As the match approached the half hour mark, it was Chapeltown who drew first blood. A defensive mistake conceded a short corner, allowing Chapeltown to slot the ball between the defenders at point blank range. Slazenger continued to apply the pressure, and went close several times. strikers Issac Fisher and James Bennett (man of the match) both had solid efforts, though to no avail.
The second half kicked off with a redoubling of Slazenger’s resolve, and within minutes the team had gone close again. A cross in from the centre midfield was picked up by striker Steve Johnson, who took it passed the keeper and then missed an open goal. However, he soon redeemed himself, slotting a scrappy equaliser over the linen. This was followed up quickly by a second from winger Ste Roberts, making short work of the defence, and defeating the keeper with a solid strike.
Unfortunately even with the continued pressure, Slazenger were unable to capitalise further. This led to a tough final 15 minutes as Chapeltown pressed for an equaliser. Strong work in the mid field from Alan Perry and Dave Smith played an instrumental part in breaking the attack, and several spectacular saves from debutant keeper Giles “Fodder” Fields secured the win for Slaz.
