Slazenger travelled to Rotherham expecting a hard game but seemed to make it hard for themselves in the first half. Although they didn’t allow Rotherham much space for them to settle into their formation, Slaz never really looked like they were going to score. Rotherham were the first to put the ball in the back of the net after being denied several times with some excellent defensive play. Goalkeeper Eleanor Townend again made some fine saves to keep Slaz in the game, however despite pressure from the midfield and forward line, Slaz were unable to convert their chances and the half time score remained 1-0 to the home team.
Rotherham came out to play the second half a stronger, more determined (and more physical) team, challenging hard for the ball and causing a couple of Slaz players to come off the worse for wear. Despite some good attacking play, unfortunately Slaz didn’t manage to get back into the game, allowing Rotherham to score a second time and make the points look out of reach for the away team.
Congratulations to player of the Match Zoe Smeaton for denying Rotherham the run of their strongest side, making some very timely tackles and releasing the ball well. Next week is home to Boston Spa – the question is will this be another physical game and should Slaz enlist the help of a Rugby Coach to help them harden up in preparation?
