Match Report

The Development Team kicked off their season in style with a strong home performance against Chapeltown. From the first whistle, Slazenger looked sharp, moving the ball with confidence and linking up brilliantly across the pitch. Adelaide, John, Izzy and Noah combined well in midfield to set up the forwards, and it wasn’t long before Ruth, Matthew and Jess were causing real problems in attack. Their hard work was rewarded when Matthew bagged the first goal of the season — a well-taken finish to put Slazenger 1–0 up.

At the back, the defensive trio of Tilda, Gemma and T-Dog were solid, calmly snuffing out any danger and leaving keeper Nikolai with little to do — so much so he could lean against the post and enjoy the view! Fresh legs came on with Charlie and Sarah slotting into midfield, and Darcie and Georgie joining the attack. Georgie quickly made her mark, finding perfect positioning to meet a cross and slot home Slazenger’s second. The team kept up their passing game, moving the ball smoothly across the pitch, and went into half time deservedly 2–0 ahead.

The second half carried on in much the same fashion. Nikolai was called into action a few times but dealt with everything comfortably. The juniors in the side showed great adaptability — Matthew and Matilda both dropping into midfield roles, and Noah slotting into defence when needed. Chances kept coming, and eventually Slazenger’s pressure told. After a Chapeltown foot on the line, the team were awarded a penalty flick, which Noah calmly converted to make it 3–0. A composed performance at both ends of the pitch also saw him voted Player of the Match.

A brilliant start to the season, with solid teamwork, good passing hockey, and a strong all-round effort. Thanks to Amelia and Zoe for umpiring. Another home game awaits next week — let’s take this momentum forward! Finally, a special mention for Adelaide — who had a super game in midfield, but still managed to earn herself Donut of the Day… for proudly running out in bright red socks while the rest of the team were in green!

Match Report

The Devs embarked on their first away adventure of the season, bravely travelling beyond the sacred borders of Yorkshire into the wilds of Lindum. Spirits were high, temperaments questionable, and the pizza prospects strong. From the first whistle, Slaz came out swinging — earning an early short corner which they could not convert. Then…glorious history was made! Cerys, in her first-ever league game, received a through ball from Izzy, calmly glided into the D like she’d been doing it for years, and slotted it home for 1–0. Cool. Composed. Clinical. Meanwhile, GK Ami spent most of the first half resting, thanks to Slaz holding 95% possession. At the back, Katie shut down Lindum’s attacks linking well with Izzy and Cerys down the right — a super trio! Four consecutive short corners followed without converting. Despite not feeling well herself, Georgie battled on and got herself into some great positions.

Half time: 1–0. Glorious team chat full of positivity!

The second half saw Adelaide and Amelia continue to boss centre midfield, while Matthew launched into some jab tackles so sharp they required a safety warning! Noah was unfazed by tackling fully grown adults. Lindum eventually clawed back an equaliser late in the second half, despite Slaz throwing bodies and sticks in defence. For the fourth week in a row, the prestigious Donut of the Day goes to…Adelaide! However — in an unprecedented twist — this week’s donut may need to be shared with her Dad, who served as Chief Chauffeur, Logistics Manager, and Human Sat Nav for the cross-border expedition.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH
A truly standout debut — Cerys claims Player of the Match! Goal scorer, cool-headed finisher, and future club legend in the making. Take a bow!

TEA RATING: 9/10
Pizza, chips, and birthday cake galore for Amelia & Matthew! If only goals were awarded for cakes!

Outstanding effort. Brilliant teamwork. Happy now we are all safely back in Yorkshire

Match Report

Well the Men’s 1st Team may have been at Scarborough today but I doubt they saw as much sand as greeted the Team on arrival at Sheffield today…I was expecting donkey rides at half time! But putting aside their temptation to get out the buckets & spades, the Team got stuck in. It was immediately obvious that Sheffield were going to be tough opponents (and no doubt more familiar to playing on a beach!) and so it proved with them scoring 4 in the first half despite some strong defence from Noah in particular and Nikolai’s usual 110% effort in goal.

I’m not entirely sure what the coaches said during the half time talk but it certainly worked because it was a revitalised Slaz team who took to the pitch for the 2nd 35 minutes! There were some tremendous runs forwards from Adelaide, Ruth & Izzy and several times we seemed on the brink of scoring but despite the best efforts of Georgina, Darcie & Ella, the ball refused to go over the line (not helped by a Sheffield goal keeper who may have driven to the match). Jess, Cerys and Charlie continued to recycle the ball & push hard from midfield but unfortunately it just wasn’t to be today and the score ended 5-0 (we shall gloss over Sheffields 5th goal as it was very much against the run of play)

Teas: chip butties and sausages….devoured with enough gusto to suggest that the kids hadn’t been fed all year!

Player of the Match: Noah for a tremendously solid game at right back…thoroughly well deserved

Donut: I think we were all hoping Adelaide would continue her early season form but instead it went to Ruth for her inexplicably collapsing legs.

Thank you to Keith, Mark & Gemma for being the playing adults and imparting hockey wisdom on their young colleagues. Plenty to learn from today but they should all be very proud of their work rate and coming out SO strongly in the 2nd half…..WELL DONE

Match Report

What a glorious day for hockey! The sun was shining, spirits were high, and the Slaz Devs put on a brilliant performance full of teamwork and determination. With two goalkeepers available, Nikolai stood strong between the posts while Frances kindly played for Doncaster — though she certainly didn’t make life easy for us! At the back, Harry, Katie, Captain Noah and Will were rock solid, with sharp tackles and clearances. The midfield worked tirelessly, with Adelaide, Izzy, Amelia, Harry, James and Alan spreading the play beautifully, supported by stints from Noah, Ruth and Matthew. Up front, Cerys, Jess and Georgie pushed hard, always looking for opportunities.

The kids showed no fear against their adult opposition, unfazed by the loud shouts as they fought for every ball. Their bravery was rewarded when Ruth struck early in the first half after some excellent build-up play. Chances kept coming — Matthew and Noah both had shots that tested the keeper — but Doncaster eventually equalised (with a little “help” from Uncle Will!). But Slaz wasn’t done. With just 10 seconds left on the clock, Captain Noah drove forward to win a short corner. The pressure mounted, a second corner followed, and Ruth calmly slotted home her second of the day to seal a dramatic 2-1 win!

Player of the Match: Ruth – tireless work rate and two well-deserved goals.

Donut of the Day: Uncle Will – for providing Doncaster with their best assist of the game!

A superb team effort in the sunshine – so much positivity, teamwork and resilience on show.

Match Report

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Rotherham – home of flat caps, steel, and a good old Yorkshire welcome!

It was a big night for young George H, making his debut in goal. First game for the Devs and he looked more confident than Brian Potter ordering a Bacardi Breezer. And he didn’t disappoint – cracking clearances, fearless saves, and plenty of “calm down” hand gestures when the defence got lively. Early doors, Adelaide slid a beauty through to Matthew. Keeper saved it, but Matthew – like a dog on chips – fought for it back and tucked it away on the reverse. One–nil! The crowd went wild (well, Noah’s mum definitely did).

The back line of Matilda, Katie Amelia and John were like Phoenix Club bouncers – nobody’s getting through without a membership card. In midfield, Alan, Adelaide, Izzy and Noah ran like they’d been powered by garlic bread – never stopped. When Jess came on, she covered more ground than a Peter Kay tour, playing the whole left… and right… and probably the car park if needed.

Up top, Ruth, Georgie, Cerys and Matthew gave the Rotherham defence nightmares, taking on their senior players with the confidence of Ray Von on the decks. Half time team talk? Inspirational. Captain Ruth rallied the troops, and George H gave his “view from the back” – mainly that Rotherham were piling the pressure on, but Slaz had the grit to hold firm.

Second half – chaos. Rotherham pressed, and pressed again. Short corner after short corner, and the Slaz wall held strong. George H made top–drawer saves. The defence threw themselves about like they were auditioning for Phoenix Nights’ “Stars in Their Eyes” special. Finally, Rotherham bundled one in to equalise. But not before Slaz showed grit, fight and a fair bit of comedy timing.

Player of the Match: A three-way tie: Katie for solid defending, Adelaide for creativity, and Jess for sheer hard graft.

Donut of the Day: John – because every good story needs a fall guy.

Final score: 1–1. Final verdict: Rotherham might have got the draw, but Slaz definitely got the garlic bread.

Match Report

Travelling to Sheffield, Slaz Devs turned up to face a much older Sheffield side. Slaz got off to a great start, maintaining possession and fighting for every ball, their hard work paid off when Noah fired a ball into the D which Matthew calmly slotted away for Slazengers to take the lead with only 11 minutes played.

Sheffield came back strong, winning themselves a few short corners (one leading to John questioning the umpire and being repaid with a 2 minute break on the sideline), but Nikolai (calm and collected as always) made sure these opportunities weren’t converted. However, Sheffield kept the pressure on and despite some outstanding clearances from Nikolai eventually managed to find the equaliser.

Going into the second half both teams were fired up. Matthew, Cerys and Ruth managed to create a lot of space upfront but weren’t able to capitalise on the long balls being sent up the pitch.

In midfield, Izzy, Jess, Alistair and Jude held their positions out wide, working tirelessly to win the ball and drive up the pitch.

In the middle Noah and John read the game too good for Sheffield\\\\\\\'s liking at times, intercepting passes and distributing the ball around the pitch, with Noah running at/around/through Sheffield\\\\\\\'s adults for fun.

Katie (propping up the oldies in defence) prevented a lot of goal scoring opportunities and worked the ball up the pitch amazingly, supported by Harry who went out confidently to meet the attack and slow down Sheffield\\\\\\\'s gameplay.

Unfortunately with 10 minutes to go, an overload in the Slaz defensive D meant Sheffield took the lead. Slazenger didn’t give up but were unable to bring the score back level.

The team played well beyond their years and are an absolute credit to Slaz.

Specials mentioned to Alistair and Jude for the Devs debuts. Slaz’s future is looking very bright (green).

Player of the tournament went to Noah for a solid performance across the pitch.

Donut went to John for his green card after taking a tomahawk to his bum!

Match Report

On a very wet and challenging morning in Wakefield, the Devs team started with real intensity. Noah drove play forward early, winning a short corner, and Ruth came close twice before finally scoring on the third attempt — 1–0 Slaz. The defence remained rock-solid, keeping Wakefield at bay until just before halftime when Wakefield snuck an equaliser.

In the second half, Slaz continued to dominate possession and pressure, with strong defensive work from Katie, Ollie, and Harry. Matthew came close to scoring, but Wakefield’s experienced players capitalised on their chances to take the lead and extend it to 3–1. Despite the final score, Slaz’s youngsters delivered a performance full of determination, skill, and attacking intent.

Match Report

The Slazenger Development team were ready for action… the weather, less so. Sideways rain, diagonal rain, possibly even upwards rain — we had it all. Rotherham were delayed on the M1 thanks to a nasty accident, so the start time was pushed back. Slaz used this bonus time wisely: to try out for synchronised soaking!

But once things finally kicked off, Nikolai had such a quiet first half he achieved a level of calm usually reserved for yoga retreats, all thanks to the unstoppable defensive partnership of Tony the Wise and Ella the Tiny-but-Fearless. Together they turned the Slaz defensive 25 into a “No Entry” zone. Katie and Ollie guarded the flanks like absolute pros, sliding in with tackles that said: “Not today, thanks.”
In midfield, the iconic mum–son duo Gemma and Noah linked up beautifully, assisted by wing wizards Izzy and Amelia. Noah topped it off with some lovely goals — proving that family chemistry does, indeed, show up on the scoresheet.

Up front, Ruth and Cerys worked their socks off, with Ruth sticking away a tidy goal of her own. While Rotherham were still waiting on players, Jude and Alistair jumped in to help them out, wearing blue temporarily and showing great sportsmanship. They gave the Slaz team a proper challenge and kept the game competitive and fun. Once the rest of the Rotherham players arrived, they switched back to Slaz green and immediately made things lively — Alistair flying down the right wing, Jude slotting into defence and putting in some beautifully timed tackles. Second-half Nikolai returned to his usual dramatic style, making key saves and keeping a well-earned clean sheet.

Player of the Match: Ella, for playing with such maturity, she commanded the defence like a tiny general directing troops — only with better footwork and significantly less shouting. With no Adelaide to take her weekly accolade…

Donut of the Day: Amelia, for continuing her unofficial tour of South Yorkshire hockey teams, and deciding Val’s teas were so good she needed *two teas*.  Frankly… understandable.

Special Mention: Alys, who bravely took on her first ever umpiring duty in conditions that could only be described as “biblical.” She swapped her stick for a whistle - well done, kiddo!

Match Report

With tinsel in our hair and just enough players to fill Santa’s sleigh, we arrived at Chapeltown with only 11 festive warriors — but what an eleven they were! Despite being out-sized by the opposition (think elves versus giants), our team started like they’d been fuelled by pure Christmas magic. Settling quicker than snow on Christmas Eve, the team earned an early short corner. Noah, cool as a Christmas cucumber, slipped the ball to Matthew who tucked it past the keeper with the elegance of sliding a present under the tree — 1-0 to us!

The midfield of John, Noah, Amelia and Izzy played like Santa’s finest toy-makers, producing chance after chance. Out wide, Cerys and Jess kept their width like garlands stretching across a mantelpiece, feeding Matthew up top in his high CF role. Chapeltown came knocking, earning three short corners, but Super Ninja Nikolai — clearly on loan from the North Pole — produced three spectacular saves, keeping our clean sheet sparkling.

At the back, our festive fortress of T-Dog, Katie and Georgie made crucial stops, blocking Chapeltown from entering the D as firmly as a bouncer guards Santa’s workshop. Chapeltown emerged after halftime full of fire, testing our defence with some excellent play. But Nikolai, surely fuelled by mince pies and magic dust, refused to let anything past him — finishing the game with a well-earned clean sheet. Georgie, Katie and T-Dog held strong, with John helping clear danger out wide. Izzy and Amelia ran tirelessly through the midfield snow, Noah popping up everywhere to make crunching tackles like the Nutcracker himself.

Jess worked brilliantly down the left, teaming with Amelia, who both put in an incredible shift despite not feeling 100% — the spirit of Christmas carried them through! Matthew created chances with clever movement, repeatedly challenging a goalkeeper twice his size. Another short corner brought more festive cheer. Matthew rounded the GK, only for a Chapeltown foot to stop the shot on the line. Penalty flick! Noah stepped up, stared down a keeper double his size, and coolly slotted home — 2-0! Down the right, Izzy and Cerys paired up beautifully, like Rudolph and Dasher leading an attack straight toward goal.

With no subs on a frosty December day, every player showed true heart, grit, and festive spirit right until the very end. Huge thanks to Chapeltown for a well-spirited match — a lovely fixture all round.

Teas: 9/10
Chip butties the size of stockings and a warm, welcoming clubhouse atmosphere — Santa approves.

Player of the Match:
Votes for Nikolai and Katie, but the star on top of today’s tree is Georgie! Only her second time in defence, and she absolutely owned it - showing that the second Firth in the family might just turn out to be the better defender!

Donut of the Day: Amelia… again! That’s four in a row — she’s officially on a roll (pun absolutely intended).

Well played everyone — a true Christmas miracle of teamwork, spirit and heart!

Match Report

A tough match against Wakefield, despite the challenge, our players showed fantastic determination, teamwork and spirit throughout. The final score was 2–0 to Wakefield, but the team held their heads high and should be proud of their performance. In goal, Nikolai made some excellent saves and really kept us in the game, facing some very powerful shots from the older opposition.

At the back, Harry showed a calm head in defence with some great tackles, while Georgie timed tackles superbly and made some great passes up the pitch. Katie was a key player in defence all game and fully deserved her Player of the Match award.

Ollie moved into midfield and worked hard, helping link play across the pitch. Noah, despite being one of the youngest players, put in a fantastic shift and linked up really well with Addy, who was strong throughout – supporting the defence and pushing forward when needed. Out wide, Alistair led by example as Captain, working tirelessly on the wing. Further forward, Jess covered so much ground and worked incredibly hard both in attack and defence. Cerys also worked hard and kept pushing for the team. Ella, our tiniest player, showed great determination and battled hard throughout the game.

A big thank you to both Gemmas for supporting the kids, Amelia for managing the team today, and Nicci for stepping in to umpire at the last minute.

And finally… the Donut of the Day goes to Gemma S, who might need a quick refresher on counting to four! During a short corner we already had four players back defending, but she still called for another one to come back – a funny moment that gave everyone a laugh!

Great effort from the whole team today – lots to be proud of.

Devs Match Report: Rotherham vs Slazengers – Final Game of the Season

The final match of the season delivered absolutely everything: goals, injuries, near misses, and a huge emotional milestone as Adelaide, Ruth, and Issy stepped onto the pitch for their last junior game before moving up to senior hockey. Cerys was deservedly named Player of the Match for the final Devs game of the year, capping off an excellent performance.

First Half

Slazengers came out firing. Within the first 30 seconds, Georgie took a blow to the head but shook it off with real grit. The early pressure paid off almost immediately: in the 2nd minute, Addy threaded a clever assist to Alastair, who buried the ball into the back corner for a brilliant opener.

At 8 minutes, Cerys carved through the midfield and slipped the ball into Ruth and Noah, but despite the promising build-up, the chance just wouldn’t convert. Slaz dominated possession, keeping Rotherham pinned back for long spells.

But Rotherham are nothing if not opportunistic. A sudden break forced Katie and Georgie into defensive action. A short corner at 14 minutes led to a nasty knock for Katie, who had to leave the pitch. The rest of the half became a frantic, end-to-end battle with both sides desperate to score. Katie returned at the 30-minute mark, giving the team a much-needed boost heading into halftime.

Second Half

Rotherham struck early, equalising within the first five minutes. Moments later, they earned another short corner but couldn’t convert. Their momentum continued, though, and a strong run saw them take a 2–1 lead.

The game descended into full-on carnage: Noah took a painful hit to the foot, and a Rotherham player had to be carried off with a knee injury. Slazengers kept pushing, dribbling the ball right across the goal line at one point, agonisingly refusing to go in.

A short corner for Slaz offered hope, but again the finish just wasn’t there. Then Issy unleashed a powerful strike from just outside the D — on target, but without a touch inside the circle, it couldn’t count.

Rotherham threatened again, but Nikolai produced a calm, confident save to keep Slaz in it.

Final Minutes

The last five minutes were played almost entirely in Rotherham’s D, with every Slaz player pushing forward in search of the equaliser. But a late Rotherham break forced the defence to scramble. Nikolai made two superb saves, but on the third attempt — with just 30 seconds left — Rotherham found the net, sealing a 3–1 finish.

Final Thoughts

Despite the scoreline, it was a thrilling, hard-fought match full of heart, determination, and moments of real quality. A fantastic game to watch — and a memorable send-off for Adelaide, Ruth, and Issy as they step up to senior hockey.
