Slazenger Starts the Season with Busy Club Weekend

September 22, 2011 by Slazenger HC

It was all go at Slazenger Hockey Club over the weekend, as the club prepared for the new season with a double bill of both tournament hockey and Junior Hockey.

NORTH CHALLENGER EVENT 2011

All of the teams were engaged in friendly away matches, with the exception of the Ladies 1st Team. Due to their winning of the Yorkshire premier League last season, they were hosting the Yorkshire North Challenge Cup; an invite only event for the best ladies teams in Yorkshire. It was a great exhibition of high level hockey for all to watch.

This event included teams from Leeds University, Leeds Adel Carnegie, Chapeltown, Wakefield, and Slazenger. Teams play mostly played in the division above, so Slazenger had a tough afternoon on their hands. Despite the torrential rain, they managed a commendable effort, tallying two draws and two close losses. In the end, it was Leeds Adel Carnegie; a resident of the North Division 1 (the league above) who deservedly lifted the cup.

The performance of Slazenger bodes well for the coming season. Having missed two key players, the squad still managed to play some fast hockey and give the more established teams a run for their money. The event proved a good warm up for all teams there and gave the Slazenger a great education, as they look to challenge in the North.

SLAZENGER CLUB DAY 2011

As part of the double bill weekend, Sunday saw the club host their first “Club Day” event. In conjunction with England Hockey, clubs across the country have been running events to promote the spot in the community. Free coaching was offered to anyone wanting to coming along. A busy first session was attended by almost 50 youngsters, many of whom were brand new to the sport. But that didn’t stop them getting stuck in and having a great time! This was followed up by another busy second session. While many of the older players were away at their first tournament of the season, there were still plenty of juniors to keep the coaches busy!
