Time and again Slazenger’s played some attractive, passing hockey, making excellent use of the wings with Ben Jackson linking up well with George Fealy and Alex King making good inroads down the left flank assisted by Elloit Goulding.
However, despite all this possession Slazenger could not capitalise and find the back of the net. Forward Peter Gunning was one of many, who had several chances to score but the Worksop keeper time and again came of his line to snuff out any danger.
At half time, the team discussed what needed to be done to find the back of the net but the opposition had other ideas and as some of the Slazenger players began to tire Worksop exerted more and more influence on the game. They were a physically bigger and stronger team and a couple of the skillful midfield players began to dominate the middle of the park and make Slazenger’s have to work much harder to retain quality possession.
Slazenger’s ultimately paid the price for not scoring when on top by switching off at a free hit and everyone watched the opposition simply pass the ball into the net unopposed. The home team didn’t deserve to lose but the game remained 1-0 to Worksop.
