Match Report

Slazenger travelled away for their first game of the season to the traditionally frigid pitch of Halifax. However it was the opposition who looked frozen in place as the new look team opened up their account with a 3 goal lead before half time. Goals from captain Damian Greig (2) and retuning veteran Tim Carr gave the side a commanding lead.

However, Halifax are rarely beaten so easily, and emerged in the second half with a renewed vigour, shutting Slaz down and creating their own trouble. Slaz conceded two in the second half, but held firm to take the first 3 points of their league campaign.

The 3rds hosted visiting team Hull 4ths for a tough and soggy encounter at Southfield Lane. Slazenger scored 2 from Captain Damian Greig, and veteran goal machine Tim Carr. However, Hull were more fluid and angle to capitalise on the possession that they enjoyed. Slaz look to get back to winning ways next week when they travel to City of York 5th's.

Match Report

Slazenger men’s 3’s travelled to York hoping to improve on last weeks result against Hull.

The visitors started well playing the ball confidently around at the back and then using the pace of Seth Hoole and Jack Sanderson out wide to put them in opposition territory. A break against the run of play saw York take the lead, however the Addingford side kept playing with Dan Bailey, who had found his stick and Adrian Buckley winning vital possession and setting the Slaz attacking press. After 20 minutes a well worked short corner routine saw Tim Carr fire the ball high into the York net. The two sides went in on equal terms at half time. The second half was much like the first both teams trading attacks which kept Daz Buttery busy as he pulled off some astounding saves. However, 10 minutes into the half the home side again took the lead as a loose ball was eventually put away.

Undeterred Will Carr and Owen Wiper linked up well as the half progress and the energy and running of Ali Smith put the York defence under pressure. A series of short corners finally paid off as Harry Ashford fired the ball home to level the scores once again. In an evenly matched game it was York who took the lead with 10 minutes to go as a hopeful ball across the D took a deflection off a Slaz stick and into the backboard.

The team in green pushed for a late equaliser but just couldn’t create that clear opportunity. The 3’s are aiming to avenge this 3-2 defeat when they play Leeds Adel at home next Saturday.

Match Report

On a wet, cold and windy Saturday morning Slazenger mens 3’s were at home to Leeds Adel. It seemed as though the early start had caught the hosts out and they were still waking up as the visitors were 3-0 after 10 minutes.
The Addingford outfit weren’t dampened by this and slowly began to get a hold of the game, Jack Sanderson, Ally Smith and Seth Hoole linking up well and putting pressure on the Leeds midfield. Eventually the pressure the home side paid off when a penalty fick was awarded and putting pressure away by captain Damien Grieg. The rain continued to bounce down as Slazenger’s went in 3-1 down at half time.

The second half was a completely different one to the first Simon Taylor and Will Carr setting attack after attack up with some great passes out from defence. On the hour mark Slaz’ dominance paid off as Josh Swallow scored to make the score 2-3. The team continued to play some exceptional hockey and dominated Leeds however a defensive mistake allowed the Leeds forward to punish the hosts and put them 4-2 up. Slazenger, like the weather were relentless as they continued to play an attractive brand of hockey and with 3 minutes to go saw Greig score again to make bring the hosts within one.

However, the Horbury side couldn’t find a deserved equaliser and slipped to a 4-3 defeat. There were many positives to take from the game and the green machine will look to start spritely next week when they have another 10am start against Leeds.

Match Report

What a difference a week makes from the cold, wind and rain of the previous week to beautiful autumnal sunshine this week. Just like the weather has turned around, Slazenger men’s 3’s hoped their fortunes on the pitch would do the same against an experienced Leeds outfit, who in their gleaming white shirts were intent on not allowing that to happen. The game was scheduled to be an away fixture but due to issues with the oppositions pitch this game would be played on the hallowed Horbury turf. Slazenger began very strongly and were camped in the Leeds half of the pitch for the opening 20 minutes. It was the tenacity of Jack Sanderson and Dan Bailey in the midfield who didn’t let their opponents have a second on the ball. That added with the endless running of Tim Carr and Owen Wiper meant the Leeds defence were constantly unsettled and unable to break through a strong Slazenger press. The team in green took the lead after 25 minutes when a well worked move down the right wing and a deceptively placed ball by Ryan Bishop allowed a flying Scott Carruthers to dive in and send the ball soaring into the Leeds net. In the moments that followed neat play by Aidy Buckley and Matt Warwick-Giles almost carved out another chance.

Slazenger then had a period of time in which they had a series of short corners, one of which saw Trevor Armitage come close to converting. Concern was etched all over the faces of those on the terraces as Slazenger stalwart and defensive rock Mark Swallow had to leave the field through injury. The green army had to readjust at the back and as the first half was entering its final moments Leeds managed to find a way through the Slazenger defence. A miss-hit shot bobbled and its way past goalkeeper Daz Buttery into the Slaz’ net. 1 a piece going into the break.

The second half began in the same manner as the first with the Addingford outfit dominating play in the middle of the pitch. Simon Taylor driving forward at every given opportunity and creating havoc with the Leeds players who were unable to tackle him cleanly. It was only a matter of time before the Leeds players started to let their frustration boil over as they received a series of green and then yellow cards due to their inability to tackle the “Horbury locomotive” Taylor as he choo-chooed down the line. On the other side of the field it was Seth Hoole and his spins which were sending the Leeds side dizzy. However, for all their possession Slazengers could not create a clear chance and although they had a series of short corners were unable to convert. It was no surprise that Leeds started to have more possession and play in the Slaz half and James Taylor who was a bystander for long periods of the game was called upon to make some trademark tackles and blocks to frustrate the team in white. It was man of the match Buttery in goal that produced a phonominal save in the final minutes, as he managed to dive down and stop a shot that was fired ferociously towards the bottom corner and deflect it around the corner. This moment of heroism from Buttery drove the Horbury side forwards for one final attack allowing them to win a short corner. Captain Damian Grieg barked out the instructions, he was going to slip it to Carr for a one-two back to him. However as the ball was injected in the Leeds runners spilt which allowed Greig to have his moment in the Saturday morning Sun, a drag flick into the net leaving the Leeds goalkeeper and their defence in a state of bewilderment.

Leeds rushed to push back no sooner did they do so, the umpire raised the whistle to his lips ending the game. The Slazenger supporters went wild as they cheered their heroes from the field. 2-1 winners and feeling like they could beat anyone, let’s hope they can as they face Ben Rhydding next week in what could be a tough game.

Match Report

Slazenger’s arrived at Leeds Uni to discover that the weather had decided to recreate the Great Flood, presumably in an attempt to wash away any hopes of a competitive hockey match. Torrential rain hammered down, the pitch resembled a paddling pool, and the ball moved with all the predictability of a toddler on roller skates.

Leeds Uni, apparently part-duck, adapted immediately. Within five minutes, Slazenger’s were 2–0 down and questioning whether turning up had actually been the right life choice. The home side slipped, slid, and somehow scored twice while Slazenger’s were still figuring out which end of the pitch they were supposed to be defending.

But then—hope!

A short corner. A moment of calm in the storm (well, as calm as anything can be when water is falling horizontally). The Slazenger’s captain Damo Greig stepped up and absolutely leathered the ball into the net, making it 2–1 and temporarily convincing everyone that a comeback was possible.

This illusion lasted approximately six minutes, despite the efforts in midfield of Jack Sanderson, Aidy Buckley and Dan Sprayley. Leeds Uni nabbed a third before halftime, sending Slazenger’s into the break trailing 3–1, soaked, shivering, and silently drafting complaint letters to the Met Office.

The second half… well… happened. Slaz tried to go forwards with Will Carr, Seth Hoole and Scott Carruthers out wide. Yes despite some great blocks by Harry Firth and Sammy in goal Leeds scored four more goals. Each one greeted by Slazenger’s with the same enthusiasm usually reserved for surprise dentist appointments. The game ended 7–1, though the players may have been too waterlogged to see the scoreboard clearly.

In summary:
Leeds Uni were good.
Slazenger’s were soggy.
The weather was malicious.

Match Report

Slazenger welcomed Halifax for a pre-Christmas clash that promised hockey, heroics, and at least questionable festive jokes. From the whistle, however, it was the visitors unwrapping all the early presents. Within 20 minutes Halifax had bundled in two goals—both arriving with the subtlety of an excited child at 5 a.m. on Christmas morning.

Slazenger nearly responded when striker Tim Carr found himself one-on-one with the keeper, only to send his effort high and wide —rumour has it the ball is currently orbiting the North Pole. Moments later, winger Will Carr thought he’d grabbed a goal, but the umpire channelled his inner Scrooge and disallowed it, for a Slaz foot in the D.

Captain Damian Greig then added a splash of festive drama. After being steamrolled by a particularly shiny-headed Halifax defender—so bald he could have doubled as a Christmas bauble—Greig’s retaliatory bah humbug earned him a green card and two minutes in the Naughty Corner. Halifax took full advantage, adding a third before the break to make it 3–0 at halftime.

Whatever was in Slazenger’s halftime mince pies, it worked. The home side emerged like a team possessed—faster, fiercer, and finally playing hockey instead of gift-giving. Owen Wiper dazzled with footwork so slick it could have been on ice; Dan Bailey and Jack Sanderson bossed the midfield like over-caffeinated elves; and Aidy Buckley and Seth Hoole sprayed passes around with festive generosity (the good kind).

The pressure built, and eventually Simon Taylor delivered the moment the crowd wanted—smashing a glorious shot into the net with enough power to light up the Christmas tree. At 3–1, the comeback was on.

Slazenger pushed, pressed, and threw everything forward short of an inflatable Santa, but Halifax held firm. Despite the late surge, the match finished Slazenger 1–3 Halifax.

Now, with stockings ready and sticks soon to rest, Slazenger look forward to the Christmas break—promising to return in the New Year refreshed, recharged, and hopefully facing fewer bald battering rams. Merry Christmas!

Match Report

Under the wide Yorkshire skies of Addingford, Horbury, the dusty frontier town played host to a high-noon showdown: Slazenger vs Leeds, sticks holstered and gum shields clenched.

Unfortunately for the home side, Leeds rode into town like a gang of well-fed outlaws and started shooting before Slazenger had finished tying their spurs. Inside the first 10 minutes, Leeds had slapped three goals on the board, quicker than you can say “This town ain’t big enough for both of us.” The Slazenger defence looked like saloon doors in a strong wind.

Sensing the shootout was getting ugly, Slazenger captain Scott Carruthers tipped his hat, squinted into the sun, and boldly changed the formation, rearranging his posse in the hope of restoring some law and order. To be fair, there were flashes of promise before the break. Will Carr and Seth Hoole charged down the wings like stagecoach drivers late for payday, putting in some excellent running and causing Leeds a few nervous glances over their shoulders.

Still, when the half-time whistle blew, Slazenger trudged off 3–0 down, boots heavy, pride slightly dented, but spirits not entirely shot.

The second half plan was simple and very Western:
1. Try to score.
2. Try to stop Leeds from scoring any more.

Dan Bailey and Simon Taylor rolled up their sleeves and went to work, battling in midfield like ranch hands fencing off hostile territory. Behind them, goalkeeper Sammy turned into the sheriff of Addingford, throwing himself in front of shots and making some truly fantastic saves, the kind that had the crowd reaching for their imaginary six-shooters in approval.

But as the minutes dragged on, the desert took its toll. Slazenger picked up injuries, bodies hit the dust, and then came the moment that’ll be retold in the saloon for years: striker Tim Carr, seeing red like a cowboy who’d had one whiskey too many, flew into a tackle on a Leeds midfielder and was promptly sin-binned, sent off to cool his heels and reflect on his life choices.

Outnumbered, outgunned, and running on grit alone, Slazenger kept fighting — but Leeds were ruthless, piling on the goals like bounties on a wanted poster. When the final whistle echoed across the plains, the scoreboard read a stark 8–0 to Leeds.

It wasn’t Slazenger’s day in the Wild West. But they stayed in the fight, showed heart, and lived to ride again — because in hockey, like the frontier, tomorrow’s another town and revenge is always just one match away.

Match Report

Hear ye, hear ye—let it be writ upon this humble scroll the tale of sticks and valour, struck at the hour of half past four after noon, when Slazenger 3s did clash with Ben Rhydding 5s.

In the waning light of the day as rain did fall, when shadows grew long and spirits were tested, the men of Slazenger 3s took to the field. Guarding the sacred goal stood Sammy, steadfast as a keep upon a hill. Before him formed the shield wall: Harry, Simon, Dodge, and Harry C, iron-hearted and sworn to defend. In the middle ground laboured Jez, Dan, and Aidy, movers of play and breakers of lines. Along the flanks flew Will, Seth, and Ryan, swift as messengers on the king’s road. Ahead, hungry for glory, waited Tim, Trevor, and Owen, ever seeking the breach.

Yet alas! Early fortune favoured not Slazenger. By cruel twist and wayward bounce, Ben Rhydding did strike four times, and the score lay heavy at 4–0 upon the half, like a storm upon a battered banner. Many a lesser band would have folded their standards then. But not these men.

From a short corner, young Ryan did step forth, and with craft and courage sent the ball true—the first reply, a spark in the darkness.
Very soon after, Dan, drawing back his stick as a bowman of old, loosed a shot like an arrow, piercing the corner of the goal—clean, deadly, and full of promise. Hope grew loud upon the touchline. Then came the moment of cruel fate: Dodge, brave of heart, stood for a penalty flick, yet fortune turned her face away, and the chance went begging. Still the charge did not falter.

Once more Ryan was summoned, this time to the penalty spot, and with the calm of a seasoned knight he struck true, claiming the third goal and setting hearts racing. The field trembled with belief; the comeback loomed like legend half-written. Though time proved the sternest foe, and no fourth goal would come, the final reckoning stood at 4–3—a narrow loss, yet rich in honour.

Above all stood Sammy, whose glove and grit kept Slazenger alive when the tide was fiercest. By common voice and rightful acclaim, he was named Man of the Match, protector of the realm. So ends this tale: not of defeat, but of resolve. Let it be remembered that though Slazenger 3s fell by one, they rose from four, and left the field with heads unbowed and spirits unbroken.

Thus is it written.

Match Report

Batten down the hatches and gather round, ye faithful followers of the good ship Slazenger, for this be the tale of a fierce encounter with the seaborne raiders from Kingston upon Hull. Though the final ledger shows an 8–2 raid in favour of the visitors, the battle was far from the one-sided plunder the score may suggest. On home turf, the Slazenger crew took to the field with cutlasses sharpened and cannons primed. Guarding the treasure chest stood Sammy, nimble and sharp-eyed between the posts.

Before him, the defensive galleon of Simon, Dodge, Harry, and Josh formed a stout hull, repelling early Hull raids with brave blocks and fearless tackles. Each clearance was thumped upfield like a cannonball fired across the bow. In the engine room, Dan, Aidy, and Jack toiled like seasoned deckhands, winning possession and spreading play wide to the fleet-footed wingers Will, Seth, and Ryan, who marauded down the flanks with salt in their veins.

Up top, Tim, Trevor, and Scott pressed high and hunted in packs. And it was the ruthless buccaneer Trevor who twice struck gold. First, he pounced upon a loose ball in the circle and buried it with pirate precision. Then, after slick build-up play, he doubled his bounty with a clinical finish past the Hull keeper. At 3–2 by halftime, it was a contest balanced on a knife’s edge. Blow for blow. Cannon for cannon. Not an inch of deck given lightly.

Alas, as many a sailor knows, the sea can change without warning. Hull returned from the break with the wind in their sails and began to press with relentless waves of attack. Despite the backline’s brave resistance and tireless tracking from the midfield, the visitors found gaps and exploited them with ruthless efficiency. Yet through the storm stood one man unwavering. Sammy.

Time and again he flung himself full stretch, parrying shots, blocking one-on-ones, and smothering rebounds. Without his heroics, the scoreline may have told an even darker tale. His saves were not mere stops — they were acts of defiance against the rising tide. Despite Slazenger’s continued fight and Trevor’s earlier plunder, Hull’s finishing proved decisive as they extended their lead before the final whistle signalled the end of battle.

Sammy claims the captain’s hat this week. A wall, a warrior, a one-man breakwater against the storm. Eight may have passed him, but twice as many were denied by courage and cat-like reflexes. Though the result stings like salt in a fresh wound, the first half showed Slazenger 3s can trade fire with any crew in the waters. With steadier sails and sharper focus after the break, future voyages shall surely yield richer treasure.
Until the next battle, keep yer sticks ready and yer spirits high.

Match Report

The men’s 3s launched their campaign into orbit with an intergalactic 8–5 victory over Selby 1s — their first points of 2026 and a match that had more twists than a trip through an asteroid field.

From the first whistle, Slazenger looked ready for lift-off. With Sammy guarding the goal like a planetary shield and a defensive ring of Dodge, Simon, Josh, Harry, and Mark forming the outer atmosphere, the side quickly established control of the galaxy.

The early exploration paid off when Seth, Slazenger’s star striker, fired the first rocket past the Selby keeper. It wouldn’t be his last mission success. Slazenger continued their cosmic assault, with Dodge launching a thunderbolt from defence and John navigating through traffic to add another. By the time the halftime siren echoed through the vacuum, Slazenger held a commanding 4–2 lead.

The midfield engine room of Jack, Aidy, Jez, and Dan kept the spaceship humming, while Scott and Seth streaked down the wings like comets, stretching Selby’s defence across the solar system.

Early in the second half, Slazenger extended their lead to 5–2 thanks to Jack, and the chance came for Dodge to hammer home a penalty flick and push the visitors further into deep space. Unfortunately, the shot drifted just wide of the target — a second misfire from the Slazenger launchpad for the defender in recent weeks.

Selby seized the moment and mounted a counterattack worthy of a sci-fi thriller. Despite Slazenger reaching 6–3, the visitors surged back through the cosmic chaos, clawing their way to 6–5 and threatening to pull Slazenger into a black hole of nerves.

But when the stars mattered most, John stepped forward like a true space commander. The Slazenger talisman completed a stunning four-goal haul, restoring order to the universe and sealing the match, while Dodge redeemed himself with a second goal from a short corner.

Two late Slazenger rockets put the game beyond Selby’s gravitational pull, confirming a thrilling 8–5 victory. Man of the Match: John — four goals and a performance that shone brighter than a supernova.

After a rollercoaster journey through the hockey cosmos, Slazenger 3s finally planted their flag on their first win of 2026 — and if this match is anything to go by, their season might just be heading for the stars.

Match Report

The sun hung low over Slazenger like a dusty frontier town waiting for trouble. The wind rolled across the pitch like a tumbleweed, and the Slazenger 3s stood ready on the wooden porch… sticks in hand, eyes narrowed toward the visitors riding in from Harrogate.

Sheriff Sammy took his place between the posts, calm as a gunslinger who’d seen every trick in the book. In front of him stood the town’s defensive line: Simon, Trevor, Josh, and Dodge — four hard men guarding the border like a line of iron-clad deputies.

In the midfield saloon roamed Jez, Jack, and Aidy, stirring the dust and looking to deal trouble to anyone who crossed their path. Out on the wide prairie, Will, Scott, and Seth patrolled the wings, ready to ride down the flanks. And leading the charge up front were the outlaws Tim and Ryan, waiting for their moment to draw.

It didn’t take long.

Five minutes in, the sound of the first shot rang out across the valley. A slick move up the field saw the ball roll kindly to Ryan, who stepped forward like a man drawing from the holster. Crack. The strike flew past the Harrogate keeper and into the back of the net.

1–0 Slazenger.

The home crowd roared like a frontier bar on payday. Slazenger had struck first.

But Harrogate weren’t the sort to ride quietly out of town.

They regrouped, circled back, and began pressing harder. The Slaz defence held firm for long spells — Simon, Trevor, Josh, and Dodge throwing themselves into tackles like men diving behind cover in a shootout. Behind them, Sammy stood tall in goal, pulling off save after save, batting shots away with the cool nerve of a veteran gunman.

Still, the visitors eventually found their opening and levelled the score before the break.

The second half turned into a dusty duel. Midfield battles raged, with Jez, Jack, and Aidy scrapping for every inch of territory while the wingers kept galloping down the flanks looking for another opening.

But Harrogate’s guns kept firing. Two more strikes found their mark despite heroic resistance from the Slaz back line and more acrobatic stops from Sammy.

When the final whistle blew, the scoreboard read:

Slazenger 3s 1 – 3 Harrogate 4s

Defeat on the day, but not without grit, dust, and a fair few heroic stands.

And when the dust settled, there was no doubt about the day’s top gunslinger. With a string of outstanding saves that kept Slazenger in the fight far longer than the scoreline suggests, Man of the Match rode off into the sunset: Seth.

The result may not have gone Slazenger’s way, but the town will ride again next week.

Match Report

The final match of the season at Slazenger began not as a game, but as a mystery waiting to unfold. Under sunny Yorkshire skies, two sides gathered at the scene: Slazenger 3s and the visiting University of Leeds 2s. By the end of the afternoon, the evidence would point to a decisive outcome — but the investigation would not be without brave resistance from the home side.

Detective Sammy took up his post between the posts, the last line of defence and guardian of the crime scene. Ahead of him formed the defensive cordon: Jez, Harry, Josh, and Dodge, tasked with shutting down any suspicious activity before it reached the circle.

In midfield, investigators Dan, Jack, and Aidy searched tirelessly for clues, linking play and probing for weaknesses in the Leeds operation. On the wings lurked Will, Scott, Ryan, and Seth, moving swiftly down the flanks like undercover agents tracking their suspects.

Leading the line were Tim, John, and Trevor, the attacking trio looking to crack the case at the other end.

But from the opening whistle, Leeds arrived with a carefully plotted scheme. Before Slazenger could fully piece together the clues, the visitors had struck repeatedly, leaving the scoreboard reading 4–1 to Leeds at half time.

The Slaz defence battled to contain the onslaught. Jez, Harry, Josh, and Dodge made crucial interceptions, throwing themselves into tackles as if sealing off crime scenes. Behind them, Sammy was everywhere — diving, blocking, and denying what looked like certain goals. Time and again he thwarted Leeds’ advances, keeping the investigation alive.

The second half continued the drama. Slazenger searched for answers, pushing forward through midfield as Dan, Jack, and Aidy tried to unlock Leeds’ defence. The wide players stretched the field, and the forwards worked tirelessly to create opportunities.

But Leeds’ plot proved difficult to unravel. The visitors added further goals as the minutes ticked by, despite more outstanding work from Sammy, whose reflex saves prevented the scoreline from becoming even more dramatic.

When the final whistle closed the case file, the verdict read: Slazenger 3s 2 – 7 University of Leeds 2s

A tough result to end the season, but not without heroics.

Amid the chaos and clues scattered across the pitch, one man stood out as the tireless investigator of the afternoon. With save after save and composure under relentless pressure, Man of the Match was unquestionably Sammy, whose performance in goal kept Slazenger fighting until the very end.

The season may have closed with defeat, but the case of the Slazenger 3s will reopen next year — and the detectives will be ready
